We recently spent four nights at the Hostal Patria. The location was amazing, just one block from the Puerta del Sol plaza. Metro access as very easy, just a short walk from the hotel. Access to the hotel was also very convenient. It was a secure building, but they give you a key to the front door, so you don't have to buzz in for access. One note in this regard: they will tell you not to arrive before 10 am. This is not just a suggestion. They turn the doorbell off so you can't buzz up before then.
The rooms are a touch small, but that's to be expected for the middle of a city. The room as also very clean and well tended during our stay. The service was also very good, and the host was very friendly. I can't comment on how much English he spoke, as my boyfriend is fluent in Spanish, but he seemed to sprak a bit. Overall, it was a very good experience and I would recommend it to anyone loiking for budget-friendly accommodations in Madrid.
