“Overall, enjoyed the hotel”
Reviewed 23 July 2014 via mobile

I agree with the review written by MaineScott on the pros and cons, but will add a couple of comments. The first is that if you are a Marriott Elite member, you will get free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. That is the good news. The bad news is that Marriott Elite members (gold and platinum) usually get free breakfast as well, but the AC Hotels do not participate in this. They will offer you a special price that can be included in the room fee, but is is still a pretty typical Marriott style breakfast. My advice, go out to a cafe.

MaineScott also noted the paper thin walls. Very true! The exterior noise is well insulated. The interior, not so much.

Overall, I think this is a very nice hotel, friendly staff, and pretty good location within walking distance on most of the major sites.

We spent a night at the AC Carlton and it was generally a good experience, with one small caveat and one significant caveat. First the good: The hotel has a fairly convenient location. The Atocha station is just two blocks away and easily walkable. It's just a few minutes' walk to the Prado area, and just a few minutes more to the old town area. There are plenty of restaurants nearby as well. The front desk staff were friendly, and at least one spoke very good English. The interior of the hotel is well maintained and even the hallways have a nice, chic decor. The rooms are very spacious by European standards, especially for a room downtown in a capital city. The bedroom area was large, with plenty of open space, and everything was clean and in good condition. The bathroom was also very large and spacious by any standard. The room had an effective, user-controlled climate system, as well as windows that open and shutters to cover them. The bed and pillows were comfortable as well. As for the caveats, the first small caveat is that the free wi-fi is only available in the lobby, not in the guest rooms, although there appeared to be a paid service available in the rooms. The wi-fi in the lobby worked fine. The larger caveat is that the walls in this hotel are truly paper thin (the interior walls, not the exterior walls). If the people in the room next to you are doing so much as having a normal conversation, you will hear it. If they are watching TV, you will hear it. So depending on who is in the rooms next door, you may or may not have some undesirable noise, as we did. If not for that flaw, this would be a fantastic hotel.

Great place, would definitely stay here again if visiting Madrid. The front desk staff spoke good English. We came in prior to check in time, and our bags were stored for us while we went out and looked around town, and better yet, the staff moved them to our room for us before we got back to the hotel, which was much appreciated after our long day of travel. The room was large, clean, and comfortable. Located within walking distance of the airport shuttle drop off, train station, and several tourist attractions as well as places to eat.

We stayed one night at this hotel on our way to catch a flight after a trip across Southern Spain. We initially chose it because of its location being very close to the Atocha train station. We were greeted by a very pleasant and helpful front desk staff who offered us two room choices and even gave the keys to both rooms for us to examine and decide, a gesture that was much appreciated. We ended up selecting a room that has its own terrace on the upper floor of the hotel and this was a really nice place to spend the last evening after a long and tiring trip, watching the sunset with a relatively unobstructed view of a portion of Madrid even from this busy city location. Speaking of location, this hotel is close to many landmarks and places to see in Madrid. The front desk staff gave us a summary with an impressive list of things to see and do within a walking distance but we only managed to drag our tired feet up to the Prado which was less than a 10 minutes walk. Next time in Madrid, we will chose this hotel again and make sure to stay longer to take full advantage of its location. One warning to travelers, while the hotel is a relatively short walk from the train station, it can be an inconvenient walk if you are carrying multiple pieces of luggage as we were. Our dilemma was to chose between the inconvenient walk or wasting the time of a cab driver for a very short ride, something they may not appreciate, especially if they have been waiting for a while for their ride. We ended up walking! The front desk told us that there is an exit gate from the train station that puts you closest to the hotel. The gate we took was unfortunately the farthest! Worth asking the train station info staff about that other gate as this will save you the longer walk on city streets. Otherwise, our room was clean, comfortable and modern. The only reason I am not giving this hotel the 5 stars is the lack of free wifi in the room, although it is freely available in the main lobby. It is not so much a question of cost anymore because I believe theirs was very reasonable but more about convenience and what is becoming standard everywhere else. Nonetheless, still a solid 4 stars and a definite yes for choosing this hotel again in future visits to Madrid.

Room Tip: If available, chose top floor rooms with a terrace.

We stayed at the AC Carlton for 2 nights in June, 2014 and were generally very pleased. They accommodated our status as Marriott Rewards Gold Elite members with free wifi in our room (as compared to free in the lobby or for a 5 euro/day fee) and free mini bar. Rooms were very clean, and they were able to add a comfortable roll-away for our 19 y/o. We were pleasantly surprised by the jetted, oversized tub too. The only real negative was the WAY OVERPRICED breakfast that was just mediocre. Had we known it was not included , we would have gone elsewhere. The location was close to Reina Sofia and between a couple of Metro stops with a few cafés close by. Overall, it was great!

Dear Mr Mills,

I would like to thank you for your comments about your stay at our hotel. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us.

I appreciate your valuation for our breakfast, although we think it has really good value for money and good quality for breakfast at 4 star hotels in Europe and in Madrid.

We really appreciate your comments and we hope to see you in your next stay in Madrid.

Thank you very much and kind regards

José Alfonso García

This review is base on two stays over a 10-day period. I am a Platinum Marriott award guest and was not sure what to expect from AC Hotels since they are a relatively recent addition to the Marriott family. I am happy to say that we had a very good experience and I would certainly stay here again if I had the pleasure of visiting Madrid in the future. The staff was excellent and accommodating. We had an issue with the A/C in one of our rooms and they immediately upgraded us to an interior courtyard room that completely fit my need for American-style air-conditioning. The beds were comfortable, the shower and bath were much better than most Marriott's in the US. The lobby bar was very nice and the hotel was extremely convenient to the Atocha rail station. As mentioned previously, the elevators are tiny, but there are two of them and it was not a problem for us.

Room Tip: Higher rooms are quieter. Inner courtyard rooms don't have a view, but they are cooler because...
