My husband and I stayed at the Rock in March 2011. We absolutely loved Gibraltar. We did enjoy our experience at the rock but found that the hotel was a bit overpriced, especially since it is very outdated. The decor in the room has to be from the 80s. The amazing part was that the monkeys come to your balcony, and for that I would stay here again! One monkey tried to get into our room (he was not even close but did pull the rubber from the bottom of the door) and it was awesome and made for some great photos!

My wife and I spent a week in The Rock. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Sure, The Rock is not perfect but I would like to list the good points and the bad, then give you my honest and balanced appraisal

Good points:
Reception, bar, restaurant, "front of house" areas are all well appointed, light and airy.
Standard of breakfast is excellent (fabulous choice each day), poached or fried eggs are made to order if you prefer.
Staff, without exception, were very pleasant, friendly and helpful.
Room standard OK - we stayed in a standard double room.
Pool area is fantastic! :)
We particularly liked the evening dining taking place alfresco by the poolside - a very nice idea, especially if you don't want to travel into the town centre to eat.
Housekeeping and maid service were great.

Bad points:
The corridors are dark and dreary, and desperately need decorating.
Some of the bar meals are just not worth the money... I paid £11 for a ploughman's and we sorely disappointed with the amount of food! (but for a pound more, the fish and chips portion was much more like it!)
The front elevation of the hotel really needs some repair, whitewash, new windows and general TLC - it has no "kerb appeal" at all!
We arrived on a 12.30 flight but our room was not available until 2pm. This meant us kicking around, when all we needed was a shower and a nap.... as we booked a package holiday I would have thought the the Hotel Management would have realised this and made sure the rooms were ready.

On the whole we really enjoyed our time at The Rock, and yes to be honest we would come again, but probably when (if?) the planned refurbishment takes place.

Dear FaceOfDuncan, Thank you for your review. I particularly like the way you have laid out the good and the bad and the concise nature of your comments. The ones relating to the fabric of the buidling will be addressed when we refurbish and I can promise that it is definitely a case of 'when' and not 'if'. Regarding a 2pm check in time, as you know this is pretty much an international standard and will apply when hotels have been very busy the previous evening. When we can we always endeavour to have rooms available at a much earlier time. Thank you.

With great joy to us, we have gone on to Gibraltar prospectus gemacht.Laut the hotel 4 stars have what we had a dirty old vorfanden box, the room was bad and dirty, the staff does not try to come to the guest so the motto of selbst.in unsermem room was a chair that was so dirty, so I've never seen! Conclusion, never again

We’ve been visiting Gib for the last four years and decided on this occasion to stay at the Rock.
Our last three visits have been on the eastern side of Gib at the Caleta. I shall endeavor to be as fair in my judgment as there is no value in being negative for the sake of it.
We were at the Rock for nine nights and it was approx £300 cheaper than the Caleta. That was one of the reasons for staying there along with the desire to stay in such an iconic institution.
Reception staff were fine as indeed most of the breakfast staff. The bar staff really set the scene and ambience for the bar area and terrace. They were rude disinterested and there was one lady waitress who reminded me of Fawlty Towers. She was the female version of Basil. Whilst it was uncomfortable, it was entertaining to watch her. The bar staff would continually argue in the gaze of the guests. The bar and terrace had no atmosphere at all. The Caleta has a much better offer in bar meals and atmosphere with very pleasant staff. Breakfast at the Rock is of a much higher standard than the Caleta and is included in the price. Rooms are OK but reflect the general feel of the Rock tired and very worn with a lot of peeling paint especially on ceilings. Housekeeping was first class and always consistent at the Rock. Yes we had some issues as well, a leaky air con unit which got repaired within 24hrs and a doggy fridge. Swimming pool and pool side much better at the Rock as it is better managed and much bigger and well maintained. The manager at the pool side was slightly intense. You have to cross a busy road to get to it. The view at the Caleta from the room is a million % better than the Rock when you compare looking out onto the immediate med at the Caleta, compared to looking at a busy port and docks at the Rock. The hill leading to the hotel is a killer even at 49.
Judging by the clientele the Rock seems to have the patronage of the more mature upper class who still wish to step back in time and be able to say '' I stayed at the Rock''. Will we return to the Rock next year? I expect not , for a more relaxing holiday with a more all round offer it will be the Caleta even if it does cost more.

As an aside the Bland day excursions have gone into steep decline. Two years ago we went on the day trip to Tangiers and decided to go again. For £75 each don't bother the guide spent most of his day on his mobile phone texting and chatting and totally ignoring his group. Last year to Cadiz wasn't any better. Dirty buses etc.

We stayed here for our main holiday, 4 nights. The hotel reception area and staff were helpful, especially when there were no taxis at the airport when we arrived so we had to ring them and they kindly ordered a taxi to pick us up. Our room was disappointing - the air conditioning unit was dripping on the TV when we arrived so I moved it out of the way and we reported it to reception. Nothing was done so we left a note on the door. However it was still dripping when we left so it was not useable at all. The windows did not fit properly and it really needed an upgrade for a four star hotel. The public areas were comfortable and there were good facilities. Great views over the bay and nice pool area. Can recommend eating in wisteria terrace bar as food was good and lovely surroundings. Breakfast OK, if you like buffet style, but it was best to ask for boiled eggs or poached eggs as there were made specifically for you and not hanging around for ages.

Room Tip: Choose rooms on the first and second floors as these are probably more up to date than on 4th floor where we were.
