“Great value and fantastic location”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Billed as a hostal, I thought this place could easily call itself hotel. The rooms are a bit small but comfortable. Reception was friendly, checkin/out was easy and they kept our bags stored for almost 12 hours with no problem. Wifi was free and the signal was good. The room was spare, without a clock or much space but there is a TV and a bidet in the bathroom. There is a nice reeption room and computer room available for guests as well.
The room was perfectly clean and though the view was of the back of another building, the location of the place is fabulous. It's right off Gran Via, Calle Mayor is nearby and we easily walked to the Prado, Plaza de Espana and Atocha. There are plenty of little shops, markets and restaurants nearby and open late in typical Spanish style. Several metro stops are close as well, making a few different lines easily accessible.
It was a nice value for our one night stay. I felt the drawback was what seemed to be paper-thin walls. I could hear a lot from nearby rooms, not only hairdryers but conversations, and everything in the hallway. Sure, the neighborhood might seem dicey because of a few ladies of the night plying their wares outside, but I hardly found it threatening or sketchy; this is likely just a good place for them to be in the mix. They didn't bother myself, my man or our male friend at all, they simply minded their own business.
For such a good price, I'd stay again and I'd recommend it to friends.

Came up to Madrid for the weekend and just wanted somewhere central for an overnight stay and found this little gem! Spotlessly clean, charming staff, rooms a little small but perfectly formed, all at a fantastic price. This is a real winner. And all with the free sideshow out in the street!

Wel, this hostel is located in Madrid downtown, near Gran Vía behind Telefónica Building. It's close to many interesting places. You can walk from there to Cibeles, Plaza de España, El Prado Museum, Atocha station, etc. A little detail that can make you shudder is that there are prostitutes on the same street, but they are minding their own buisness. They do not bother hostel clients as long as you do not bother them, Aside of that inconvinient everything is excellent.

Stayed at Hostal Ballesta for 5days last August. Hostal is conveniently located near gran via. a few minutes walk to gran via and Callao metro station (Hostal is in between this 2 metro station) Hostal was basic but. stayed in a single room, big enough space. Hostal provides free wifi and computer and printer at the lobby which I find very useful especially if you need to print something. Just a note to other travelers, the Hostal is located in a area where prostitutes hang out but they weren't annoying...find them funny at times. The Hostal wa easy enough to find but make sure ask the Hostal for clear directions. If coming from airport whether you arrive at Terminal 1,2 and 3 or from Terminal 4, which are two different stations. Take Line 8 (the pink line) to Nuevos Ministerios and change to Line 10 (the dark blue line) in the direction of Puerta del Sur. At Alonso Martinez change to Line 5 (the green line) in the direction of Casa de Campo. Get off at Callao and take the lift to street level. You should come out at Plaza de Callao, which is on Gran Via. Turn right onto Gran Via crossing at the traffic lights and onto the same side of the street as a café called “Café & Te”. Walk up the street passing the “Zara” shop and turn left immediately after it onto Calle Mesoneros Romanos. At the end of the street turn right and then immediately left onto Calle Ballesta. The hostel is 50 metros up the street on the left.

If you plan on using public transport frequently during your stay in Madrid, I would advise buying a 10 strip ticket. do not forget to buy the airport supplement. Can't exactly how much I paid but I think around 15 euros. Stayed at room 404 next to lift...Maybe asked a room not too close to the lift it could be annoying at times as you could hear every time someone opens and closes it but other than that hotel was really quiet day and night.

Easy to find, just off the Gran Via (take the road next to Pans & Co). Super clean and the room was more than adequate size for two people. Requested a lower floor room with balcony and got exactly what we asked for. Other reviews said the street was noisy. We did not find this to be true AT ALL!!! The only noise came from the cleaner at around 10am moving furniture around in other rooms. Kind of annoying but tolerable. The air-con was a godsend. Staff were all friendly and helpful. WiFi was excellent (and free) and only dropped out occasionally during peak times. We walked everywhere in Madrid due to the great location of the hotel. The roads surrounding it (barco etc) have some lovely tabernas too. Would 100% recommend this hotel as well as stay here again.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights. I'd probably give this a better rating than average except for two things:

1. Two nights were quite noisy, one was due to street noise (Saturday night), the second night we had very noisy neighbours,we could here a lot of intimate stuff (groans e.t.c), the walls must be pretty thin.
2. There was some mould in the bathroom, my wife is very fussy about this.

When we complained about the noise the hotel did offer to move us however I opted to stay in the same room as the alternative room was quite small. My wife would have preferred to move as the alternative room's bathroom didn't have any mould. The last night was very quite and we both slept well.

The location is convenient though the area is a bit seedy, there's quite a few prostitutes hanging around in the street nearby. The staff were polite and helpful and the room itself was clean and quite spacious.

Room Tip: If you stay on a Saturday night ask for a room that doesn't face the street.
