“Super hotel, great location, minor issues stop it from being perfect”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

We stayed at the AC Hotel Tarrgona in April 2014 for 4 nights on a short city break.

The hotel is approx 20 mins ride/30 euros taxi ride from Tarragona airport. It is about 5 minutes walk into the modern city centre, and about 10-15 walk to the ancient city area. 5 minutes walk away from the park and 10 minutes to the nearest shopping mall.

The hotel is an fairly modern building, and is well signposted. The foyer/reception is spacious, well presented. Check-in staff were polite, friendly, friendly, spoke excellent English, and were REALLY helpful - WELL DONE!.

The room was a good size, and was obviously fairly new and modern. Room was well furnished, clean and comfortable; the only concerns we had were no lock on the bathroom door (!), which was just a frosted glass pane - a bit unnerving to be honest! Bed and sleep quality excellent. Good quality complimentary toiletries, a modern styled bathroom, shower AND bath - and everything was clean and tidy, with everything working! Plenty of lovely thick clean towels - WELL DONE!

TV was digital, good size, decent range of channels.

Now for the grizzles - very minor ones:
- view from the room non-existent, straight out on to another wall of the hotel
- slight drain smell from the shower on occasion
- CHARGE FOR WI-FI INTERNET IN THE ROOM! In this day and age?!! Wake up Marriot - your competitors offer this for FREE! Having said that, there was free wi-fi in the foyer, along with free coffee and pastries!
- price of food, not bad but not great either - especially when you can walk out of the hotel and 2 minutes away there is a great cafe with excellent food at half the price!

Checkout out was fast and efficient.

As a base to visit Tarragona this was fantastic. I would stay here again. On the whole, I can recommend this hotel.

PROS
Friendly staff
Decent sized clean rooms
Location
Good sleep quality

CONS
Strange bathroom doors and no locks!
NO FREE WI-FI IN ROOMS!
Cost of food, esp.breakfast - you can get cheaper options in cafes outside

Good quality , standard hotel.
Clean and nice. Close to city center.
Rooms are a bit small for a hotel this type but not bad.
Food is good , not the best , but good quality and fresh.
Friendly staff...

Room Tip: Road facing rooms are a bit noisy - traffic sound

We arrived at this hotel on a Thursday evening for a two night stay, after a seven hour drive. We are Marriott members and we had checked the hotel's web site before booking. On arrival we were told that we could not book a table for dinner because the restaurant was fully occupied by two groups. Although room service was available the selection is very limited (only one main course). We were then told the restaurant was closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday except for breakfast. There is no such information on the web site. The staff were very helpful in suggesting a restaurant about ten minutes walk away, and fortunately the weather was good. But this situation is simply not acceptable. We are very seasoned travellers and we do not expect this from a Marriott hotel (as we shall tell Marriott).

The AC by Marriot hotels have maximized the use of the space in their rooms by using very efficient furnishings. The rooms are bright and modern and thanks to the double paned windows, very quiet. (We were there New Year’s Eve when people party until 4:00 a.m. but all was quiet in our room.) It is also a wonderful location from which to explore the city as it is only a 15 minute walk to the Balcón del Mediterráneo. The staff at reception was very helpful; putting me in touch with Telefonica support staff when I was having network connection problems, bringing me an extension cord so I could have both the desk lamp and my computer plugged in at the same time and giving us directions and making suggestions regarding sights in the city. The hotel restaurant was closed for the holidays, which was unfortunate as there are only a couple of restaurants within walking distance.
The only fault I found with the room was the lighting. As mentioned before, there was only one plug at the desk and two were required – one for the lamp and one for the computer. Also, it was not possible to turn on the desk lamp and computer without turning on the overhead light which, early in the morning, would wake my spouse. I solved the problem by plugging the extension cord provided into the TV outlet, the one plug that is not controlled by the master switch.

Selected this hotel because of its name. It is a bit dated, and the internet was not included in the price. The entire hotel occupancy was sitting in the bar to connect to the internet because only there it was for free (in the rooms only 24 hrs connection option, for 12 euros!). Ordering a bottle of hot water ( no coffee maker in the room) will cost you 3 euro. Gym had old equipment, one spinning machine with broken saddle, other with loose saddle, the single treadmill stopped intermittently. Staff was very friendly and helpful, but I decided to move to another hotel mtr 100 further up the road on the round-a-bout, very modern, with free internet, better breakfast buffet with more selection of different foods, and ............ the same price !

Room Tip: At the rear, facing the park. When window open, nice and quite

The service at the hotel is good. Very courteous and helpful. The breakfast is nothing special - Nespresso machines, cereal boxes, some croissants and doughnuts, and very sweet juices that must be from concentrate.

The location is good if you are coming in via public transport. But if you want to be near the old city stay a bit closer. It's a 20 minute walk to the water, but if you walk down the Rambla it is very beautiful and worth it. Tarragona is tiny so I would recommend this hotel if you are on a budget and don't mind walking.

Sleek, modern business hotel, with a good location if driving. While not on business, but being older and having graduated over years of European travel from zimmer freis, pensions, and one-star hotels, and we appreciated the comfort and convenience of booking directly through Marriott and their generous cancellation policy. Staff was friendly and helpful, the room well furnished and clean, and the price competitive. Main tourist sites in Tarragona are an easy walk as are some very good seafood restaurants. As another reviewer noted, the underground garage is a bit of a challenge for something larger than a subcompact. Did not have the breakfast (there is a shop a 40 meters up the street for a quick bite in the morning). Pleasant stay and do ask for a room facing the park.
