Review of Aeri de Montserrat

Aeri de Montserrat
Ranked #5 of 11 things to do in Montserrat

Despite not being quite an attraction itself, it is a ride you remember for long time. The gondolas are really high above the rocks, which makes it both great viewpoint and an exciting ride. Worth to plan your journey to Montserrat this way.
Of course it's nothing to worry about unless you are scared of heights in general.

This was difficult for my kids...the adults crowded them out and they ended up in the center and couldn't see a thing. Probably just the people we were around, but had I to do it over, I would have taken the train up instead of the aeri.

Aeri de Montserrat

Our trip starts from Barcelona since our ticket from Placa d'Espanya was a round trip for a family of four from the train station to Montserrat via the aeri(gondola). Be aware you have to decide to use either the aeri (cable car) OR the rack train (Cremallera de Montserrat) combination tickets while in Barcelona. Once you buy the tickets you have to either get off the aeri train stop or the next one for the rack train. The train ride to aeri station is 61 minutes one way so make sure you plan for this. I would advise not to leave Barcelona later than 12 noon. The last gondola ride down the mountain in summer was 7 pm. Don't miss it! The trains to and from Barcelona leave once an hour only so you have to plan for this as well.

The actual Gondola ride once you get to the Aeri station was great. It was smooth and relatively a quick 5 minute ride to the monestary level. This is the level where you catch the next funicular up the mountain or down the mountain.
The Sant Joan funicular continues another 820 feet above the monastery.
The other funicular goes downwards towards the Santa Cova chapel. The Moreneta was originally located in the Santa Cova (sacred cave), While the original Black Virgin statue is now in the basilica, a replica sits in the cave. The two funiculars together on a a combo ticket cost about 9.50 euros for adults and half price for kids. The 20-minute walk to the chapel This was actually the fun part of the trip. Every hundred yards or so that will be a religious statue to take Pictures of. Because of the views you will get some very amazing pictures. Not many people do the hike so it is sometimes solitary. Many more people take the St Joan funicular for the view. To me the hike and funicular to Santa Cova was a lot more interesting.

Don't forget to leave time for seeing the moreneta at the monestary! Women need to wear long skirts or pants ( bring a change of clothes if needed) plus no bear shoulders or revealing tops. The line can be quite long ... About 45 minutes from the front door to see the Black Virgin Statue. You can skip line and just walk into main church where you can see the Black Madonna from afar.

The last part of your trip is back down the mountain in the gondola and back to Barcelona. if you do it right and it happens to be a day that the MAGIC FOUNTAIN is running... like a SUNDAY... you will end up in Placa D'Espanya in time for the 9 pm Magic Fountain

Cable car right up a mountain - what's not to love!? Very safe, very stable, but you will be scared at the height. Definitly not for those afraid of heights, but an excellent experience for everyone else!

So I thought this was the only way to get up to the Monastery of Montserrat. I was excited but my traveling buddies....not so much and when we got up there and saw other modes of transportation options they were even less happy with me. :) But we did take the gondola both ways and it was actually a good decision as the lines for the train were really long but we were basically alone on the gondola. It was built in 1930, the waiting room at the bottom has pictures and information of the build as well as vending machines and rest rooms. So the short wait is filled with learning about the gondola. The trip up takes about 5 minutes and it has beautiful views, you're flying up the mountain over steep cliffs. I would recommend it and would do it again but if you have people in your party that are afraid of heights or just don't like gondolas... there are other ways to get up to Montserrat.
Happy flying :)
