Start your day early. Leave early from Barcelona and take the train. We went to Placa Catalunya and bought our TOT Montserrat ticket (which is available with or without lunch and the transportation transfers from and to Barcelona). The views on the way up there was unforgettable. We took the Cremallera (train instead of cable car). We visited the Black Virgin Mary first which was a long line, about 1.5 hours. The cafeteria food was ok. Then we took the Funicular of Saint Joan going to the mountains above the monastery and took a scenic hike all the way to the top and walked back to the funicular that would take us back to the monastery. however, we missed the last trip. I believe the last one is at 5:30 pm. We walked all the way down which took us about 1.5 hrs. Make sure you know when the last funicular schedule. They would not make a special trip just for you.

Bus tour through Expedia- directions to pickup good. Young lady at bus line very helpful. Bus 45-60 min each way. Tour guide helpful on way with history of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Moderate amount of walking, up about 50 stairs to Monastery. Big draw being the Black Virgin--about 1 hr wait in line our afternoon, a bit of a letdown when you get to her. View from the 2400' mountain awesome. Monks control everything on the mountain, food, purchasing of crafts, liquors, etc. Nice tour to take to say that you've been there.

The impressive Benedictine monastery was a must see for us. We visited the royal Basilica, one of Spain's most important pilgrimage sites, and admired the 12th century Romanesque carving of the Virgin Morenita, Black Virgin. Allow plenty of time to wait in the long line to see her. The restaurant outside was delicious and clean. Shopping in the stalls outside made for treats to bring home.

We spended one day in Montserrat, Catalunyia. Breathtaking scenery, beautiful basilica. The longest waitingline is to the crypt of black madonna. If You are not on Your pilgrimage, then think if the two to three hours waiting-time is worth it. The place and atmosphere are exceptional to say
the least. We took cremallaria traininstead of cable car, the views from the train are also something to remember a lifetime.

Gorgeous. You need to go. Instead of taking the tram up we hiked. It was gorgeous. Depending on your speed and ability it can take you anywhere between 50-135min. I don't recommend for elderly or very young persons who aren't regularly very active.
The basilica is breathtaking. Regardless of faith you can attend mass. PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS A CHURCH. People can become very loud, and had to be shushed by a priest a few times.
BE AWARE that the line to the crypt/La Moreneta is about 1.5-2 hours long. You will have about 30 seconds to see it. Worth the wait if you're religious and it holds meaning to you. Please don't bring wrestles and loud children, the line is 2 hours and it's a church. There were many times a few children and their parents were sushed.
Overall, stunning!!!
