“A great walk”

This is the roman city walls 2nd - 3rd century BC. You can imagine yourself living here. This is not a suitable walk for anyone with a disability. You have to pay. Not recommended for August.

“Amble round the walls”
Reviewed 31 January 2013

We went here as part of our trip to Tarragona at Christmas. We rather like walled cities (Lugo is my favourite) and we were interested to see how Tarragona compared against the rest.

We used a Tarragona card, which allows you entrance into half a dozen other attractions, so it is an easy way to see many of the sights. The walls may have been Roman once, but they have been added to throughout the years. There's not much by way of interpretative boards, so unless you are familiar with the intricacies of defensive walls, some of what you see may be lost upon you. There are good views over the rest of the city.

You can either walk around and then leave by retracing your steps or you can pass through a gate at the end - but you can't get back in that way. The exit takes you out near the museum, so you can plan a nice walking tour around the city. As with the other sites, there is a little leaflet available to guide you round, but they'd run out of English ones when we were there, so again we had to contend with the French version.

Worth going, but not the greatest attraction in the city. Also, we went there in mid afternoon. There is a little set of rooms that have some information boards, but the attendant was locking up behind us as we walked through them - it was lunchtime. However, there was nothing said about them being closed, so maybe watch during quieter times. They might leave them open when it's a busier time.

“Roman Walls and British Ramparts”
Reviewed 9 January 2013

The 2nd Century B.C.E. Roman Walls of Tarragona are worth seeing. The British added ramparts during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1707. The walls and ramparts are well maintained. It is a pleasant stroll along the base of the Roman wall and on the ramparts. There are good views of the surrounding community. Well worth the visit. The cost per person is 3,15€, but buy the 10,55€ pass which allows entries to the Roman Circus, Amphitheatre and other historic sites.

“A walk around the city walls”
Reviewed 19 October 2012

This is more for the photographers and families looking for a stroll than for ordinary tourist looking for excitement. At sunset the views from the walls are not bad at all.
