“Good value. Good restaurant”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

This will be the third time we've stayed at the Imperial Tarraco. I'm not too sure where the bad reviews come from for this hotel, but for the price, the overall standard is very good. I have family living in the area, who are native Catalans, who use this hotel for special events, and they are very, very fussy where they go, so that speaks for itself.

The rooms are clean and tidy. Bathrooms have a mixer type shower. Not ideal, but does the job OK. There is a shower curtain rather than screen and you do get a very wet floor afterwards. The view from the balcony is breathtaking. It is worth paying a little extra to get a sea view because the hotel overlooks the very well preserved Roman amphitheatre. However, the cheaper rooms do have a partial sea view if you are on a serious budget. OK, towels are a bit thin and the toiletries are a bit on the budget side, but if that's a big problem, pop up the road and buy some decent shower gel from the supermarket for a euro. Bed is comfortable and quite firm. The one pillow wasn't enough, so I phoned down for an extra one and learned a new Spanish word (almohida) in doing so. There is Wi-fi in the room, and it is very reliable and fast. I was happily streaming video without a problem. Our air conditioner wasn't working or sometimes decided to blow out hot air. While this wasn't a problem at Easter, I can see it would be a big issue in August, because it does get hot at that time of the year.

The restaurant menu is extensive and very cheap. The waiter was very helpful, and was very keen to practice his English on us so explained all the combinations of dishes in great detail (!). The quality was good, particularly the salmon and chicken filled with ham and cheese. They also do a 'pica pica' menu, which seems to be growing in popularity in the area. Basically it is tapas, and the idea is you order 4 or 5 and share it between the table. The breakfast is served until a sensible 10.30am on weekdays and was included in our tariff. On two of our days, the hotel was pretty empty, so it was very pleasant and leisurely. There is a good selection of ham, bread, cold meats, cakes, cereals with fresh croissants and excellent coffee. However, the downside was that there were only two coffee machines (the capsule nespresso type) and when the hotel was busy, it was a real pain having to queue for coffee and then wait when the capsule predictably got jammed in the machine.

The bar area is very pleasant. We spent a very nice afternoon having bought a big basket of strawberries from a nearby greengrocer and drank a couple of bottles of Cava in the hotel grounds in the sunshine. The outside area is great for lounging around after breakfast and reading a little before walking down the Rambla Nova.

On check-in, you get a pass to visit the casino, which is attached to the hotel, but popular with locals. You get free entrance, but take your passport because you need to be enrolled as a member, and a free drink. When you cash in chips, you get another free drink, so if you're lucky as we were, you get free drinks and win a bit of dosh. We had the best night in there! Blackjack tables have iPads on the desk which are loaded by the croupier when you hand over some Euros. This took a bit of getting used to, but we soon got the hang of it.

In short, the service is excellent. The hotel is perhaps lacking in luxuries you get at some 4* hotels, but for the price, really, this is very good value and I've stayed at some of the World's top hotels. Location is second to none, as is the view.

Room Tip: Get a sea view

The hotel must be surviving on its location alone. There are no amenities in the room (cheap toiletries, no in room wifi, thread bare towels, no robes...) Not sure how it is possible for the hotel to have achieved a 4 star rating. It is simply not the case. So heed the warnings of the other reviewers! Very disappointing! We asked for a renovated room and was shocked at the quality or lack thereof! A real pity.... We will return to Tarragona but will certainly stay elsewhere....

Gracias y saludos.

It was just a terrible experience. By paying 49 euro per person we got refilled bottles of wine (disgusting wine, nothing to do with the label of the bottles). The starters were terrible. Not what indicated in the menu: bread and tomato that's what I eat at home! The meat, they called it duck... No way. The service pathetic. We were served water or any other drinks after having finished the starters. We had to request things to the waiters several times often without success... Husa hotels are doing a terrible job by not investing at all in these facilities. I will return to Tarragona since it is a good discovery - impressive city. No more in this crappy big hotel.

Buenas tardes,

Gracias y saludos.

this has got to be one of the worst hotel in the area, 4 star i dont think so, the rooms are filthy with the carpets holding that much dirt it is a wonder that you can see the colour in them, the bathroom is from the 70s as is the reception, were you will find the most unhelpfull people that you would wish to come across, as for the car park i booked in for 10 nights parking and was hit with a bill of 179euros, i checked out after 2 days as i needed to find a hotel that i could feel comfortable in taking a shower as the bathroom in this place is falling apart, pipes hanging off the wall ect, dropped my phone and moved the bed to retrieve it and under the bed was dirtier than the street outside, please please avoid this hotel, i have travveled to many parts of spain on business and can honestly say that this is the worst i have been in, whoever can grade this as 4 star should be ashamed or even better come to my house and value it for me this way i would get over the odds for my house, pleas dont be taken in by photos on the web as in this case the camera does lie, i will leave it up to you buyt if you have the missfortune to have been booked in here by your company please look at he room before you unpack as i think you will change your mind about staying once yo look at he place, Wilse UK

We booked for 2 nights in September for a wedding anniversary , on arriving we had been upgraded to a suite (room 302) OMG it was massive with 2 balconies with sea views. In the bedroom was an ice bucket with a bottle of sparkling wine ,chocolates also by its side. We felt like royalty. Cannot thank the management and kind reception staff for a fantastic room with a fantastic view. I don't really want to have to say this but our stay was ruined quite a lot because we had a purse stolen (we are pretty sure from our room but not certain, this is why we didn't complain) all our cards had been hacked by the time we reported it to the banks and credit card companies.
Please book this great hotel but keep your belongings with you at all times. Tarragona is an excellent place to visit we were lucky because it was fiesta with all sorts going on in the town.

Room Tip: room 302 a must

I never write comments on hotels, but this one deserves one.
It was not my first time in a 4* hotel, but it was the first time I got so badly welcomed. The guy at the front desk was wearing a t-shirt (fine in a guesthouse, but not in a 4* hotel). I had requested a room with double bed and sea view. When I arrived in the room, there were 2 single beds, the main light didn't work (hard to work with no light bulb..).
So I went back to the front desk to ask for a room with a double bed. I got told that all double bedrooms are booked. Come on! The hotel is half empty! They hardly even check on their computer, talking Spanish with a low voice so that I couldn't hear.. They clearly didn't care...
They told me I could change the day after.
The following day, I go to the front desk, and miracle! There is a room with a double bed available. I checked in into my new room. At least the lights worked properly, but still a very old style room, low quality mattress & sheets, scratches on the bathtub, radio from the 60's..
The 2 only good points were the sea view, and the TV.
Something more, I really like animals, but waking up with a small aunt on my pillow was a bit too much..
This hotel has the facilities of a 2*+, and the last renovation was clearly done before I was born...
There are clearly better hotels around, especially for 115€ a night..
It´s a no go!

Room Tip: Go to another hotel
