Decent hostel - cheap, so I decided I won't complain. The surroundings are nice and it is located very near the centre, which is absolutely fantastic. The staff is friendly and pretty much unintrusive. The beds were okay. The bathroom was tiny and not the best, biggest or cleanest I've seen, but not too bad, either. In other words, for the money that we paid, it was easily bearable and generally quite comfortable. That said, my friend and I literally spent 90% of the day outside and only came back to sleep and whatnot.

I stayed with a friend for 2 nights, we booked a twin room and got a double bed instead...The lady who seemed to be the receptionist and a cleaner and generally the only member of staff was very nice she didn't however speak the word of English (so I'd Google everything before going there and not hoping to get any help at the hostel).

The location is the best thing about this hostel as it's only 15min walk from central Madrid, we walked down every day. And it is pretty easy to get to from the airport (please be careful with your belongings though as my friend had her iPhone stolen on the way to the hostel!)

The room was ok, if a bit noisy. The lady who looks after this place, lives at the hostel with her...dog! who can be heard barking outside your door first thing in the morning! So if you like your sleep probably not the best place to stay.

I'd say bearing in mind how cheap it does the job and if you're only planning to stay a night or 2 it's ok.

When we read the comments we were in doubt because the hostel was described badly. Whoever wrote the reviews was certainly very strict and had no sense of adaptability. In fact the prices were cheap and the room was little but comfortable and clean. It is family buisiness and the owners are kind and heplfull even if they can only speak spanish. There were two little (and very cute) dogs and it could be noisy at night (but this tipends on the other people il the hostel and anyway the owners seemed to be able to handle it).
Finally the hostel is located in a strategic area: there is an underground stop, it is near Gran Via and Puerta del Sol on foot (10 min) and there are a supermarket, a Starbucks and some restaurants (such as 100 montaditos - you have to try it!)
If you come to Madrid to emprove the language, to live the city, visit places and appreciate the particular way of spanish life this is the right place!!

It is located in the part of the city where there is a lot of young people. next to the hotel there is a small grocery shop and pizzeria. At night restaurants throw garbage to the garbage boxes which are located on the street. It makes qute loud noise and please take it into consideration. Because of this reason I would prefer to take next time rooms which lead to the internal garden of the hotel. Free bicikle service is a great idea as the one can easily cicle around the city and spot most interesting places for more detailed visits.

Room Tip: It is located in the part of the city where there is a lot of young people. At night restaurants th...

We've just come back from a 5 night stay at Hostal Santa Barbara and I feel I had to write this review to offset the negative comments I read about the hostel on Trip Advisor. When we read the negative review, we had already booked and we were so shocked that we were about to cancel our booking. Fortunately in the end, we decided to give it a try because of its excellent location. It is not true that the place is where women of the night do their business nor that it is noisy. On the contrary, the guests there were young students who were very courteous and the hostel was quiet at night. In the flats beneath the hostel is a notary's office and a person in charge of security is at the ground floor. The plaza Santa Barbara is a tree-lined square with outdoor cafes and the mobile police were often seen doing their rounds. It is very close to Plaza Colon which is very chic and where many banks can be found. There is no curfew and we were given 3 keys to 3 different doors (including the front door). We could go out whenever we liked without having to ring a bell to go back in. The quad room we were given (we were 3 persons) was spacious and clean and so was the ensuite bathroom. But the best thing about the hostel was that it is just across the road (you just have to cross a zebra crossing) from the exit of the Alonso Martinez line which is such a relief when you return exhausted to your hostel. No breakfast was available but that was no problem with the innumerable cafes beneath and next to the hostel. On the downside, the staff did not speak a word of English (like most Spaniards)but we managed to communicate. The pillows were hard for my liking and the towels were harsh. However these are of little importance compared to the excellent location. We used to walk to Gran Via and Sol and thus economized on transport tickets.I would recommend buying 10 tickets for the price of 9.30euro.It's quite worth it when considering that a single ticket costs 1.50euro and moreover the tickets don't expire. You can use them whenever you like.

This might seem like a normal hostel but it is not. Location is good but it is basically a place where women of the night do their business. It is extremely noisy with comings and goings (of all kinds) all night. I talked to the owners and they simply did not care. Their appearance on web sites looks quite good but its not worth staying here. Actually I dont think that anyone actually pays fr a room here. The place is filthy and unsafe. It should be closed down.
