Owner description: The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum offers visitors an overview of art from the 13th century to the late 20th century. In the nearly one thousand works on display, visitors can contemplate the major periods and pictorial schools of western art such as the Renaissance, Mannerism, the Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism and the art of the 19th and 20th centuries up to Pop Art. The museum also features works from some movements not represented in state-owned collections, such as Impressionism, Fauvism, German Expressionism and the experimental avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. In addition, it boasts an important collection of 19th-century American painting not found in any other European museum institutions.

Thanks to the temporary Pop Art exhibit (Warhols, Leichtensteins and alikes), our stop over was definitley worth it. Otherwise, the permanent collection is rich, but not very well arranged, neither chronologically nor categorically. You keep moving back and forth between medieval, classical, and even modern.
Also, a large number of French impressionist paintings were on loan to other exhibits or museums, and small prints were offered as substitute. A museum should not allow such high percentage of its paintings in a particular category to move out all at once, as this could be considered as a disgrace to its own visitors.
A note: museum gift shop is the best and most resonablu priced of the 3 major art museums in Madrid.

This is a really amazing collection in an easy to navigate central museum with great lighting and galleries of the perfect size to showcase the amazing art. Don't miss this fantastic museum. Free visiting hours are a great plus too. Check their website for details.

There is some amazing art here from a few different eras and styles. It is small and easy to walk around in a few hours. We went WITH A SIX YEAR OLD BOY, and he had fun as it is a fairly open gallery.
My only real complaint is that almost every painting is under glass. Taking photos of art under glass is tough. Plus, the glass wreaks havoc on the view of the texture of each painting. I understand completely why they do it--and yes, I felt better every time my 6 year old boy got too close. Still, seeing the art without the glass is clearly better.
