O'Callaghan Eliott Hotel

Reviewed 29 November 2013

We stayed at the O'Callaghan Eliott Hotel recently and found it to be a lovely hotel. Very friendly staff. Very comfortable bed. Spacious, quiet, clean room. Plentiful English breakfast, although I avoided the scrambled eggs ( not very nice) but asked for poached / fried eggs next day and they were perfect. Ideally located in Town Centre. About 10 mins to airport. Bus stop 5 mins away. Shops 2 mins away. Cable car 10 mins away. Hotel restaurant on 8th floor with fab views over the harbour. (even better view on open veranda/ sun terrace above dining room/swimming pool.) Would visit again any time and would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We were in room 120 (first floor). This overlooked the hotel entrance. It was quiet and had a view o...

Travelling solo, this hotel proved to be in an excellent hub position for seeing Gibraltar on foot, as much as is possible on the Rock! With a spruce and clean bedroom on the 6th floor, housekeeping gained a gold star. Watching the cruise liners coming in and leaving daily was a plus. Perhaps an investment in some further element of sound proofing between bedrooms might pay off in the future. All staff at the interface appeared well trained and were helpful. Thankyou for a splendid Short birthday Break...

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the bay or alternatively over the Convent Square.

Stayed for fourth time in November 2013. Comfortable clean rooms. Efficient and friendly service. Problems with Wifi well-addressed by reception staff. Two small points: charges for Wifi still annoy me (and are a minor complication where the accommodation bill has already been paid by another company); also take note if you have anything at all in the breakfast room you get charged for full breakfast so I paid £15 for a cup of coffee and a glass of juice - not unreasonable in one sense, and I could have avoided by just making coffee in my room, but didn't think about it - hence warning others here! I suspect if I'd complained they would have removed the charge, because they are very obliging. A very good business hotel.

I had zero expectations having booked a random hotel that was included in my Orbitz booking. Curiosity led me to stay at the Callaghan Eliott hotel and spend some time checking out Gibraltar. The staff were impeccable, the rooms clean, quite quiet given that its in the town centre and all the services functioned beautifully. I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to anyone and the restaurant on the 8th floor is fantastic with commanding views over the bay and the boats. An unexpected gem of a hotel in a fascinating place. Congratulations to the management and staff on an excellent effort/performance.

I have a bad knee and need a walking stick, so we chose this hotel for its central location and its flat walk along the pedestrianised Main Street to reach restaurants and amenities. The hotel was clean and well maintained, the staff friendly, and we even managed a swim in the rooftop pool in November! When booking online we noticed the special offer of three nights with breakfast included that also included a Dolphin Adventure, and the total price was less than the basic room rate for three nights. Flights from London arrive in the morning, but rooms are not booked as available until 2pm. We got a taxi from the airport (£6:50), left our luggage in a securely locked room in reception, then went to watch the dolphins until the room was ready (for which we needed our UK jackets anyway) - highly recommended.

We stayed for along weekend and we would stay here again, the room was lovely, clean and the shower was lovely. We had a view of the rock as we were on the 6th floor, the view was fab. The staff were friendly, we arrived early and were given our room straight away. Breakfast WOW everything you could ask for, full English, eggs cooked as you want them, fruit, yogurts, cereal, pastries. The hotel is less than a minute from the Main Street and easy walk to the cable car. We went up by cable car and then walked down stopping off at the caves and tunnels, it took us about 5 hours. We walked to the airport from the hotel it took less than 30 minutes, the walk was lovely. Top tip the duty free in the airport is cheaper than the shops, wish we had known. We booked directly with the hotel and got 3 nights for the price of 2. We used the blue buses and got a Hopper ticket which cost £2.20, you can travel on any of the blue buses all day, the number 2 bus takes you to Europa Point.

My daughter and I arrived at midday from the airport to be told that our room wasn't ready and check=in was not until 2 pm. This was rather disappointing as we had been travelling since early morning and would have liked to unpack and put our feet up for a while. I notice on the web site that this is a common problem presumably because of the flight times from the UK. However we were able to store our cases away and went out to the terrace bar for coffee. It was nice to be able to sit in the sun after leaving home in freezing cold conditions. The hotel is in an ideal location, within walking distance of the main shopping and restaurant areas and it is possible to get around the whole Rock easily using the bus service. Our room on the 3rd floor was very pleasant, spacious with all the facilities one would expect from a 4 star hotel, with a small balcony, The view was not exceptional, mainly the surrounding buildings but I imagine from the upper floors would have been very nice. We had booked a twin room but on entering saw it was made up as a double. A quick call to reception and the housekeeping staff arrived promptly to separate and remake the beds, which were very comfortable .Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice and lovely situation on the 8th floor overlooking the swimming pool and the views out over the bay were exceptional. The receptionist Bouchra was an absolute delight, so friendly and helpful, a terrific asset for the hotel. We ate out mostly and can thoroughly recommend Café Rojo which is just a short walk away in Irish Town. Unfortunately the hotel restaurant was not up to standard and I would not eat there again. I felt all in all good value for money and I would stay there again.
