Excellent Place to stay in Madrid. Location is great. Very nice and modern hotel, and staffs are friendly. Breakfast Buffet is great, but expensive.

The hotel wasn't as bad as I thought it would be after having read some reviews. From the airport we bought the 10 ticket pass and went to the Atocha subway stop after transferring once. From there it was about a 5 minute walk. The neighborhood the hotel is located in is not that great but for the price you can't beat it. The staff at the front desk was fine..I guess we didn't get the rude person. Our room was on the 4th floor looking out of our window at another building. The room was larger than I expected and our bathroom was quite large. It was all very clean and looked as if the room had been recently painted and the bathroom looked remodeled. We didn't have any problems with the bed. Also there was some noise one night of loud guests but other than that it wasn't too bad. Breakfast at the hotel is exspensive but since there is nothing close by to eat at you really don't have much choice. The selection was very good with lots of different food options to choose from. They also serve dinner at the restuarant but nothing looked real appetizing to us. I guess we are just not used to some of the food served there. The location of the hotel is quite good. You are close to the train station and also to many of the museums. The Reina Sofia is very close by. Near the Sofia is a pizza restaurant where we ate a couple of times called Pinocchios. It wasn't as exspensive as lot of the other places. We couldn't find anywhere decent to eat near the hotel. We even asked at the front desk and they said there was nowhere to eat. Overall we had a good experience and would probably stay here again.

  • Liked — Location near museums and train station and the price
  • Disliked — Internet access was exspensive...also not the best neighborhood

We stayed in the Carlton for 5 nights at the end of March 08. Loved the hotel, only found one tiny fault: The air conditioning-because of the time of year, only the heating worked, and as the weather outside was warm, it made our room boiling. We ended up having to leave windows open (we were up on the 5th floor so not a problem) but I would like the air con to be available if you wish. Other than that we can't fault the hotel-the reception staff were all very friendly and spoke english, i was expecting them not to be friendly having read other reviews, but was pleasantly surprised. Jorge checked us in and helped with any problems, he was very efficient and friendly. The hotel provided us with helpful info-a big Madrid map in the room, and also a 'Madrid Style' book which gave lots of hints and tips, including good restaurants etc. On travelling from the airport, we got the metro (1€ for a single trip but you have to pay 1€ supplement charge from the airport-the machines are very easy to use, or €6.70 for a ten trip ticket-again with the supplement if you buy from the airport) I found the easiest route whilst you're getting your bearings is line 8 (pink) all the way to Nuevos Ministerios, then line 10 (dark blue) to Tribunal, then light blue (1) to Sol and then the yellow line (3) to Palos de la Frontera. The walk from here is very easy (out of the station, turn left onto Paseo de las Delicias and keep walking for about 5 minutes), however when you get your bearings, Atocha metro station is near too and you don't have to change metro as often. I recommend travelling via Palos de la Frontera whilst you've got suitcases-coming from Atocha there are a few big roads to cross. A few experiences from Madrid- Go to Toledo, the trains run quite regulary from Atocha Renfe station very close to the hotel, and it's a beautiful old city, worth travelling out of Madrid for. The tour of Estadio Santiago Bernabeu was brilliant, well worth the money, as was the tour of the bull fighting stadium (metro to Ventas) which is a beautiful building whether you're for or against the fights. The tour is conducted in spanish and english, and the tour guide was very helpful. We found Sol the place to be of a nighttime, La Tosta on Calle Victoria had lovely sangria for €10, and the very friendly barstaff gave us free tapas. Well worth a visit! All in all, i couldn't recommend the Carlton Hotel more, the location may be a little bit out of the way for some, but you can infact walk to the Gran Via in 15 mins, and it's only 5 minutes on the metro to Sol. The price we paid was brilliant, the whole experience was amazing and we didn't want to come back to England at the end!

  • Liked — The low cost, location, nice big rooms
  • Disliked — only a small fault-the air con not available whilst we stayed, room got hot in the heat from outside

Easy to get to this hotel - buy 10-ticket 'Metrobus' at airport. Add 2 euros supplement each way for getting to and from airport. The airport is huge and empty - takes ages to walk to the gates - use the lifts and not escalators to save time.

Nearest metro stop is Palos de la Frontera (line 3) and 5 mins walk. Hotel a bit dated in appearance. Ask for a quiet inside room - they are smaller but away from traffic noise. You can still hear next door and people walking above. World's hardest hotel beds! Prepare for a stiff back in the morning.

Breakfast is good but expensive at 13 euro. There is a good cafe just beyond the Metro on the same side of the street instead. Beware of pickpockets in Madrid - I nearly had a bag stolen that was by my feet in an ice cream bar at Atosha - the waitress alerted me just in time.

You can walk from hotel to Retiro park, Atosha railway station, Reine Sofia modern art gallery, Prado and many other places. Hotel is well situated - not too central but the Metro is so good you need not pay more for a more central location. try the wonderful Museo de Jamon for the bets hams and other meals - there is one near the hotel and it is good for snacks and full meals too.

I made my booking over the hotels website which was really easy to use and booking details could be checked online after to ensure confirmation. No need to pay any thing in advance

The hotel was easy to find and close to the metro. Good location for museums and gardens, about a 15 min walk to the Plaza Mayor. Nice square near to the Art Gallery only two or three mins walk. Lots of Tapas restaurant/bars nearby for snacks and drinks.

Would recommended to others, as it good value compared to other hotels in Madrid

We stayed here for 3 nights in March 2008. Friendly helpful porter and check in was efficient if not over-friendly. Room was non-smoking, as requested, on the 6th floor. I was a bit worried about noise as we were overlooking the main road but the windows were well soundproofed. The bathroom was a little bit on the small side but everything worked.

The best thing was the breakfast! Excellent buffet, all kinds of dishes to choose from, and fresh fruit to take with you if you so wished.

Some previous reviewers have felt the location of the hotel was a bit out of the way - it's certainly not central, but it's only a couple of minutes from both the metro and Atocha station, and a 10 minute walk from the Prado.. The plus is that it's a relatively quiet area.

Two slight negative points. The bar/restaurant only serves sandwiches until 7.30 pm., and after that the dinner menu was rather limited - three of the seven choices were veal, which I don't eat. The service was extremely friendly and efficient, though.

Secondly, the interrnal soundproofing was not all that good. We could distinctly hear late-night conversations taking place two rooms away, and the doors are extremely loud when they slam shut.

We were a bit disconcerted on our last morning to discover that when we returned to our room after breakfast, our keys had already been deactivated! This seemed a bit over-enthusiastic, especially as we hadn't yet paid our bill, but reception were mildly apologetic and reactivated them.

  • Liked — Quiet location near public transport; the breakfasts
  • Disliked — Poor room soundprrofing

The hotel Carlton is nicely kept up, rooms are big and modern and the view from the 6th floor over the city was nice. However, if you are here to see Madrid I think you could find more centrally located hotels that would meet your needs. If I had known more about the city (I did try to find some details - central locations and the like) I would have preferred a room near the Palace since this it seems is the hub of activity in Madrid.

Back to the hotel - since it seems that The Carlton serves mainly business people the staff at the front desk was of little help when I wanted to see the sights or find a good Tapas bar. Instead I was left to my own to figure out what could be seen in the limited amount of time I had. I figured that the Opera and Palace where good places to start, but when I asked again at the desk about getting to this part of town little help was provided in any way shape or form.

My room had a nice view of the city and a great big bath room - both very nice. However, the bed was like a rock. That said the Carlton made up for many of its shortcomings when I got up the next morning and headed to breakfast - WOW what a spread and the service was VERY pleasant - unlike the desk staff. Tons of choices and fresh squeezed juice.

  • Liked — Great breakfast
  • Disliked — Front desk staff hardly helpful
