“Clean, friendly and very well located”
Reviewed 1 January 2013

I have stayed twice at Hostal Sardinero as it is very good value for your money. The location could not be better, only a 15 minute walk to Museo del Prado and Reina Sofia and Atocha train station.
The Hostal is also surrounded by nice bars and restaurants so you are never too far away from a nice tapa!
The staff is very friendly and the place is very clean and comfortable. The beds were really comfy.
The only problem is that as it is located in an popular area fro going out it can be noisy, specially at weekends. And you should know that Spaniards go out until really late (or early in the morning!)

Well located, quiet and very clean. This helpful economical hostel was an excellent choice for visiting Madrid galleries and restaurants. Yes it uphill from atocha station but who would want to stay around the station and it is close to metro. We had a different experience to Angrod Telrunya.

Room Tip: Rear rooms were quiet. Not sure about the street facing one

Me and my wife stayed here for 5 nights. Centrally located, clean, decent, good room size. The owner is helpful and tried to make our stay as good as possible. The room is cleaned everyday. Great value for the money. I do recommend it!

Stayed here one year ago. Had a really nice experience. The location was great, next to a metro. The rooms are very very clean and cheap. The owner was also really nice. I would definitely stay here again!

This is probably one of the last 'Hostals' you would want to visit. The reviews here are either doctored or the reviewers aren't particularly bright.
First, there is the matter of value for money. For 65 euros a night this B&B is terribly inadequate. No toiletries are provided and the rooms are not particularly big. Rooms are also poorly lit and clearly little effort is placed in maintenance. For a double room that I had, there was hardly any space for two people to manouevre. For this price, you would rather go to Hostal Cordoba or Hotel Mediodia, the latter being a proper hotel for just 68 euros.
Next there is the matter of cleanliness. I wonder why people keep claiming it's clean but it is hardly. The toilets have limscale and there isn't even a proper place to hang the bath towel; there is only one towel rack for two full sized bath towels.
You also have, next, the problem of location. Reviewers here claim it is 'central' to all the sights. But they seem to have forgotten that it is quite a distance to the Train / Bus station by which many economy travellers would alight at. The hostal is a 25minute uphill walk from the Atocha station - and this is with the effort of draging one's luggage. Hotel Mediodia is just 5 minutes away (and did I mention that it's only 68 euros?).
There is also the matter of the thin walls. I can hear the going-ons in the rooms beside me and was even told off that my TV volume was 'too loud'??!!??
Finally, we have the matter of the staff. The owner (presumably) is imposing, obnoxious and rude who insists payment not at check-out but at check-in.
In all, there are better places with greater value for money. You wouldn't want this place.

A small hotel, no frills, but very clean with comfortable beds. A very central position, within walking distance of all the sights in the city. We had a wonderful stay. Jimmy the owner was a fantastic host. so welcoming, friendly and helpful, with advice on the best attractions, the best restaurants, bus times for the airport, even teaching a little bit of Spanish! Hasta luego! Thank you for your help.

The Prado was the focus of our visit to Madrid and while we were there we just kept congratulating ourselves for finding a hotel so perfectly situated for walking to the museums as well as to Plazas Mayor and Puerta Del Sol where there is all the Spanish atmosphere and music anyone could hope for. We were coincidentally there during the soccer match between Madrid and Bayern and we enjoyed being able to hear the songs, cheers and groans from the local bars while we watched the game on the TV in our room. This is called a hostal but it had all the comforts of the upscale hotel where we stayed in Barcelona -- just without the glitz and and at half the price. It is a small mom and pop place and although they do not speak a lot of English, Jimmy and Maria were helpful, friendly and attentive -- went the extra mile to make sure we got the room we expected. Unless you are looking for luxury you can't go wrong here.

Room Tip: Tiny bath tub with hand-held shower. Bring a wash cloth, Kleenex and a phrase book.
