“Very good beach hotel”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

First, the positives: as everyone says: perfect location directly across the street from the beach. The breakfast is great with a huge selection. The staff is very helpful. Views from the balcony is also great. The rooms are just okay however. The bed is very hard. The chairs are plastic. The a TV has only one English language channel and it's a French news channel. Bathroom is fine. Internet worked well. It's a bit pricey for what you receive, but a good choice, and I would stay again.

Room Tip: Balcony room overlooking the Sea

We were gay travellers in Sitges for the first time this year. The hotel seemed to have a mixed clientele of families, older travellers and gay travellers but again they appeared to be of the older age bracket.

1. Location
This is the best selling point of the hotel, its great location. It's right on the beach front and in the heart of Sitges. You are close to all the main beaches, amenities, bars, restaurants and nightlife.

2. Room
We booked our room through an offer on a website so didn't expect a sea view - and we didn't get! Our room had a nice view over Sitges with the hills behind. No balcony unfortunately although many of the rooms do. The decor was a little dated and functional - all greys and magnolias, not much style. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. One day one of our easy chairs inexplicably disappeared but as we weren't in the hotel much we didn't comment. Wi-fi was pretty reliable all over the hotel.

3. Restaurant/bar
We didn't use the restaurant and it never looked busy whilst we were there. There is a nice bar at the front for pre-going out drinks but it's not a place that will ever be the life and soul of the party. We had breakfast once at the hotel, paying 12 euro each. If you like an all you can eat buffet style breakfast then it represents excellent value for money. A massive choice of cold and hot food available.

4. Staff
All of the staff that we came into contact with were professional, polite, courteous and helpful.

5. Extras
The hotel has a gym but really it's just a small room with a couple of machines. There is a small pool with some recliners at the front of the hotel but being opposite the beach I didn't use it.

6. Overall
If you want a quiet stay but still be in the heart of the city then it's a great location, which is what you are really paying a premium for. Some interior modernisation and colour would be nice but kind staff and a clean room.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view certainly request when you book. No chance otherwise.

Booked this hotel as a tag on at the end of a cruise, expecting to keep the luxury going. Looked great on paper and the reception and receptionists all looked the part. Wasn't quite as grand but was adequate. However the maid (and it wasn't her fault) when cleaning rooms at 9:15 in the morning, had to drag beds and various other items of furniture over the tile floors in the adjacent bedrooms. Loudly. We didn't come here to be early to bed and early to rise (probably most people in Sitges don't) so we had banked on being able to sleep until maybe 10:30. No chance. I'm thinking the hotel needs to invest in some carpet on the feet of the bed. Also the walls are very thin. Could here the guys in the next room singing Abba when in the shower. Tuneful - but again not when trying to get a pre-club sleep.

This hotel is, as I say, best to stay in if a family. If you prefer going out around the town go somewhere else.

This hotel is very well situated on the beach and the room and bathroom were very clean. However for the price we paid, €200 a night for a back room looking straight into a blank wall (no mountain view as expressed on the web page), the hotel was very basic. The room fridge was very small and did not keep anything really cold. There was no coffee or tea making facilities, something that the very basic hotel has. There is free Wifi in the rooms, but extremely slow when there are a crowd using it. Breakfast is not included, for which there was a further charge of €12 per head, even for coffee and toast. The buffet breakfast was of a good standard, although the eggs were extremely greasy and I would imagine, unhealthy. One high point was the level of service form the reception. It was nothing but excellent. This, however, cannot be said for the service at the terrace bar. With no more than six people in the bar, I waited nearly 10 minutes, with the waiter walking past several times before I got up and walked out.
In future we would forgo the beach front advantage for a better value hotel back off the beach. I would recommend that if you are not rolling in cash, you look elsewhere for better value. Maybe in low season you would get better value here.

Stayed a week at Calipolis - was able to accommodate a late change to my booking even in high season.

Unparalleled location - highly recommend a sea view room, with good sized balcony and stunning views of the beach and promenade.

I did not utilise the gym / restaurant - however the breakfast was on a par with 4+ star establishments in Spain - a good selection of various foods and drinks, all fresh and replenished. Was a very well executed breakfast offering - could rival 5 star accommodation in major metropolitan cities in terms of breakfast.

Room size and amenity was good value for money - it was simple, clean/tidy beach front accommodation.

Reception was well attended, including security.

Room service was very professional and flexible re timing (cleaning right up until late afternoon).

Highly recommend this hotel as an affordable mid-range beach side accommodation with a view. Superb location relative to beach / restaurants / shopping and night life.

For the price, Calipolis represents compelling value for money.

This hotel has gone downhill the last couple years. Paint is peeling, customer service in lacking, housekeeping is horrible, and it smells (not in a good way).
First impressions count, and one can't help notice the odour when walking into the lobby or the hallways. Luckily the rooms did not smell.
Second, on the first day housekeeping did not replenish any of the toiletries so I called to ask for more. But they came with only half the items. It is obviously not a priority and perhaps they will get the point and be better tomorrow. No better on days 2 and 3. On day 4, they did not even replace dirty towels. So I called the front desk. Once again only a couple items were replenished so I pointed out to housekeeping all the items that were missing. She stormed out and with my door closed I could still hear her mumbling in Spanish as she stormed down the hall. She didn't come back so I called again. This time they brought the remaining items, including a half used bottle of lotion that looked like it had been pulled out of a dirty toilet. When I took the bottle to the front desk and told them how disgusting it was, the only reply was that they would talk to housekeeping. No apology, nothing!
And in general the state of the hotel is in dire need of some maintenance.
We have been a loyal customer of Hotel Calipolis for the past 10 years. But it is now obvious that they no longer want or deserve our business. Next year we will book one of the highly rated hotels or AirBnB.
On the positive side of things - it is the best location for the gay beach across the street.

The hotel is, in my opinion, in the best location for a beach hotel. Literally opposite the beach. For those that are looking for the "gay-beach" it is directly opposite. I would recommend that a sea view room as opposed to a mountain view room, as the mountain view rooms do not have balconies. The breakfast is more than adequate, and there is plenty of selection of food. The only small criticism that I may have is that the pool could be a little larger taking into account the number of guests the hotel can accommodate.Having said that, the beach is just 50 metres away!
