Growing up, I heard many times that "sometimes it is better to be lucky than good". Well, this was a perfect example of a popular saying in action. Everything about this trip has been improvised, including our decision to visit Tarragona without a set plan. We programmed the GPS to take us to the #1 attraction and just drove from Barcelona. When we got there, we chose a street near the water and set out to explore the area. When looking for a restaurant, we happened to see people looking like locals going into a restaurant in a quaint street...well, that's how we found El Tiberi. What a wonderful surprise it was!!! We got there early enough to get a table on New Year's day (when everyone else had reservations). The waitstaff was unbelievably friendly and helpful. The owner himself came to greet us and explain the splendid menu which spans the entire depth and breadth of authentic Catalonian cuisine...anything from salads, escalivada and other "entradas" to quail, ox tail cooked to perfection, cocido catalan, and many other platos calientes and to finish, a variety of desserts, including authentic crema catalana, rosquillas d'Anís and other delights. The staff takes pride in their work and contributes to the pleasant atmosphere.
If you're planning on visiting Barcelona, a spin around Tarragona is a great opportunity to take a break from the huzzle-buzzle and monument visiting. Do not miss El Tiberi if you are ever in the picturesque city of Tarragona.
