“Nice, but lacking some basics”
Reviewed 24 July 2014

Pros: Great design, clean, well kept, professionally run. Restaurant is excellent.
Cons: Noise can be loud from the street if you face that way, or from the restaurant till about midnight. The AC works, but the individual thermostats in the rooms are useless--it is one temp for the whole place, controlled at the main desk. It was too cold for me, maybe not for others. The wifi works really well in some areas, but not in all the rooms, and kept going on and off. The shower in my 2nd room had a bad drain, also pitched poorly, so the water didn't drain out (design flaw). Refrigerator was completely warm, not good for keeping your own food.
These minor things add up to a frustrating stay at what should be a 4-star experience.

Dear David,

First of all, thank you very much for writing a review on Tripadvisor.

We hope you enjoyed your days during your visit to Madrid.

As we are in one of the most main streets in our neighborhood, there are lots of bars and restaurants. But they close their business at midnight,so it wouldn't be a problem to sleep well.

We are working to improve our services and facilities such as a/c, drain shower and the minibar temperature as you said.

Regarding to the wifi, we apologize because you couldn't use it rightly during your stay. We fixed it quickly and now is working perfectly.

Thank you very much for your comments because they help us to improve everyday.

We woulk like to see you again soon.

Best Regards,

Posada del León de Oro Team.

My girlfriend and I stayed in the "Golden Lion Inn" for 3 nights in July. For our first visit to Madrid, we planned on staying in a quality hotel and based on the reviews we picked this one – our room was on the first floor and facing the street, Calle Cava Baja. First of all, the location and surroundings are great – it's located in the lively La Latina part of the city which is pulsating, especially after siesta. The hubbub on the street (and inside the hotel's "enotaberna" as well) was quite loud, but the balcony door and thick curtains kept the noise away pretty well, i.e. it wasn't disturbing our sleep. Same goes for the noise from the hotel's bar: it's loud downstairs, but the room we stayed in had a separate door which kept the noise away.

Secondly, our room, "Cava", was very nice and sleek! The pictures on the hotel's website do lie a bit due to the wide-angle lens used, but still, we weren't disappointed or upset about it. The bed and pillows were great – they're made of some sort of memory-foam. I can't remember when I've had such deep sleep. The bathroom was very pleasing as well: modern and high-quality (Grohe rainshower :3 ). Also, those wanting to watch TV during their trips, the large Sony HD TV didn't include an international news channel as promised. Didn't ruin our trip though.

The biggest complaint is that the room air conditioning was somehow broken in so that you couldn't yourself control it but you had to go downstairs to the reception to ask them to turn it on (and off when it got too cold). Quite tiresome. I hope they fix this soon.

The reception and restaurant personnel were, apart from every other Spaniard we met, capable of communicating in English and very amiable! The breakfast was delicious although confusing at first, as you had to separately order your caffe con leche and scrambled eggs with bacon. It was nice though, served tailor-made for you ;) . The restaurant interior with its glass floor was spectacular as well.

All in all, I very much would like to give Posada del León de Oro full 5/5, but due to the AC issue, I'm forced to present it with 4/5. DO NOTICE HOWEVER that this place fulfilled our expectations, was very pretty and tidy, had very good service, and a nice bar and restaurant. Definitely a would-visit-again hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms facing cava baja are (supposedly) noisier than others, but good sound-insulation keeps the...

A cute small hotel. Great location. We stayed in the Cava room which was clean and nicely decorated. The bed was comfortable and the view/balcony to the Cava Baja street was nice. The hotel was a bit noisy in the evening because of the bar downstairs but that was expected. The air conditioning device in the room didn't work and the A/C had to be controlled from the reception which was a little inconvenient. The wi-fi signal was very bad so if you have work to do don't count on it! If I was going back to Madrid I would still probably stay here.

My husband and I were fortunate to have this hotel recommended to us by a Madrilena colleague. We normally go for a Hilton, Hyatt, Radisson etc for a city break after an unfortunate "boutique" hotel experience in Amsterdam some years ago! However, we are now converts to 'the best things come in small packages' if the Posada del Leon de Oro is anything to go by. The staff were all professional but friendly and nothing too much trouble. Great room, larger than many we have stayed in recently in the larger chain hotels, with all mod cons (v good air/con). Bed extremely comfortable too. The icing on the cake was the central location for sightseeing. Less than 5 minutes' stroll to the centre of Plaza Mayor. Do not hesitate to book up and enjoy this beautiful city.

We stayed here for four nights and were very happy with the friendly service, room and location. We arrived well before the posted check in time so there were no rooms available yet. The desk clerk let us leave our bags secured with him and we went off to have breakfast and explore the Sunday flea market, El Rastro. Our room was large and airy and the bed was really quite comfortable. We enjoyed the location of the hotel and its proximity to several excellent tapas bars and restaurants. We were traveling with friends and it was nice to just hang out at the hotel's wine bar (which has a cool glass floor showing old structures beneath the building) after a long day of sightseeing. We would stay there again and highly recommend it to others.

The hotel is a very nice boutique hotel centrally located near the Plaza Major.
There is no parking close by and you have to use a public garage three blocks away. This is fine if you are fore warned.
We checked in very late on a Friday night and found the desk clerk to be somewhat rude.
Other than that, It is a good place to stay in the middle of a very busy part of Madrid.

Room Tip: we stayed in a family room that was fine for a family of four but not for two couples. The room ove...
