Growing up, I heard many times that "sometimes it is better to be lucky than good". Well, this was a perfect example of a popular saying in action. Everything about this trip has been improvised, including our decision to visit Tarragona without a set plan. We programmed the GPS to take us to the #1 attraction and just drove from Barcelona. When we got there, we chose a street near the water and set out to explore the area. When looking for a restaurant, we happened to see people looking like locals going into a restaurant in a quaint street...well, that's how we found El Tiberi. What a wonderful surprise it was!!! We got there early enough to get a table on New Year's day (when everyone else had reservations). The waitstaff was unbelievably friendly and helpful. The owner himself came to greet us and explain the splendid menu which spans the entire depth and breadth of authentic Catalonian cuisine...anything from salads, escalivada and other "entradas" to quail, ox tail cooked to perfection, cocido catalan, and many other platos calientes and to finish, a variety of desserts, including authentic crema catalana, rosquillas d'Anís and other delights. The staff takes pride in their work and contributes to the pleasant atmosphere.
If you're planning on visiting Barcelona, a spin around Tarragona is a great opportunity to take a break from the huzzle-buzzle and monument visiting. Do not miss El Tiberi if you are ever in the picturesque city of Tarragona.

Located in a street down from La Rambla (towards the lower part of the town) and 5 mins walk from the town historic centre's many tourist eateries, this buffet place is a real find if you wish to have a good, filling meal (just make sure you don't eat any tapas earlier in the evening!).

There are several freshly cooked, tasty meat (some of them might be a bit heavy) dishes (incl. breaded chicken, lamb stew, chicken and sausages boiled with vegetables), a few fish options (fideu pasta with mussels), vegetables (incl. spinach with pine nuts, broadbeans with sausage, tuna salad), plenty of good desserts (incl. crema catalana, profiteroles, and cakes with chocolate and whipped cream, flans), and some tapas including ham and manchego cheese, croquettes and tortilla.

Help yourself and eat as much as you can for 13 Euros (dinner) and it's open until late (11.30 pm.)

The buffet at El Tiberi is like no other!
Down a side street in Tarragona it offers a lunch time buffet for less than 12euros. Drinks are not overpriced.
The two waitresses are so friendly and helpful. The tables are a little squashed, maybe not the place for romance. The buffet itself has all manner of dishes. To start there is a really good selection of salads, olives and shellfish. Every conceivable dish of Catalan meat and vegetables are on display. To make this place special they also have a blackboard of other available specials [mainly fish] which are cooked to order in small quantities, so one is able to have a real Catalan tasting session. They also cooked treats not even listed - just ask. There is also a separate grill section all in the price.
Don't mention all he lovely authentic puddings!
What a great place - don't miss it if you are in the beautiful city of Tarragona.

My spouse and I dined twice at the El Tiberi Catalonian Buffet restaurant. Each time was a joy. The buffet is open for lunch and dinner during usual Catalonian dining times. The buffet table and grill are heaped with regional foods all prepared to a high quality. Everything from grilled squab to a large bowl of escargot. We had both lunch and Sunday dinner. The was a short wait for a table on Sunday. I think both times my wife and I were the only English speakers in the restaurant. The buffet appeared to be a favorite for the local people. The price is only about 11 to 12 euros per person for all the treats that you could desire. With wine, dinner is only about 15 euros. Pass the pricey restaurants up and eat at the El Tiberi.
