“A Green Sanctuary in the Center of the City”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

We visited during one of the hottest Summer days, and it was worth visiting. The place is full of green spaces a lot of shady Pine trees. It is a destination with a lot of lively young people. Ample eating options and a lot of kiosks that sell ice cream and water. This place is ideal to visit with kids.

“Among the great garden parks in the world”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

In this world there are those of us who love gardens, and there are those who just walk through or past them

Retiro is a magnificent public park / garden. Free of charge, it was created as a private getaway for the royals. on a hot day in the summer of Madrid, it is an oasis

There are formal allees bordered with statuary honoring the Royals; there are woodland paths and benches where one can simply relax in the shade. The sunken formal garden, reseplendant in summer with beds of impatiens, feature a wide array of ornament topiaried cypresses. The rose gardens bring tears to a gardener's eye with an incredible array of varietals.

The 'lake' seems more an overgrown fountain, but many rent little boats and glide around its surface. The crystal palace houses delicate plants.

i guess i'd say that most importantly while many tourists go there, it's not a tourist site ... it's a space that Madrilenos consider their own ... a respite from the heat, a place to walk dogs, play with children; jog and bicyle... go, wander, and wish that more US cities created such soothing spots!

“Beautiful.”
Reviewed 18 July 2014 via mobile

My wife and I made regular visits to this wonderful park in Madrid due to the fact that we are runners. If you are also blighted by this hobby, I would urge you to sample this park where you will be joined by a healthy number of people doing the same particularly in the mornings. The park is beautifully maintained and looks superb. There is a boating lake as well as plenty of places to sit and pass the time. Likewise, if you fancy an ice cream or a drink there are options available. Well worth a look without doubt.
