“Tired old place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

We have just returned from a 3-night stay at this Hotel. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful. We booked a double room, but got two single beds unfortunately but didn't feel inclined to say anything because we'd had to wait for the room to be made up to start with! No balcony, which was a shame.

The room and hotel generally is extremely dated and tired looking and could really do with a complete overhaul.

We were in Gibralter for a look around so weren't at the hotel all the time, but we did find it extremely odd that the pool bar would shut between 2 and 5, round about the time we were returning.

All in all, it was nothing more than average, not offensive, just average. Great location though being very close to Main Street and the cable car for the Barbary Macaques, which is why we went!

Booked in for a single night for 2 nights either end of a sailing trip.

Upsides: only £54 inc continental breakfast a night. Excellent location and friendly, helpful staff. Hotel does have good WiFi, but had to ask for the key as there is no information in the rooms about anything! Very good selection of channels on the TV

Downsides: A single room is a single room with a single bed and little space. Furnishings are dingy , tired and very dated. There is air conditioning in the room from a free standing unit, but so noisy its either cool or sleep. There was no opening window in the 2nd room I had. Breakfast was basic and adequate, but instant coffee sums the place up - it doesn't take much effort or cost to serve good coffee.

With more attention and some investment, this could be a great place to stay. I would think it is becoming an embarrassment to the Gibraltar tourist authority. I would recommend spending a little more as the Bristol is certainly bad value for a single room.

Room Tip: If you want a good room - go somewhere else

Stayed overnight whilst we were staying in Spain. As most of the reviews say, the hotel is very dated (very true) however we found it clean. Beds were quite comfortable and the location is fantastic. We would definitely recommend to anyone staying in Gibraltar. Along with a taxi tour of the rock. Very much worth the money (approx £80 for 4) as long as you are not paying too much for the hotel of course. just don't expect 5 star luxury. Would stay in the Bristol if we returned to Gibraltar.

We had a week here in June and was slightly apprehensive after reading some reviews but we were pleasantly surprised. Yes the whole hotel could do with a revamp but this would then put up the price. The location is ideal for getting around the Rock. The rooms were large and bedding and towels were very clean and changed daily. Our room was cleaned daily. The buffet style breakfast was basic but ok just for toasts and a coffee/tea and juice after all with lots of delicious restaurants about who wants to stay in a hotel for breakfast. All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. The air conditioning was noisy but hey if was free and unlimited as was the Wi-fi. Like i said yes its a shame that such a building is in a time warp but this is reflected in the price so if you want something modern and swanky this is not the place for you. The pool area was a nice extra as after a busy day sightseeing it was nice to catch some sun and have a dip. Whatever time of the day we went to the pool we always managed to get sunbeds.

Room Tip: we had rooms 99 and 100 and found them to be ample

I stayed at the Bristol Hotel for a week at the end of January this year. I was visiting on a study trip with my university. Upon arrival, I was taken aback by the tiredness of the building - the carpet and furniture were worn and old, and there did not seem to be a consistent theme of decor throughout the hotel. There were sofas and statues which appeared rather random. I found the staff at reception were not particularly helpful or friendly, as they acted somewhat irritated when we approached them with a query or to collect our keys (which we had to hand in every time we left the building). I was in a room for two with twin beds, which were hard with one very flat pillow. The room overlooked a building site at the back of the hotel. At about 9pm every night work seemed to begin at this site, as we could hear the loud usage of machines etc. The bathroom was very basic with harsh lighting and the toilet's flush was constantly temperamental. We were provided with a fridge (almost cold) and a television, but just one plug socket between the two of us, which caused us inconvenience.

Each morning we went to the breakfast buffet - this consisted of toast, hot drinks from a machine, cereals with milk (not cold) and yoghurts (not cold). As the week went on, we went out for breakfast in cafes which were definitely more reliable!

I did not enjoy my stay at the Bristol Hotel, although the central location was useful.

Room Tip: Ask for a front facing room!

Had a four night stay in The Bristol Hotel. Everyone on reception was really friendly and we were checked into our room within 5 minutes. We were in Room 115 which overlooked the Museum, which is currently having some sort of, what looks like, renovation done, so workmen arrived quite early in the morning, this didn’t really bother me as I’m an early riser anyway. The room was spotless, we had a flat screen telly which picked up a lot of English channels also a little radio over the bed. The fridge was a bit old and tired looking but worked OK. The bathroom was huge with two sinks and a bath with a shower attachment, the water was lovely and warm, although the pressure wasn’t brilliant.
Breakfast was included in the price we had paid but we only ventured down there once. Found the croissants to be tasteless and attempting to make a piece of toast not worth the hassle, as other guests thought it was acceptable to push in front of you and throw their bread on to the toaster before you had a chance to put yours on. There was also yoghurt and cereal on offer. My partner didn’t like the coffee served at breakfast but found the vending machine in reception provided a much nicer one.
The pool area is lovely although the pool was a bit chilly, fine once you were in and swimming but it did take your breath away a bit when you first took the plunge.
Our flight home wasn’t until 7.15pm and checkout for the room is 12midday, however there is a room where you can leave your luggage, the lovely people on reception will ask you what bags you have, provide stickers for each one and a receipt which has to be shown for them to unlock the room to retrieve them so it is very secure.
All in all we had a lovely stay here, I agree with other reviewers that the hotel is dated but if it was updated would cost a lot more, as it is in a perfect location, just seconds away from Main Street. As a base to explore Gibraltar it is perfect.
