“Nice hotel, next to a police station”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

The hotel is centrally located, near Gran Via. Very safe feeling in the neighborhood and actually most part of Madrid where tourists walk. You see a lot of policemen walking around.

The room was clean and spacious (we got 3 beds for a double) and free wi-fi working very well. Although overlooking the street, it was not noisy.

The staff is helpful and friendly.

Their buffet breakfast was excellent.

Room Tip: We always request consideration for being claustrophobic guests.

I looked at the pictures of the hotel at their webpage before the trip but the hotel looked much better on the picures then in real life. The room was ok but on my room there was no remote for the tv and the air condition did not work. The bed was really stiff.

I have stayed in this Hotel when I attend the FITUR fair, it is near the Gran Via, without the noise and bustling of that Avenue, and the rooms I have always received very roomy and with space to sit and work and another room as bedroom. Heating is always excellent, but now when I was in summer the AC was a bit tired, asked to have it checked and it worked better, breakfast is among the best I have had in a hotel in Spain, enough to carry on the whole day till dinner.....and service at the front desk is prompt and very good...my hotel in Madrid, and also has parking if needed.

Room Tip: Check a high floor or an inner room in the annex

Despite check in being from 1pm we weren't able to check in until 4.30. The staff were very unhelpful and kept on saying 'another 15 minutes', another 15 minutes etc, when clearly the room was no where near ready. The hotel itself was ok but not great.

We stayed at the Exe Coloso for 5 nights in April. We had asked for interconnecting rooms as we were travelling with our daughter but the rooms we were allocated opened onto the corridor. We asked to be moved and this was arranged for the last 4 nights of our stay. The staff were very helpful and polite. Overall the facilities here are good although it could all do with a lick of paint and some basic maintenance. Wifi was good and TV had a good range of channels (but only one in English). The first rooms we were given (204 and 205) were at the front of the building which have little balconies onto the street. We found them not particularly noisy but they were rather smelly (especially 204 which had a distinct aroma of sewage!) The second rooms (110 and 111) were at the back of the building - quieter and no smell but no view and no way of knowing if the sun was shining or not as the frosted windows open onto a small internal courtyard. Showers and baths were good with plenty of hot water although they were rather dated and did not really meet current day 4* standards. The bathrooms are marble and although this looks quite luxurious they were quite chipped and grubby in places.
The breakfast is excellent with a really good range of hot and cold options and a seemingly endless supply of juices, pastries, cheeses, cold meats etc. The only criticism was the coffee which was from a machine and had a really odd taste. I tried all of the options and none of them were 'proper coffee' and most seemed to be a variation on mocha. The best tasting one seemed to be the espresso with cold milk added. There is no restaurant on site but there does seem to be a room service option which we did not use. To be honest this hotel is so well sited there is a huge choice of restaurants within a few minutes walk, so there is really no need to eat in the hotel. There are several supermarkets nearby so water, chocolate etc. is all very easy to find. Toiletries were good and towels were large soft and spotless. Beds were firm and comfortable. Do ask for extra pillows though as the ones provided are long, thin and more or less useless.
Overall a very nice hotel and excellent value and location - probably more 3 star than 4 but otherwise very nice.

Room Tip: Avoid room 204 - it smells! Front rooms have a view of the street and a balcony, rear rooms are qui...

I enjoyed a lovely week staying at this hotel last March. El Coloso is in a very good location. Located in the heart of Madrid, between Gran Vía and Callao, the Hotel provides a comfortable atmosphere.

It is close to some of the most famous attractions of the city, such as Palacio Real, Los Jardines de los Sabatini, el Teatro Real, Plaza Mayor, vía Princesa and the famous Plaza de España, and subways as well as railways are also close. From the airport I reached the hotel with the Metro system with only one shift of lines.

Rooms are modern and very clean. They are all equipped with TV, free Wi-Fi, mini-bar and bathroom with telephone and hair dryer.

Breakfast time, with a wide array of dishes, was from 7.30 am to 11 am. It was good and selection was big. The hotel staff was excellent, very friendly and helpful with a 24 hour reception.

If I return to Madrid I will consider going back to El Coloso. So, based on my experience I do recommend it if you are thinking of visiting Madrid.
