Busy tourist spot, about 15 min walk from puerto del sol. We arrived at a weekend when museums were free in so queues were massive. Waited until the following day, arrived just after 4, was no queue going in. €15 entry free with optional guide- no real need as maps in multiple languages past the security area, free. Well laid out, busy but can move freely. Descriptions under paintings also in English. Very impressive paintings and gift shop not too expensive.

Goya, Velasquez and so much more. Days can be spent here. We bought tickets in advance to avoid standing in line. There are crowds, so be patient.

The Prado is one of the finest collections of old art anywhere. Old masters, Renaissance, Impressionists, etc. As well as some older stuff, including Roman statuary, for example. This is classical art at its best. No modern work - for that, go to the Reina Sofia or the Thyssen.

We toured the Prado for a 1/2 day; 2 adults and 2 teenagers and all agreed it was our favorite art museum ever. Get headphones for audio tour- it enhances the experience. 1/2 day is not enough!

Every time I go to Madrid I have to visit. Rainy Monday in Madrid. Perfect for a museum visit.
The surrounding region Retiro Park and Calle Atoche or Gran Via are great for walking tours.
Stop in local bar / cateterias for a drink and tapas or a meal
