We were allocated Room 316 upon arrival but I had already read that some of the rooms are at the front and and get noisy. This was the case as the police station is almost underneath as is a night club. The receptionist explained on checkin that she would try and find another room for us in the morning, which she did and we were given 427 which was a large room at the rear of the hotel. Very nice and spacious except for the shower/toilet which was extremely small. However the bed was huge and we slept well. The location is excellent with two Metro stations within 3-5 minutes walk, which is easily the best way to travel. The breakfast for 7 euros was good value with enough choice and gave a good start to the day. My only concern with this hotel is that there was nowhere to sit comfortably and have a coffee except for the restaurant.

El Coloso Hotel is in a great location to explore Madrid. As soon as I checked in the hotel front desk staff was very friendly. The room I was given was very clean. The only strange thing about this hotel is the elevator set up. You can either access it through the lobby , then get off on the first floor to get another elevator or you could simply get the elevator by exiting the hotel and using the side entrance facing the street. The Palacio Real and Museo Cerralbo are both within walking distance. If you want to visit the Prado, Reina Sofia , and Thyssen, you can take a quick taxi ride to the Prado, then from there you can easily walk to the other two museums. I booked guided tours with Julia Travel and their office is a very short walk from the hotel, probably about 5 minutes. Also next to the hotel is a grocery store in case you want to buy snacks to have in your room. If your in the shopping mood then a block away from the hotel is a street called Gran Via and there are lots and lots of places to buy gifts and souvenirs. Based on my experience staying here I do recommend El Coloso Hotel if you plan on visiting Madrid.

Firstly in our opinion, based on comparative experiences of hotels in other countries both in Europe and North America, this hotel is most certainly not a 4 Star standard hotel. The one important positive in favour of the hotel is its' central location, situated within a couple of hundred meters of two Metro stations; Plaza De Espana and Santo Domingo.
However during our stay [3 nights] this so called "4 Star" hotel had no bar, no eatery [except for breakfast which was adequate], no guest room coffee/ tea making facilities; or no leisure facilities for guests. On entering the hotel there are steps to negotiate to reach the reception desk and more steps again to the lift area. This observation is very relevant for disabled, elderly or persons with heavy luggage.
Our room [110] was of adequate size. The bed was comfortable and clean, but the pillows were very flat and when I requested a second pillow from reception [twice over two days] none was forthcoming; until I eventually asked and received one from the room cleaner. There were scuff marks on the wall inside the door and also scrape marks beside the bed. The only view from the room window was of a wall and other windows about 8 metres across from us. There is a key locking security safe in the room.
The bathroom was most unsatisfactory. There was no shelf room/counter top whatsoever beside the wash basin for even a wash bag. The bath glass shower screen kept closing into the bath when in use and the bottom plastic screen anchor was very filthy and the air vent wasn't much better. Also there was a considerable amount of laminate peeling from the bathroom door frame [left hand side].
Finally with regard to the our room; both in the morning and at night a horrible heavy smell of cigarette smoke drifted into our room from elsewhere as did noise from the corridor.
In conclusion, the hotel is well located but this would not encourage us to return again.

Room Tip: If you do not smoke ask for a room in a designated non smoking area in the hotel.

We stayed at a big room with balcony. The room and bathroom were clean and comfy. Breakfast was good and selection was big. Staff helpfull and nice.
Great location near the Gran via and plaza espana. 2 metro stations, 2 minutes walking distance.
Will go back again.

Hotel is right in the centre, so perfect for seeing Madrid, but room was very small and dismal and the bed was the hardest I have ever slept on - it was like a board! And the pillows were rock hard too! Added to this, was the fact that they don't use duvet covers, but wrap the duvet in two sheets - not very hygienic! The bathroom was tiny and there was a large chunk missing off the back of my toilet! It was clean but in need of a makeover.
The breakfast was ok, but only hot food was boiled eggs, scrambled eggs and frankfurters, so if you don't like continental breakfast, apart from cornflakes and muesli, you were stuck!
There is no bar in the hotel, so on returning from a hard day's sightseeing, you can't get a drink or coffee. I have to say, that the staff were very helpful, but that was about the "upside" of the hotel. I was just glad I only stayed two nights and wouldn't stay there again!

Room Tip: Apparently rooms facing the street are very noisy, but rooms facing inwards have the noise of the air conditioning units, so not sure if there are good rooms.
