Hotel Abat Cisneros
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Montserrat

We took the train from Barcelona and the narrow RR up to the top of the mountain. This hotel is hard to find on the internet... TripAdvisor said at first that Montserrat did not have any hotels! It is very nice. Roomy by Europeon standards. Clean. And so wonderfully quiet. All the day tourists go down on the last train and there is silence. And you can still visit the Black Madonna - late at night and early in the morning. After seeing the lines in the day time, I was alone with her twice. Powerful. The hotel also has a very nice restaurant. I highly recommend this for a quiet retreat.

A quick visit to see friends, where shall we meet? Montserrat suggested, a short drive for them and a train for me. Very busy when I arrived around lunchtime, the area is very popular but only accessible by coach, train, or cable car, so limited crowds. Only residents and hotel guests stay at night, so by 6pm it was really really empty, very nice, and very peaceful. The hotel was grand, helpful, pleasant smiling staff, good food int eh restaurant, clean rooms. Yes the bells from the monastery are a tad loud, especially a couple of times during the early morning......................not that bad though. Great base for walks nearby, using funicular to get high easy - alternative path back down can be a tad hard on the legs, be warned!

Room Tip: If you can get a room to the front the view down the valley is superb.

Our room was very simple but comfortable and clean. It was two twin beds instead of a double or queen, but that was fine. The view out the window was into the square & it was so nice just sitting at the desk looking out. We were there at the end of April, so the weather was lovely. Taking the advice of other people on TA, we made sure we had enough of our own food for dinner and made sandwiches in the room rather than go to the restaurant. There are a few little stores in town where we were able to pick food up. It was nice being there before & after the tourists - made you feel special :) Breakfast was substantial and very good. Plenty to eat. We would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a view into the square

Montserrat is arguably one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Cataluña, and it's great to have a night there while it's quiet, and not teeming with tourists. The hotel staff were helpful, and the cost was good for the location. Wifi was included, and the room was nice enough. The only negative I experienced was the food, specifically dinner. Once the sun goes down & the stores all shut down, you can either get food from the vending machines, or from the hotel restaurant. The hotel restaurant is way overpriced and not worth the money, so I'd recommend bringing in your own food for the evening so you don't break the bank. The breakfast was included in the price & was good. Definitely consider staying here if you'd like to spend more time at Montserrat; you can't beat the location!

Room Tip: Request a room with the view of the monastery... otherwise you're looking at some boulders right...

Montserrat is definitely worth the visit and staying for a night in the mountains is much more rewarding than just a quick stay with other tourists. Montserrat is crowded with tourists during the day but in the evenings and mornings it's quite peacful. Notice that there are several walking tracks so you can easily spend couple of days exploring them. Also there were much less crowd in the nature compared to the crowded central square. This is the only hotel up in the mountain.

The hotel itself is pretty basic, an ex-monastery so don't expect luxury. Service was nice and the price did include breakfast, which was really basic. Staff was friendly. Notice that the corridors are really noisy but people seemed to get to their beds early. There is also a restaurant in the hotel.

If you want to experience some of the calmness and serenity Montserrat has to offer, you should stay overnight at Abat Cisneros.
That way you enjoy the peaceful evening and the beautiful sunrise in the morning.
By 11 am the area will be crowded with tourists and the peace is gone.

The hotel itself is very plain and the rooms are simple but clean and spacious.
Don't expect any luxury here.

We dined at the hotel's restaurant and the food was average -
nothing fancy but pretty much the typical spanish food you get in the restaurants in the countryside.
The hot buffet breakfast on the other hand was surprisingly good - it offered all we could ask for.

You have to remember that you're in Catalonia, where people are proud and that sometimes
comes across as being rude - just treat them with respect and service gets better.

I would recommend the "half-board" as the price includes the dining menu (3 courses) and the full breakfast. The price/quality ratio is very good.

Room Tip: Always ask for a room "con buenas vistas"

We arrived on Dec 25, 2013 and we were already awed by the view of the mountain. The hotel is tired and old but we were here for the sacred place so we didn't mind it. Every morning we were treated to a beautiful sunrise and spectacular view from our window. Services were just standard but frankly I was expecting the hotel to be a monastery so it was ok. The surprise was the restaurant, excellent food, dessert and coffee.

One drawback was the shower control, it was either too hot or just cold. Other than that I was thankful that the hotel was so strategically located.

Room Tip: Always ask for a room with a view
