“Ideal location, good service, but the place is a bit tired”
Reviewed 14 February 2010

I agree with many other reviewers that this special, historic and grand hotel could use a little facelift (the carpets!). Nevertheless our room was very spacious and clean. The service is generally quite good but was a bit spotty at the Garden Terrace. The location is ideal – just behind the Prado. One last thing – at these prices one should not charge for WiFi.

We stayed for 3 nights last week to celebrate a friends 50th birthday. I booked the special offer rate several months in advance, so got a really good deal for room only.
We were situated on the first floor looking towards the courtyard.
Part of our bedroom window was 'obstructed' by the way the courtyard is designed, so there was no particular view. If we had paid full rate for the room, I would probably have asked to be moved. As it was, it did not impact upon our stay.
The room was large, clean and well serviced, and will benefit from refurbishment in due course as others have mentioned. We received complimentary water, cake and fruit each day.
We found the service to be good. I had booked a couple of restaurants in advance, and we were given excellent tables when we attended. No problems with taxi's, although it is obviously a quite time of year in Madrid for tourists.
Prices in the hotel are high, so watch out. Overall a very enjoyable stay in a classic hotel.
If youre eating out La Capilla de la Bolsa is an absolute must ! We had a fantastic evening.

I celebrated my wedding there. And the arrangements, customer focus, service, quality of food, attention, details... were so extremely well managed that you could not believe it.
The menus are excepcional.

Stayed in the Ritz for the New Year, overall the stay was good but it leaves a lot to be desired from a Hotel of this class.
The attention to service was good but not excellent, several times we had to walk to the corner because they were unable to get us a taxi. Also on the day we left, we call several times to get help with the baggage but no one arrived. The concierge and check in staff were OK, but nothing more than that.
The rooms are VERY dated, there condition are good, but how many coats of paint can you put on a door before you need to changed it? The carpets, beds and bathrooms show their age. I need to point out that the room was HUGE y European standards.
I will stay here again but only once it has been remolded.

Spent five nights here in a room overlooking the Prado. Because you can enter the Prado for free every evening from 6-8, staying here was like having the Prado in your backyard with free acess. There are no international 5 star chains and the Ritz while needing some updating , especially the carpets, gave impeccable service. We used a five night special and they treated us extremely well. They provided complimentary champagne, substituted beautiful cookies for fruit at our request, and generally were very accomodating .The carpets were dated in my room from 1986, woven into a corner. They appear to be a similar pattern to the ones in the Palace. The room itself was very attractive and the bathroom large and convenient. Be aware , the internet is not free and expensive...I am told they are refurbishing for their 100th anniversay in 2011, but as yet only three rooms are done. I think if you call ahead and say you are concerned about the conditions they will do their best to find you a beautiful room. They did for us.

I stayed there last week for a night with my partner. We were given a room in the third floor with views over the courtyard but said courtyard is green, ample and very quiet and we were on a business trip so it wasn't a big deal to us.. We are quite young (late 20s) and found the almighty Ritz to be an opulent, beautiful grand hotel. We had concerns as we had been told stories of snobby staff (this must be the ultimate sin the service industry in my opinion, but then Spain is not a service-orientated country) and a garish deco in need of an update but we found its decadence and opulence very uplifting and somehow entertaining. Good Points; Great location for a visit to Madrid's most accomplished museums and other leisure activities, great service, complimentary cakes and bottled water in the room, spacious wardrobes and baths, lush heavy robes and good beds. Bad Points: Lacked some toiletries I'd expected to find such as a toothbrush or a shaving kit and the body bream had noticeably been used and most annoyingly the room service kept attempting to clean the room even though my partner, who had left early to work, had indicated that I would be sleeping in the room. In one occasion they didn't even knock on the door before entering which I found really odd. They did profusely apologized for this in reception and it could have helped to hang the 'do not disturb' sign so it's all forgiven and I would most definitely go back anytime. I'll have to add that the garden's terrace is nothing special (Dear management: underground smelly toilets are a no-no) and the prices are insultingly high in relation to the quality of the service/food given.

We stayed at the Ritz our first two nights in Spain. The location by the Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza is perfect, and it is within comfortable walking distance of central Madrid. The service was outstanding (though not great in the otherwise lovely garden bar), especially for Spain, which is not a service-oriented country. The concierges were about as good as any we have dealt with in Europe (except for Paris). Our room was clean, quiet, and comfortable, with a lovely view over the Plaza de la Lealtad. Our only cavil is that the hotel could stand to be freshened up. Some furnishings in the room and in the public spaces were a little tired. Overall, this was an elegant hotel that we would gladly stay at again, most especially because of the location and service.
