“The entire mountain is a church”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

What a beautiful place this is. When you get to the monastery, you will find a long line, this is the line to touch the Virgin of Montserrat, the Black Madonna, so if this is not of importance to you, just find the front door and walk right in. While the monastery is quite beautiful, it pales in comparison to the natural beauty of the mountain and naturally, is very crowded. Allow time to take the funicular de Saint Joan from the monastery to the top, then hike around and find your own place to enjoy the serenity. No wonder this mountain had held religious significance for people since pre-Christian times. Take along a picnic, something to drink, a camera and friends or family. We bought tickets at a booth on La Rambla, 27.50 euros buys a ticket on the metro, train ticket to either the cable car OR the funicular to the monastery, you must decided before you buy your ticket, unlimited rides on the funiculars on the mountain and all return tickets, quite a bargain. Trains leave every hour, it's an easy 50 minute trip and not necessary to go with a tour, unless you are more comfortable that way.

Again, this was part of Barcelona Day Tours (recommended by Trip Advisor) and booked through our travel agent.
We were a group of 14. This was outstanding, the views, the area, breathtaking - a must see!

“Unforgettable trip”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

Montserrat is one of the most beautiful places we have visited. The monastery itself is an interesting place to visit (I would just say - a bit too crowded to admire), but these are the magnificent views and the surrounding mountains that are so much worth seeing. We do recommend that you do not only see the monastery, but also take some short trips in the area. From the monastery, you can go down a bit (by a cableway) and then have a nice walk to a cave. There is also the second cableway, which goes up the monastery. From there, apart from seeing the most spectacular views possible, there are several mountain trails. Some are very short (eg. half an hour), some a bit longer, so you can choose something for yourself, depending on how much time you have, and whether you enjoy walking. The trails lead to different caves and little chapels – and the views are again magnificent. The trails are not demanding, but it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes.

“Go early in the day if you can.”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Our tour left at 7:30am from our cruise ship, and I"m glad it did, because by the time we left after the tour was over the parking lots were all full and people were parking all the way up and down the road. This is a MUST SEE side trip from Barcelona, and look at the countryside and this amazing cathedral and monastery up on a craggy mountain. I did not take the funicular to the top, but it can be done. The little coffee shop in the village has pretty good food and there is a grocery store to buy supplies for picnicking at the top. Our guide told us you can rent rooms in the monastery when they have availability. I"m sure it's beautiful after all the tourists leave.
