At under 20 Euros per person per night, for a private 4 person room with a private bathroom, Albergue Juvenil was a good hostel in a really great part of Madrid, Malasana. The bathroom was huge with a lot of counterspace and separated toilet area and shower so multiple people could get ready at the same time. Room also had lockers and heat control. Downside was that we had to make our own beds with sheets that didn't fit well and hand soap wasn't provide in the rooms. Wifi, although free and accessible, was pretty spotty at times in the room. Otherwise the complimentary breakfast was pretty good although basic and the hostel offered a lot of nice recreational/living spaces. Overall a good, clean, safe hostel.

Room Tip: Private 4 person room was very affordable and 4th floor was quiet although weird to access, had to take two separate elevators on opposite sides of the building.

Cracking window equals a very cold room in the winter, Free wifi doesn't work on the other floors other than the Third floor, the bed was very hard, the breakfast lady were very mean, I fell I stayed in the prison. only good of these place is people in the front desk were nice.

Room Tip: Don't stay there even it is cheap, you get what you pay for it.

Cracking doors, suffocating dorms, out-of-order lifts, frequent black-outs and stinking corridors cannot be seen through the (above-shown) image Gallery yet strongly odours are readily noticeable upon arrival. Backpackers -you´ve been warned- bring over your own produce: Orange-juice at breakfast will forcefully lead your stomach for a dash visit to WC ("arsenic & old lace" revisited) and I discovered for a nasty surprise laundry-center does not work either... just when I need it most !!.
Only twice as much their regular Fee will get you a decent 4stars room at any Castellana-promenade recognised Inn. Take it from me (a seasoned traveller) you´re going to be much better off anywhere else. Definitely not worht the time and effort spent in searching for affordable accomodation. Deeply disappointed.

We stayed there for three nights. Was very clean. The wifi only works in the common room area but it works great there. The workers were extremely nice. We had a private bath, which was very clean.
It is in a building that houses a kindergarten so we were concerned it would be loud but we really did not hear a thing.

Nights = 4
No. of people = 6 (per dorm room + private bathroom)

I have just returned from a 4 night stay at this modern, clean and spacious youth hostel located in the center of Madrid; having never stayed in a youth hostel before, I was unsure of what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. As in other reviews, I am providing a reflection of the hostel only and not the city of Madrid in general (for which there are separate reviews). I have broken down this review to give an accurate and concise account of what a guest should expect when staying here.

Location = This is, arguably, one of the most important aspects of your stay; pick a hostel too far and you will waste money on travelling costs. This hostel is very well located in the center of Madrid, close to the Tribunal and Nuevos Ministerios stations which have good links to the airport. All the plazas and the Gran Via are within a 15-20 minute walking distance. I would recommend asking for help once arriving at the airport train station, as I found the entire Metro system fares very confusing (despite handling London's underground system!)

Cleanliness = In general, the hostel was very clean and there were high standards of maintenance throughout. The bed linen, bathroom as-well as the mattresses themselves were clean without any issues, as were communal toilets located on second floor; cleanliness was very good overall.

Breakfast (avoid the water as it is from the tap!) = The breakfast was extremely limited in both quality and range; as expected for a rather inexpensive youth hostel. However bread, butter and coffee should provide the necessary fuel to start a day of exploration!

Rooms = All 6 bed rooms come with 3 bunk-beds. The beds themselves were comfortable, but the ladders to get on the upper beds were tiny so expect lots of jumping from the person above you throughout the day!. All rooms have AC which was very powerful, as-well as bed linen and lockers plus free Wi-Fi (coverage was a bit patchy at times). The flooring is tiled, so I would recommend to be extremely careful at night if you are on the top bed, as there is a lack of barrier to prevent someone falling out and injuring themselves. The bathroom was very spacious, with separate (lockable) shower and toilet; shower was very powerful and the perfect complement to a long, sticky and tiring day exploring the city.

Customer service = This was of a very high standard, and the staff were incredibly relaxed; unlike several other places I've stayed in if you don't check out by 11am, nothing happens!. The reception simply brush it off without penalty, and are always incredibly helpful with any questions you may have, but may not always speak English so get someone to translate if needed.

Overall, this an extremely clean, modern and well-located youth hostel, and I had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Despite some obvious flaws, it was very good value for money for as little as 20 Euros a night.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hostel to groups of young people travelling together; it is certainly not recommended for families (due to some constant noise at night) as-well as disabled guests (due to the inaccessibility to lifts/rooms); it is also possible to book a 'mixed' or 'single-sex' dorm room of 4 or 6 people, as appropriate.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't leave the AC on all night as you will freeze!
