“Hotel Moderno and Chello the perfect hostess”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2014

For a first time traveller to Madrid, I really loved Hotel Moderno. It is in the center of Puerto del Sol and accessible to anything and everything. The best part of the hotel was the Chello :-) in the front desk. She was really helpful all the time and made sure everyone in our party of 8 were satisfied with our rooms and the service. The hotel rates were also very reasonable considering the location. I would surely recommend this to anyone visiting Madrid and I myself look forward to staying there again.

Room Tip: some rooms face the noisy street, so you can choose a room which faces a quieter part of the locatio...

Location, location, location. Safe. Seconds from Puerta del Sol. Minutes walking to Plaza Mayor, El Corte Ingles where there is a lower level supermarket, 15 minutes walking from the Royal Palace, Retiro Park- or a brief subway trip to all including Atocha, El Prado, etc.

A European hotel and managed very well. Friendly and accomodating.

Wi-Fi is sketchy in most hotels when you use an American OS/provider. Fugitabotit. Hang it up and go experience life. Go see Madrid.

The hotel was right bang in Puerta Del Sol so accessible to the main attractions, eateries etc. It was OK - I mean it was clean and the décor wasn't that bad. The bathroom needs some updates: shower 'door' was hard to close as it snapped back continuously and it had a hole in it. Reception were a bit off standish - not the most helpful. The biggest flaw of the room (as others complained of in previous posts) was the intense heat in the room. This was in March, no heat on and with windows open (overlooking a courtyard). This is why I do not think I would return. The heat was too intense.

I stayed at Hotel Moderno last summer during my stay in Madrid and it was great! It suited my purpose perfectly - to tour the city and have a place to sleep at night where I felt safe. I was travelling solo, so location and safety were important. The hotel is very basic and the room is small, but they are clean. The staff is helpful and accommodating. The location was at Puerta del Sol, which is the hub of Madrid so to speak, so be prepared for some noise, but not enough to bother. The rail station is located a few steps away as well as La Mallorquina bakery :)
Would definitely stay again.

Hard to find positives on this one beyond solid location on Puerta Del Sol at an acceptable price and friendly staff at reception. When they are there. If the staff is one person and needs to leave the desk momentarily they literally lock you in the hotel until they return.

WiFi almost non existent and usually completely unavailable in the room. Some give up but one fellow seemed to succeed by dragging a chair near the stairwell.

Beds are tiny. Avoid if you are over 6 feet tall.

Many rooms overlook a smelly atrium where only garbage and hotel maintenance items are kept. This happens on all floors.

Buffet is advertised without a price making it appear included. It is not included and easily double in price to any cafe close to hotel. Having said that the buffet was adequate. However ours was dominated by a manager who dropped by to say hello and then we could not get him to leave.

They dart in your room to grab the towels even if it is hours before they clean it. If they clean it! Not always!

Room Tip: Low and not facing atrium

Perfect lively location just off the Puerta del Sol. Steps from Metro, shops, museums, restaurants and street activities. Quiet room.
Discomforts: small room, short bed, no view, rough towels, expensive breakfast 10e per person.
All in all good value.

Room Tip: Not sure if there are balcony rooms available, but the room may be noisier.

Terrific location and great value for money. The room and ensuite were perfectly adequate. Staff were professional and helpful. Balcony in bedroom a bonus. Would stay here again.
The rooms were clean and had an old world feel. Metro station at front door and about thirty minutes to the airport
