Owner description: In 1890, La Rioja Alta SA was founded by five families sharing a common passion for wine. It was the start of an ongoing quest for excellence that their descendants still pursue. Since then we have managed to extract the best from the marriage of our tradition in wine ageing, to state-of-the-art technology in grape fermentation. Our wines (Viña Ardanza, Gran Reserva 904, etc.) have become an international reference for the finest Rioja wines.

We took the English language tour and found it superb. Things were well explained, the bodega is beautiful and well maintained. The wine is fabulous and an incredible bargain. It was an incredible experience. It is highly recommended.

“Great tour and tasting!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2014

This Haro bodega has an interesting array of reservas and gran reservas, the making of which is well explained during the tour. La Rioja Alta has a cooper too, but many other processes have been modernised. For instance, the fermentation takes place elsewhere in stainless steel vats. Barrels are stored at the bodega building where the wooden vats still remain restored but unused. The history of the bodega goes back to 19th century as usual for Station district bodegas, for instance an old light hanging on two parallel copper wires was demonstrated. Some of the tradition had been lost due to the increased volume of the production, but the quality of the wines remains very high.

I booked my tour a couple of weeks beforehand. English tours seemed to be available once a day. The lady presenting the bodega spoke very good English and made the tour a real pleasure - we had good discussion about the winemaking and history of the bodega. The degustation in the end included Albali, Arana and Ardanza and Gran reserva 904 was available for extra fee. An excellent tour for 8 €!

“Best of the tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2014

Eight of us had a six day pre organised wine/gourmet tour of Rioja centered on Haro.We had the full bodega treatment of the comprehensive "visit" at Rioja Alta followed by a stunning luncheon of the very best quality.Selection of mouth watering pintxos to start, traditional vegetable broth, slow roasted lamb and then the traditional pastry and cream dessert. All accompanied by superb wines,A white albarinino,Lagar de Cervera then Gran Reservas 890 and 904 plus Vina Ardanza finished off with a stunning herb flavoured Eau de Vie called Vina Armenteira.Bliss ! Definitely the best by far of the whole Haro experience.

Yes you pay for what you get,but this was totally first class.Very highly recommended as a quality experience but do book up well in advance of your trip. Not to be hurried !

“Great wines”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 December 2013 via mobile

We stopped at Rioja Alta to taste a few wines. We had not reserved a tour, but one of the women serving us at the tasting bar was extremely welcoming and gave us an overview of the winery's history, each of their wines, etc. Some of their wines are sold in the US while others may be hard to find so we bought a few bottles to take back with us. Overall would definitely recommend to stop here even if not taking a tour.

“Best wines and great tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013

We came for a Rioja's Wine Festival, and looking for a visit to La Rioja Alta, because the 904 is one of my wife's favorite wines, and I love the 890. The tour was very informative and with a lot of details about every process to make wines. Congratulations for the ladies who help us with the tour and thanks for the help with the wines we bought at this place (a lot of botlles).
