The Westin Palace Madrid

We recently had an excellent stay at the Westin Palace for 5 nights. When we arrived we were greeted by Alberto at the front desk. It was immediately apparent that the staff at this hotel is well trained and knows what they are doing. We were upgraded to a starwood preferred room and Alberto made sure that our two year old was included as part of our hotel/breakfast rate. This is where I believe they go the extra mile as far as service is concerned. You don't have to ask, they already know what you're thinking. The hotel is beautiful. I looked at some of the pictures of the hotel prior to arrival and was concerned that this hotel would be a little too old and stuffy but I was wrong. The hotel is classic and modern. When you enter the lobby, there is a staircase that leads you to the elevators. I was concerned about taking the stroller up and down but not to worry, the staff was ready to help as soon as they saw me coming. Our room was on the 6th floor facing the back of the hotel because we requested a quiet room. The room as very quiet and the curtains completely black out the light. Now, let's talk about the bed, it was really, really comfortable as were the pillows. We brought our own todler bed for our son and housekeeping even made his bed everyday. This hotel is very accomodating to guest with young children. The hotel restaurant has high chairs and they brought hot water to our room when asked (free of charge of course). After snoozing and freshing up we headed out. The hotel location could not be better. You are across from the Prado and Thyssen, a 10 minute walk to the Reina Sofia and right in the middle of a neighborhood known for its old school tapas bars. Everything is within walking distance from the hotel, even Atocha Station (15 minutes). So, if you have to pay a little more to stay here, it's well worth it since you'll save yourself a bunch of cab fares. Overall, I would have to say this was our best hotel experience while in Spain for two weeks. The hotel stay added to our good impression of Madrid. We'll be back!

I had been to the lounge of the Westin Madrid a few years ago with a friend; she and I shared a bottle of great Spanish verdejo, nibbled some olives and almonds, and vowed to return to stay. I had the pleasure of staying for a few nights on route to Valencia and plan to use this info to make my friend envious.

The Westin is beautiful, breathtaking in fact. The domed glass lounge is worth the visit alone - bright, elegant, and surprisingly intimate - a hotel lounge in the old style. The rooms are spacious and clean - the Westin king sized sleeper is wonderful as is the Westin heavenly bath – one of the best hotel showers I’ve experienced. Be wary if you are tired for you won't want to leave your room. To get some energy, use the Westin workout room; it too is spacious and clean and has above average equipment.

Be sure to explore the area around the hotel - the Prado is close by as are numerous other attractions. Because the hotel is centrally located, it's a hike to the airport and there is a supplemental charge if you take a cab. The weather is wonderful - too hot if any complaint could be found. The Westin would be perfect if a pool were available.

Be sure to visit the Loewe store in the hotel - it is up a short flight of stairs to the left once you enter the lobby. Many Canadians won't know this brand, but they should - great leather goods and accessories. Loewe is a brand from Madrid and a piece or two from the store will help you remember your stay.

This is not a typical tourist hotel - be sure to have some extra euros saved for your stay. Sure, it's expensive, but it's well worth it.

The granny smith apples - a signature of the Westin brand - were incredible.

Our second stay this year was almost as good as our first back in May. The room was almost as nice and this time we enjoyed a meal and a drink in the bar. The bar is expensive but the snacks were wonderful and it is a wonderful place to lounge after being out and about in the heat. As has been noted by others the location can't be beat and the rooms are large and well appointed with bathrooms one would expect in a five star hotel. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, if expensive, and I once again had the gym on the top floor almost to myself on both occasions i felt the urge to work off a meal.

My husband and I spent two nights at the Westin Palace in April. We arrived in Spain jetlagged and tired. We were able to check in right away and were happy with the quality of the hotel and our room. It was very clean and comfortable, as expected. We booked the room using Starwood points, and the Starwood level had a table with tea and apples set up for guests. Breakfast was not included, so we didn't eat (or have drinks) at the hotel.

The location of the hotel is excellent, within walking distance of the Prado and the train station and is also walkable to Sol and the Plaza Santa Ana, though we did take the train a couple of times.

The only hiccup during our stay involved transportation from the airport. I had called the hotel inquiring if they had a shuttle service from the airport. The gentleman I spoke with said they did, and he took our flight info. When we arrived at the airport, a private car picked us up. We were surprised, but the driver did not charge us. It was only when we checked out of the hotel that we were charged 100 Euros(!) The concierge had never mentioned the charge, and we were under the impression that it would be a complimentary shuttle, not a private car. Needless to say, it put a damper on our experience.

Our stay was otherwise enjoyable (short but sweet) and made our transition into Spain very pleasant.

If you are interested in spending over $50 for a hamburger and $30 to have wireless internet on one computer for 24h, this is the place for you. You do get free shoe shine cloths though! The service is less than I have received in many less expensive hotels.

Beautiful hotel, great position near the three major galleries. Large rooms, comfy beds, delux bathrooms. All of the staff were marvellous. Late check-out arranged without a fault. As a 5 star hotel it cant be faulted. As a place to stay whilst on holiday it can. The ludicrously high cost of internet access, minibar, bar drinks and food meant that although I could afford them I felt disinclined to use them and thus enjoyed the hotel less. If someone is staying at the Westin on holiday, I can recommend the Faborit restaurant chain across the street (San Jeronimo) - sandwiches, salads, freshly squeezed juice and coffee, all inexpensive AND free wireless internet access! Around the corner an opposite the Prado - the VIP store for drinks and snacks. A 3-4 minute walk along the road behind the hotel (Duque de Medinaceli) are a number of atmospheric bars and restaurants.

Our few night stay was nothing short of heavenly. With their famous heavenly beds I never slept better. The breakfast was wonderful, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, the concierge made great restaurant recommendations and reservations for us. I would recommend this hotel without a doubt.
