“Sleek & Modern - Designer thought of everything!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2013

Was at SITGES for the Film Festival.

I stayed primarily at the Melia (which is nice) because it was center of the festival. However I prefer modern and newer rooms and the pricing was better so I changed to Avenida.

Glad I did! Everything is new, service was quick. Attendant immediately took care of my bags. The wooden entryway and "Feng Shui" feel of the building is inviting.

Room was incredibly nice. What I liked is they designed it to the T... they thought of everything. Wooden panel walls, large closet space that looks like it came from a Poliform catalogue. The bathroom has a cute vanity for the ladies. The shower and toilet both have closed in doors so you have privacy. Bedding is uber comfortable - I slept like a baby. I felt I was getting quality.

On the rooftop, they serve affordable sushi that's fresh, coffee, cocktails, etc with a 360 view of Sitges (the entire water and hillside). On the lowest level a very high end spa for facials and massages using Carita products - place is a sanctuary.

I liked how the rooms from the hallway looked like individual apartments... you felt you were entering your own place. The internet service is free and quick.

The location is amazing! Right on the beach and also 2 blocks you are in the city center. In addition it is very affordable for the quality, service, attention to detail and 5 star amenities.

A bit about me: I am in my early 30s from Manhattan, but a world traveler, I live out of my suitcase (literally) and live hotel to hotel. I used to have a travel blog as it's my passion. I will be posting all my hotel stays on Tripadvisor. After a few #fails from advice on Tripadvisor, I realized the importance for professional, honest, discerning feedback for someone who doesn't want to end up in the wrong place. A good deal for me is quality, comfortability, cleanliness and service and overall experience for the right price.

Room Tip: All rooms are great.

Literally in the heart of Sitges we stayed here in late August as we wanted to experience Festa Major. We wanted to stay in town rather than drive in each day. Having read some of the reports beforehand we were a bit concerned but we didn't need to be. The staff were efficient and friendly. Our room was gorgeous and spotlessly clean, if a little on the small side but it had been efficiently thought out and was sleek and modern. The bed was comfy as were the pillows. There was no balcony but that didn't matter. The hotel was quiet even though busy, we were on the fifth floor and literally didn't see anyone else on our floor during our stay apart from the cleaners. The roof bar and pool area is great during the daytime and evening. Some would say the pool is small but the beach is literally steps away! Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice and availability even if you went a bit later for breakfast. One disappointment was that to park at the hotel was €25 per day which we thought was outrageous, however, we parked on the roads with no problems - be careful where you park though as some of the first few lines of streets have parking meters.

The spa was simply amazing - our stay included one 1.5 hour use. It was so good that we paid €15 to go again on our last day. No chlorine is used in the pools, only salt. In the big pool you could simply float for ages and it was so relaxing. The water jets in the spa pool pummelled every area of our bodies. My husband was much braver than I and went in the freezing cold dip pool but I only managed to knee height!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely go back. its close to the beaches, convenient and there are many lovely restaurants nearby. The tourist information office is just beside the train station and has a wide range of information. The trains to Barcelona are frequent and fast.

Just returned following a 4 day pleasant stay. Feel the online images of the hotel fail to live up to the attention to detail of the decor throughout the hotel, which is really of a high quality. Our experience similar to other reviews issues concerning little niggles:

- Within an hour of arriving the leg of my bed fell off (not sure how). As the housekeeper was unable to replace it, we were moved to an adjoining room having unpacked and settled in.

- The lighting in the bedroom is very poor although chic in appearance. If you are an individual with poor sight, the lighting in the bedroom is not ideal even with numerous free standing lights to assist.

- Rooms cleaned to a high standard daily, but lots of dust had accumulated under our bed, which clearly had developed over a period of time.

On the plus side, staff were very friendly, and helpful. Very good access to the beach and the metro, a 10 min walk and to Barcelona a mere 25 mins by Metro. Good range of shops and restaurants within the town centre.

Flying to Barcelona airport is the best option for accessing the hotel easily. Avoid Gerona Airport - a costly mistake for us. It's 1.5 - 2 hours from Sitges unless you want to pay up to 200 Euros for transfer there and back by taxi. We got there by coach, taxi, metro and a further taxi. In total it took an additional 2 hours on top of our journey ( one way only) and an additional cost of 300 Euros for transfers on top of the cost of the holiday. Not cheap by any means..!

Nice enough hotel in a good location, possibly trying a little too hard to ‘look good’ but need to get back to basics in terms of maintenance, service and value.

I thought others were just moaning minnies, but I too found myself picking up on lots of tiny little issues in our Junior Suite on the 4th floor which alone are nothing to worry about but together get annoying. Some examples:

➢ Lock on patio door was broken, so felt less than secure. Another reviewer mentioned this, so unsure why its not fixed.

➢ Annoying flouresant night lights. Couldn’t find an off switch anywhere and they were really bright. Had to remove the power key to get them to switch off.

➢ Many of the TV channels (English speaking in particular (CNBC, BBC, etc) were ‘fuzzy’ and seemed to have signal issues.

➢ Quite a lot of dust around on sockets, phones, etc. I wasn't convinced my bed hadn't been slept in but wasn't sure. So some attention to cleaning needed.

➢ Paneling coming away from walls in shower (looked cheap stuff)

➢ The open bathroom was great but the door to the toilet was missing (it used to have one as there was a runner, but no door). So you really did get intimate with your partner or room mate.

➢ Just a few cans in the mini bar. Either have a proper mini bar, or don’t bother.

➢ Room service menu was poor, and couldn’t work out when it was available.

➢ In room information was also almost non existent with lots of normal in room information not mentioned or included.

There were many other similar little things. Nothing serious, but lots of little things.

None of it spoilt the stay and we did enjoy our time there but would we go back? Perhaps not, the Calipolis next door has nice rooms which whilst not as fancy are at least functional and working with the added benefit of balconies with promenade/sea views.

The spa was excellent, and an amazing feature for a hotel of this size. Large salt indoor pool/lap pool, hydro therapy pool, cold plunge, sauna and steam. My massage was also high quality (although they could do with better massage tables).

Other reviews have noted poor staff at reception. I didn’t find that was the case. The reception staff were great. Helpful, friendly and welcoming.

This place just needs some better maintenance management and a wider service offering and it would be great.

Like another reviewer wrote, there are some positives. It's just a couple blocks away from the beach and an easy stroll to the main parts of town. However, the service was severely lacking and rooftop pool is very small with hardly any chairs. They have a very modern set-up that looks pretty but hardly functional (e.g., no shelf inside the shower, nowhere to put shampoo or anything, no hooks next to the shower). Arriving after an exhausting night train from Grenada to Barcelona, then local train to Sitges, we were tired and hoping to relax. Of course when we checked in our rooms weren't ready, so we made for the EXTREMEMLY crowded beach. (Seriously, we had to wait for a couple people to leave before we could squeeze in a couple towels in, it was a Sunday we later realized). When we returned to the hotel an hour even after they said our rooms would be ready, the rooms were still not ready! After some checking we discovered one was ready and they said the other would be done in 10 minutes. So we went up to the ready room, which was the kids room, and waited. And waited. 45 minutes later and a call downstairs, we finally heard someone cleaning next door--they hadn't even started! They gave us a very nice 2nd room that we could adjoin with the kids' room and they said they would give us the larger room at the smaller room price. However, upon check out, this wasn't the case. The person who had told us that didn't leave any notes or instructions and honestly we just wanted to get out of there and weren't up to arguing. It seemed like whenever we needed to talk to anyone at the front desk we were either ignored or waited in line for a while, it was ridiculous. I think we were the wrong "clientele" there or something. So while the rooms were nice, the whole place just felt off, would not stay here again or recommend it to anyone traveling as a family.

Room Tip: Corner room facing the beach is really nice.

First impressions excellent with a very friendly check in experience!

Room was very modern and stylish. There were a few functionality issues for example nowhere to hang towels, no full length mirror, few clothes hangars.

Spa is excellent and totally relaxing.

Loved the roof top bar.

Sun beds not very comfortable but ok for a few hours.

Good location, only a few minutes walk into the old town and the sea seconds away.

Would return.

First, the positives. The Avenida Sofia is in a great location, just a few paces from the beach and town centre. The hotel is furnished to a high standard and boasts high-quality fixtures and fittings, including large and comfortable beds. Its roof-top terrace offers great views of the surrounding area and a stylish environment for an evening drink.

With the exception of the ‘superior’ rooms, which are fairly claustrophobic, the hotel is a nice environment in which to stay for a few days. There are a few small details that could be improved but these don’t detract unduly from the feeling of quality. For example, the complimentary toiletries are barely enough for a single use and the rooms do not feature a hospitality tray (although a modestly-stocked minibar is provided).

Unfortunately, the hotel’s décor isn’t enough to make up for the lack-lustre service, which falls somewhat short of the hotel's 4-star rating.

The much talked about roof terrace is pleasant but is spoiled by the slightly condescending attitude of some of its staff. This detracts from what should be a relaxing environment, as does being repeatedly asked to move so that the furniture can be rearranged.

Room service was frustrating and expensive. One incorrect order resulted in two very small cups of coffee being delivered instead of a large pot of coffee. An honest mistake, of course, but not only was the charge added to the bill, an additional (hefty) room service charge for bringing the correct order was also added. Despite notifying the receptionist at the time, it still took a lengthy debate at check-out to have the mistake rectified.

Similarly, a simple request for an iron to be delivered to the room was dealt with as though it was unprecedented. These are small details but a hotel which clearly has such a high opinion of itself as this one does should be able to get these things right.

It was disappointing that the hotel’s spa facilities were not available to guests at a more reasonable rate. That said, it was difficult to get any detailed information since the one spa receptionist seemed constantly swamped with enquiries and, after queuing for 15 minutes, we were none the wiser.

For sure, the Avenida Sofia is a very nice hotel and it’s in a great location, but the attitude to service is a curious mix of low-budget and slightly unjustified superiority, which makes the premium price tag seem rather out of place.

Room Tip: Go for a Deluxe Sea View room. The Superior rooms are small and slightly claustrophobic. Pick a room...
