“Awesome Location”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

Hotel Opera is an excellent location if you're looking to explore old Madrid on foot. You are only steps away from the Teatro Real, about 2 minutes from the Royal Palace, and short walk up the hill to the Plaza Mayor. Therefore, it is a great value for the price. Rooms are a bit small, but you won't be camping in the room anyway. The breakfast buffet is plentiful and tasty. Staff are very helpful, arranging an airport transfer for us, laundry, and a few other small things, all with smile. There's also a cafe on the ground floor that is a convenient place to have a coffee or snack while relaxing after a day of sight seeing. You can also use the metro at Plaza Isabel II, again, only a few steps away. If you like the old part of Madrid, this is the place to stay at a great price.

We booked this from a travel agency in Greece taking all risks that action has. Well our choice prooved to be excellent!!! Very nice location since it allows you to visit the city center on foot. Nice and clean rooms, very nice breakfast, helpfull staff. Only minor is that the staff couldnt speak fluent english and we had difficulties to communicate. Other than that, just perfect:)

Stayed 5 nights; the location couldn't be better. In the hub, but quiet; the plaza near the Opera/Royal Palace distinctly elegant. Steps away from the Opera Metro Station, which we used only to/from the Renfe train station & Alsa bus station (so easy; we travel light) to Granada, Seville, Toledo. Taxi to/from airport -flat rate 30 euros- well worth it. All the must -see & do places, tapa bars, etc in central Madrid are within walking. Venture out-don't restrict to the Mercado del San Miguel. As to the hotel, for those lucky ones, the larger family room is superb, the bathroom almost the size of a room; for those who can snag a room with a terrace view, the satisfaction goes up even higher. However: a word of caution: if you are a light sleeper, be sure to study the "Room Tip": stay away from the rooms facing the street where the buses stop, even on the 7th floor, although was not a problem on all the nights (?quiet on weekend?) we were there; it was not a problem w/my family (they rate the room 10++). If you can get the breakfast included, the value is incredible, as it was delicious, filling (includes scrambled eggs, baked tomatoes, Iberian ham, cheeses, many pastries, good coffee). Most of all, I found the staff , esp Danny, to be top notch: welcoming, accommodating, even compared w/US standards, esp compared w/staff from other cities in Spain. Felt they really listened. For that alone, I would not hesitate to return to Hotel Opera. Thank you everyone!

Hotel is placed opposite the Madrid Opera, neat Cinema and easy walk to food squares, Cathedral and Royal Palace. Good bed in compact room showing age. A vibrant location with nice amenities and cafe. A hefty walk from Sol Metro station though. Recommend Tapas for two at nearby La Traviata.

Just a few steps from the Madrid Opera House, this modern hotel was lovely and a good value. It easy a short walk to the Royal Palace and Cathedral, the Puerto del Sol hub and the Plaza Major.
Shops and restaurants abound. The Opera metro stop is right there. We ate lunch two days at the Mercado del San Miguel -- a five minute walk -- which has a grand assortment of tapas, paellas, olive stuffed with all kinds of delights, sweets, beer and wine, and much more. It is very clean and inviting. Pick and choose what you want to eat, then grab a seat at the shared tables in the center. There is a restaurant and a show at the Hotel Opera, but we did not see the show or eat there. However, the staff was happy to uncork wine we bought and enjoyed on a private terrace overlooking Madrid.

Room Tip: We followed Rick Steve's suggestion of an upper floor room to be quieter. As luck would have it...

We could not have hoped for a better hotel. A great position - all the sights were walkable but there was also a metro station across the square. The hotel was quiet, very clean and our room had a huge very comfortable bed, quiet but effective air conditioning and efficient plumbing. The staff were very welcoming. We had a room on the 8th floor with a terrace which was lovely to sit out on in the afternoons. We felt it was well worth the extra money and indeed the price compared well with the hotel we stayed in in Seville. We did not take breakfast in the hotel, just grabbed coffee, pastry and orange juice in the local area.
