My wife and I visited the Royal Palace and would advise you to avoid it at all costs. The queue to go in was huge and understandable but the treatment of everybody by the security and staff ? Rude and completely insensitive. I heard and saw people treated like dirt by staff who seemed to think they were the royals themselves ! A complete waste of money and hugely disappointing atmosphere and experience. Sadly this was the only negative point of an otherwise fabulous visit to Madrid.

We did it as part of a Madrid city tour offered by Pullamentras tours. It was truly an amazing experience to see how Royal people live. Even though this palace is not used by the family to live they still hold functions and gatherings. The paintings, porcelain, marble and tapestries are well worth to see. The cafe is closed and no food is available for purchase. No elevators, only stairs.

The palace gardens are beautiful! Climb the stairs for a great overview look of the palace. We were not able to tour the palace on our visit, but enjoyed walking around! It is in the heart of the city.

What I'd read about the Royal Palace made me expect to see about 50 of its rooms. Unfortunately, there were some areas that were under renovation so it seems we didn't even get to see half of what we expected to see and the visit was over in less than an hour. Of course we were impressed by the rooms that we saw but we also couldn't help feeling, "Is that all?"
