“Great Madrid Location”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

I recently stayed at the Westin Madrid and enjoyed the history of the hotel, and the excellent location. You can walk straight into the beautiful Botanic Gardens, or round the corner to the old town, with lots of bars and restuarants.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view over the fountain and across to the gardens

I was happy that I was spot on with this hotel choice when the locals admit this hotel is the jewel of the city. The rooms were very spacious with views of the city life boasting with life at night. The location is perfect, close enough to walk to Plaza mayor and plaza de sol but far enough from the hustle and bustle. However, the palace was very close to the Prado Museum, one of the finest museums in Europe, which is excellent. The rooms have very large bathrooms and the lobby interior makes you feel like royalty. If you want to experience culture, go down to the restaurant and try tapas.

The Westin Palace occupies a different world. The hotel was built in 1910, and is a true “Grand Hotel” in the old European tradition, well updated in matters that are important, left as the original where appropriate. Our room on the second floor overlooked a side street, which was probably better than overlooking the square where a Gay Pride celebration was continuing. The room was good sized with beautiful crown molding and very attractive wallpaper. The closet was large enough, but drawer space a tad short. The bathroom was a gem, with a tub shower, a separate toilet room, double sinks and marble everywhere. There was a grand full length mirror just outside it. The room had a beautiful desk, and the bed was very comfortable. There was complimentary bottled water.
The dining room is a wonder all its own. It sits beneath a large domed ceiling set with stained glass panels, and has a massive crystal chandelier. It dates back to the original construction. The rest of the hotel is truly high class with wide corridors, excellent carpeting, dark wood and real hall lamps everywhere. One minor problem concerned the elevators. They are small and slow, but could not have been updated without major engineering changes, so we walked down to the lobby. The service was very friendly and efficient, with language never being a problem. The hotel is about as centrally located as you can find in Madrid. For example, it is just across the street from the Prado Museum, and within easy walking distance of two other major museums.
We were there as part of a cruise, and this meant that the otherwise expensive buffet breakast was included. This was a real treat. We can best describe it as being virtually equal to the best cruise ship breakfast buffet, and when we say that this includes the Crystal cruise line, you know we are talking five star all the way.
This is a truly great hotel, and even if you pay rack rates, you are getting your money's worth.

We recently stayed with our family, and could not have been more pleased. We needed connecting rooms, and they were amazing. We felt like we were in our own apartment. The staff was incredible. The concierge was spot on with the restaurants we were looking for, and took care of all of our needs. The breakfast is a must...again the staff is amazing. We were so pleased and cannot wait to go back!

Room Tip: We had connecting rooms on the 5th floor facing out....they were perfect.

This is a classic hotel in Madrid that never disappoints. It is pricey but very elegant. You think you are back to the 1800's but with modern facilities. The staff means to help you and make you feel at home. It is centrally located and can walk from there to many destinations. It is easy to walk to Atocha Train Station and have a short ride to Toledo (40 minutes) in a fast train and return to Madrid the same day. Walking through old Madrid is easy to do from this hotel, not to mention that El Prado is just a block away. I do think the prices for a drink at the classic bar are a bit expensive but certainly very good, though they served no snack with the drinks!

Room Tip: Stay away from the Neptune Fountain, it can be noisy. You can look at the fountain from the sidewalk...

Sometimes, after two weeks in Europe, you want a hotel that feels like home. On the other hand, you want to have one more night to experience local charm. The Westin Palace ticks both boxes. The room was fantastic and large, with all the Westin amenities, including that oh-so-familiar green tea lotion and washcloths - a rare find even in a 5 star hotel in Europe. I used Starwood Cash & Points so paid only $100 for the room, and was pleasantly surprised to find myself on the top floor, the Starwood Preferred Guest floor. The hotel has abundant old world charm, and I was even offered free room service coffee with warm milk after my wake-up call (which I'll take over a Starbucks in Europe any day). For an expensive hotel, the bar was very reasonable - I ended up having a few tapas and some wine for a fairly small price. And you can't beat the location - just a stone's throw from the major museums, and there are some very nice and very cheap tapas bars within a few blocks.

Only stayed the one night in July but absolutely no complaints. Booked an Executive Room which had all the usual amenities other than tea/coffee making facilities. Starbucks on the ground floor and a whole range of bars and restaurants within a short walk. Five minutes away from the Prado and ten minutes to the Botanical Gardens. Ideal for a city break or a business trip, would certainly return.
