“Not Free Wifi”
Reviewed 14 January 2014 via mobile

What a shocker. Spoke to a very rude and hostel Receptionist( Anna). Just because their website says wifi in room & public area does not mean its free. But on their website it did not include the price as did for car park. If they are going to charge for wifi, why not state it on their website as they did with parking?

Hotel is NOT 4 star. Rather basic, it's a 3 star at best.

We stayed here two nights at the start of our tour of several cities in Spain, and one other night before taking the train to Barcelona. The hotel is conveniently located near the train station. We also easily walked to many plazas, the Prado, Theyssen, and other attractions. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. My only complaint was that to use the room safe you had to pay! Odd.

We try to eat local and not in touristy spots, and this was a good neighborhood for just that. We found several small establishments and loved it!

The first time I stayed at this Spanish hotel was 1st of July 1972 and I was 19 years old.... The accommodations were very nice then as they are today... I enjoyed the breakfast and dinner there... I try to stay there on my trips to one of the most prettiest capitals of European cities...

We stayed at the Agumar as part of a Globus guided tour, with two nights at the start and a night at the end of the tour. In our stays we found that the hotel was perhaps a bit basic, but worked well for our needs. We travelled as a group of four with two rooms.

We arrived at the hotel on our own for the first two nights and were welcomed by the receptionist Ana, who was efficient and even kind enough to arrange for interconnecting rooms for us with a view of Paseo de la Reina Cristina.

The rooms themselves are a bit dated, but they are clean and functional. Both rooms had twin beds, a desk, some chairs, a flat-screen TV and a large bathroom with all the amenities. There were adequate power points in the room for charging all your devices. Rooms are equipped with a safe, however to use the safe you are required to go downstairs and collect a key from reception. A deposit of €15 is required for the key however this is returned to you at the end of the stay. The TV featured a variety of local and international channels with something for everyone. Noise from the street or surrounds wasn't a problem at all. The air-conditioning worked well. All in all rooms were good, but it would be even better if they would update the decor a little bit.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. It is complimentary for Globus guests and I believe for some types of rooms and packages, but otherwise there might be a small fee. The Wi-Fi was fast and reliable pretty much everywhere within the hotel.

The hotel is in an excellent location, just a few minutes walk from the famous art triangle of the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen. It is also very close to the large Madrid Atocha Station. If you're heading to the museums I would recommend walking, it isn't very far. In the same area are a number of restaurants and cafes, including McDonald's and KFC. If you want to travel further from the hotel, for example to the Plaza Mayor, there is a bus stop outside the hotel or you can take a taxi. A trip to the Plaza Mayor costs around €6-11, depending on direction and traffic. You can get to most places in the city for no more than about €12, and the hotel staff are happy to flag down a taxi for you (taxis are always driving by, it is a fairly busy street). Maps are available at reception.

If you require any snacks, water or drinks, if you turn left as you exit the hotel and walk to the end of the block there is a small convenience store with everything you need. It isn't open on weekends. The area itself is a little quiet but seemed safe at all times.

During our stays we got to try both the breakfast buffet and dinner buffet at the hotel. The breakfast included all the standard fare, eggs, bacon, sausages etc, plus a cold selection of cold meats and salads and a bakery selection. There was also juice, tea and coffee, yoghurts and interestingly, sparkling wine! It seemed standard across most hotels in Spain to offer sparkling wine as part of the breakfast buffet. The dinner buffet included large chicken and mussel paellas, various fish and meat dishes, French fries and a few other things, in addition to the same cold meats and salads selection and desserts. The meals were ok without being spectacular, there weren't any standout dishes but everything was completely edible and enjoyable. Service at the restaurant was ok, there was a very efficient waitress who took care of most of the tables while other staff were a little slower. In addition to the restaurant, there is also a bar which serves drinks and I believe snacks as well.

In terms of dining outside the hotel, I would suggest a visit to the Mercado de San Miguel, a delightful indoor market full of tapas bars. Go to a few places, grab a drink and a tapa and enjoy! It is virtually right next door to the Plaza Mayor so you can easily do both in one day if you need to.

One thing to note about the hotel was the lifts, they were pretty small! They were big enough to take perhaps six people, but with suitcases it was limited to perhaps two or three. Stairs were also available.

Our second stay was more or less the same as our first, however we were given rooms on a lower floor and they weren't interconnecting. The two stays were more or less the same however we preferred the first stay because of the interconnecting rooms.

Staff throughout the hotel were generally friendly and happy to help out in making our stay a success. We were able to chat with them in Spanish but from conversations we heard them having with other guests, most also speak English.

All in all, the Hotel Agumar seems a pretty decent choice for a hotel in Madrid. It is close to the attractions, service is pretty good and the rooms are functional. Typically we stay at an international chain hotel when we travel so the Hotel Agumar would probably not be our first choice if we were visiting Madrid on our own, but by no means is it bad and if you find it suits you, I can't find any reason why you shouldn't go ahead and make a booking.

I hope you've found my review useful. If you have any other questions please feel free to message me.

Room Tip: Request interconnecting rooms if you are travelling as a family with two rooms. If you'd like a...

We stayed for 3 nights between November 25-27 2013. Friendly welcome, good location 200 metres from the lovely Retiro Park. We arrived into Madrid late at night so took a cab direct to the hotel, this cost €45. Worth it, to avoid sussing out the bus and rail network at that time of night. Hotel is 800 metres from Atocha Station, you can't see or hear the station. We had Room 232, which is at the back of the hotel. No view, but absolutely quiet. Average sized room, so don't expect a Presidential Suite, American cousins! Good clean room and bathroom, although 2 single beds was a disappointment, but then this was a last-minute budget break. Aircon worked fine. Blackout curtains. From the bus stop just outside the hotel, take the No. 14 to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, where Real Madrid play. Take the stadium tour, 20 euros. Fantastic! Take the No. 32 from the hotel to a stop named Benavida in order to get you to Plaza Mayor. Each ride costs €1.50, seemingly regardless of how many stops you are on board for. Well worth it. Bar shut at 11.30pm, but Madrid is coming to life then, so we found a bar across the road for a drink. Lifts were fine, and came swiftly each time. The reception staff were extremely helpful, spoke good English and gave us lots of info on buses and trains. I read the comments of some who have stayed here and was wondering what we would find, and couldn't understand why they had written their stuff. There are posher (and more expensive) places to stay, but we would definitely stay here again. Good value.

We stayed one night on the way to Toledo because it was within walking distance from the railway station. The Prado and Reine Sofia art galleries were within easy reach and the Hop on Hop off tour bus stopped nearby. The bedroom was a bit drab, probably due to the low lighting but good in all other aspects. The staff were helpful, the restaurant was good and the breakfast excellent. It was very good value for money rather than luxury.

Many say "not four star hotel" but the rate is not 4 star price. We booked a double for $80 euro. The room was clean, comfortable, it was located in a good part of town close to transportation. So if you are looking for the Ritz, this isn't the place, but if you usually stay at a Sheraton in the US, you'll be fine here. The staff was very English friendly too.

Room Tip: I think the property is all smoking hotel so if sensitive to this, ask when booking.
