“Pleasant memories”
Reviewed 31 July 2007

I arrived at the Calipolis with mixed feelings and expectations based on the Tripadvisor reviews. The exterior of the hotel is in stark contrast with its interior design: with my room on the top floor and a stunning view of the sea and the well-groomed promenade, my mixed feelings soon disappeared. The neatly furnished and decorated room was not huge but to make up for this, the bathroom was rather spacious and extremely well stocked with toiletries. Do not expect tea and coffee making facilities though. AC was also OK although not really indispensable in mid-June. WIFI worked well in the room, though the card I bought was for one go, no log on, log off possibilities. The only computer in the hall would have been cheaper but is was always booked. The breakfast room opened at 8 sharp, no matter how many guests queued in front of the doors. Breakfast was excellent, good variety of cooked and cold dishes. Breakfast could go for a five-star facility. The swimming pool was a joke, only good for decoration for poolside parties. The beaches across the road, however, were close. Deckchairs were quite expensive compared to other similar beaches a bit further south the coast, but of course you can always choose lo lie in the sand free of charge. All in all, Calipolis was a pleasant surprise after the negative reviews I had read. I have to admit though that colleagues said that I was lucky enough to get one of the best rooms on the top floor. As a conference participant I got a special rate of €130 for B&B which I felt was reasonable for the location of the hotel and my room. Sitges, except for one minor but not disturbing shortcoming, is a wonderful place. The beachfront is lined with pleasant restaurants of which Santa Maria is a must. If you take a flight home from Barcelona, choose the bus rather than the train to the airport.

Our party of 5 couples booked in June 2006, five Junior Suite, at a rate of €130 a night for May 2007. We each paid a deposit of €97.50, which would be deducted from our final bill. When we checked in, the
reception staff tried to tell us that the Standard rooms we were given were Junior Suites. Then after we complained they told us that all of the Junior Suites had been given out to a large conference being held at the same time as our stay. Complaining did no good,as the reception staff were not interested. We spoke to the Directora Comercial who whilst she listened, she also was unable to help but agreed to give us a rate of €85 a night for the Standard Rooms - which were very basic indeed.

Upon checking out some of us forgot about out deposit, but when we contacted the hotel a couple of days later, to have our deposits refunded, they eventually told us that our deposit was in addition to the €85 quoted as the Standard rooms were in fact €115 a night. One of the couples upon checking out did remember to ask for their deposit and after a lengthy argument were refunded their €97.50.

No amount of correspondences along with contacting the Head Office in Barcelona, achived anything. We will never stay at the Calipolis again.

We stayed for the 2nd time and I must admit the service of the front desk staff and the breakfast waiters is much, much better now. It seems somebody from the hotel management must have read all those negative comments about their staff. However, we were - despite a very low rate booked through (--) - lucky to got upgraded to a Junior suite. Only the early breakfast time during the week and the small pool we didn't like that much. I will always stay here again, if affordable.

We arrived at the hotel late on a Friday night and were handed our room key after check in. I asked if this was the junior suite we had booked (and paid a 10% deposit for 11 months ago) and were told "no!, hotel is full". After pushing and arguing still no further explanation. We then found that 5 other friends bookings/ had all been bumped from junior suites this weekend. No apology and no explanation other than the fact we may or may not get the room we booked in a few days. After confirming the rate that night and the next day, we decided to stay in the sea view room. On all occasions, reception staff were surly, unapologetic and unhelpful.

The hotel itself has a great location and our standard sea view room was really nice with a comfortable (if slightly too hard bed) and the view from our 6th floor balcony was stunning. The TV had no English channels but we weren’t there to watch that. The rooms were kept clean but the cleaners were more than mean with toilet products to the extent that we had to eventually buy our own. Sound insulation is appalling, thankfully our immediate room noises were disturbing but was mostly chatting or tv not more embarrassing noises which our friends were often woken by. The non-inclusive €14 pp breakfast was great but better value can be found close by.

Without exception, our room and all six friends rooms all had problems at check in or check out. They tried to overcharge most of us at check out either by not subtracting the original deposit we paid 11 months ago or denying the agreed rate and trying to charge a €20-30 higher one. The only time we got to speak to the manageress was at check out 8 days later. She neither would honour the rates quoted and was rude and un helpful simply asking “did you like you room, enjoy your stay?” when we were simply trying to get them to charge us correctly. This seemed to be a delaying tactic as she knew we had flights to catch. Disgusting!

Its such a shame as the hotel itself is well decorated and has an unbeatable location but none of us will return unless the ownership/ management is changed. 5 star views, 4 star hotel, 1 star service!

Have stayed here a couple of times. Last time was for pleasure and having walked around most of Sitges (it's very easy and everywhere is in walking distance) I couldn't see a better hotel of this standard. OK it's not top of the range, but it's modern clean and bright with OK service, good breakfast although it's crazy closing the restaurant at 10:00am. (especially if you've been late night drinking/clubbing). The location is the big plus. 2mins walk to the gay beach and 5-10mins walk to all the pubs, clubs and restaurants.
Previous reviewers mention the "paper thin walls" which does mean there can be noise if you have rowdy neighbours, but not a patch on the noise you'd suffer if you stayed in some of the other hotels up the tiny streets.
Only one other gripe - they've been building the underground car-park now for two years! There is noise in the mornings so go for a high floor and make sure you don't have a room overlooking the side street.

Stayed at Calipolis in Sitges for 6 nights. Nice looking, contemporary hotel. Clean rooms but be warned the walls are paper thin. You can hear the guy sneeze in the room next to you and people walking and talking in the room above. Lots of loud construction noise as well.

The front desk clerk was pleasant but when we asked where we could park our car he said find a place on the street (but their website said they had hotel parking). When I was bringing our luggage in the bellman saw, didn't offer to help and then went back into the hotel. We could have used some help with baggage. Our room was nice but we had thought we were getting an ocean view and only got a partial ocean view.

Overall an OK experience. Sitges is a beautiful place.

I happened to discover Calipolis on my last daytrip to Sitges when I visited their outdoor bar. This is probably the best hotel I have seen in Sitges. Beautiful simple rooms with GORGEOUS views ! I loved every moment of my stay here. The bathrooms are great and large!

I would stay here again but ....I do agree about the service at the reception and booking. I think they are trained to say ' NO' like a capital one ad. We asked for a higher floor- NO , internet - NO you have to come down to us to get the telefonica card. The restaurant is more NOT open. So the best way to deal with it is not pick up the phone. The location and view make up for the service. By the way dont forget to checkout 'PICNIC' and PIZZA EXPRESS just in front of Calipolis for great service and food.

  • Liked — Location...great rooms!
