Great hotel, great location (just beside Prado Museum), great food, but service could be better. people dont know your name, sometimes take too long to get to you and arent that helpful. We expected more, as long as it is a Ritz and you are paying more than U$ 400 a night. If you must choose a 5 star hotel, prefer a Four Season..

I stayed for Valentines weekend and a special anniversary, for two nights. I paid a room only rate which was for a standard, no view room. We were ipgarded to a room with a fantastic view looking out over the fron tof the hotel, by the reception staff. The room was lovely, huge by European standards, with a lrage bathroom and seperate loo and shower. It was a little shabby but for me this only added to the charm. The staff are all wonderful, from doorman to conceierge. Everyone greets you all day in this hotel. The public areas were gorgeous, grand, and the people watching was brilliant - the clientele is an older, genteel group with a lot of money so great fun to watch!

The only thing I would say is the extras in this hotel are hideously expensive - two coffees on room service 30 euros! Breakfast for two in the dining room - 80 Euros! So make sure you get a breakfast inclusive rate.

I really enjoyed our stay. My partner did find the hotel a little formal, but then thats what the Ritz is. If you want a casual relaxed atmosphere its not for you, but if you want old world charm and grandeur - definately go.

I agree with many other reviewers that this special, historic and grand hotel could use a little facelift (the carpets!). Nevertheless our room was very spacious and clean. The service is generally quite good but was a bit spotty at the Garden Terrace. The location is ideal – just behind the Prado. One last thing – at these prices one should not charge for WiFi.

We stayed for 3 nights last week to celebrate a friends 50th birthday. I booked the special offer rate several months in advance, so got a really good deal for room only.
We were situated on the first floor looking towards the courtyard.
Part of our bedroom window was 'obstructed' by the way the courtyard is designed, so there was no particular view. If we had paid full rate for the room, I would probably have asked to be moved. As it was, it did not impact upon our stay.
The room was large, clean and well serviced, and will benefit from refurbishment in due course as others have mentioned. We received complimentary water, cake and fruit each day.
We found the service to be good. I had booked a couple of restaurants in advance, and we were given excellent tables when we attended. No problems with taxi's, although it is obviously a quite time of year in Madrid for tourists.
Prices in the hotel are high, so watch out. Overall a very enjoyable stay in a classic hotel.
If youre eating out La Capilla de la Bolsa is an absolute must ! We had a fantastic evening.
