“Perfect Location – almost ticked all the boxes!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 November 2011

This hotel is in a perfect location for Madrid sightseeing and close to the many restaurants and tapas bars of Plaza de Santa Ana. It had a complete renovation just over 6 months ago so the interior has a very fresh and modern appearance. The room we had wasn’t overly large but was well set out, the bed was extremely comfortable and the shower powerful. It overlooked the inner courtyard so was very quiet. The only problem was that the room was so dark, lit by a series of little spot lights that where impossible to apply my make-up under. There was a sort of dressing table, but the TV was positioned over this, the mirror was alongside the bed so to enable me to style my hair I had to unplug one of the valued bedside lights so I could plug in my straighteners and sit on the floor to style. Apart from this I would recommend this hotel.
All the staff we spoke to were extremely friendly and helpful. On arrival the receptionist gave us a map and highlighted places that he thought would be of interest. We arrived at 10 pm and asked if he could recommend a place to eat, the tapas bar/restaurant was perfect for first night fuelling –in fact we returned there again another night.
We didn’t have breakfast in the hotel as it seemed expensive; we didn’t need to as there was a fantastic bakery/café over the road that offered a breakfast deal of coffee, juice and a large pastry for €3.25, but other choices were endless and are making me hungry thinking about it now!
Another plus for this hotel is that, if possible, they offer a late room checkout; until 3pm for €30 and until 6pm for €40 – as our return flight was at 9.50pm we took advantage of this.

A modern hotel behind an old fascade. Room are modern, clean and spacious, but characterless. Central place within easy reach of Plaza Major and Sol. Free WiFi is a real plus.
Breakfast pricey especially as there is a patissarie directly opposite. Other meals limited to the bar area and are mediocre.

The Hotel Catalonia Plaza Mayor seems to have been newly refurbished and is both stylish and comfortable.
The hotel is well located relative to Atocha RENFE and even closer to the nearest metro station. There are plenty of places to eat just around the corner and Plaza Mayor is not too far either.
What we liked best about the hotel was the pleasant nature of the front office staff. We interacted frequently with Xavier and Rosa during our 5-day stay and found both to be very fluent in English and cheerfully helpful. The bell-boys were more active and available than in any of the five hotels we used on this trip.
The modern decor of the room is pleasing though the design of the bathroom door (not fully fitting / sealing at the edges) might not please everyone. The bedroom and bathroom fittings were of a uniformly high standard. There were, however, no facilities for making tea or coffee in the room.
A very pleasant hotel which we would recommend highly.

Room Tip: Go for one of the higher floors.

The location is superb. Everything is within a short walking distance.
There's a nice bakery just across the street so you may want to skip the pricey hotel breakfast in favor of their much better deal.
Our room was large and modern.
Too bad that there was no bath tub (only a shower) and that the bathroom door doesn't actually close and give you privecy.

I stayed here with a friend for 3 nights in late September and we were both pleasantly surprised and pleased with it. First of all it's in the best location - near Plaza Mayor, Santa Ana, Puerta del Sol, so everything was within less than 10 minutes walking distance and no time or money was wasted. Museums, restaurants, bars, shopping are all easily accessible from the hotel as is the metro which was about a block or two away. Great cafes nearby including a fantastic pastry shop directly across from the hotel. Rooms were spotless, spacious, bright and clean with nice modern touch as were the bathrooms. We were given a smokers room as there were no nonsmoking rooms available but you wouldn't have known it walking in to our room as the hotel is fairly new. Staff was super nice, accommodating and helpful as we regularly inquired about directions, restaurants, sites, etc. Rooms had wifi but no business center or computer access at the hotel but they did direct me to a great internet cafe 2 blocks away. Highly recommend and would definitely stay there again.

Pros:

Fantastic rooms, almost 5 star - spacious and furnished and designed in a modern and tasteful way. Comfortable beds and big flatscreen TV. Good quality of towels. Great location - 7-8 min walk to Puerta del Sol/Plaza Mayor/Plaza Santa Ana and 10 min to Atocha railway station. The metro is just one minutes walk away. Free Wifi.

Cons:

Service is slow and inexperienced. Reception is constantly understaffed. It took 15-20 minutes to check-in. Don´t except much help either if you ask anything else that super simple questions. Breakfast is expensive. Try the café in front of the hotel for a much better deal. Water from the shower in the room was either too hot or too cold. Hardly any facilities - basically, in this hotel you sleep and nothing else.

Dear guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I would like to extend our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience you encountered here at our hotel.

We trully regret the check in time, maybe there was too many people in the front desk, but we are sure that the front desk staff tried to help you as soon as they could

We would like to thank you once again and hope that in your next visit we can exceed all your expectations.
Kind regards.
