The location is perfect as many other reviewers have mentioned. Unfortunately the first thing that happened was that we got moved to another hotel for the first night due to "technical problems" with our room. The hotel we were moved to was of a higher standard (albeit in a less central location) so I guess that was a reasonable deal. The smallness of our rooms when we moved back in was a little disappointing. We also missed having tea making facilities in the room but room service was very quick. Housekeeping also responded swiftly when we ran out of toilet paper although it would have been better if we had a spare roll ready to go. I would have liked a plug in my sink as well. Shaving in running water is not easy. We did not find the male reception and bar staff very friendly. Perhaps it is a cultural thing but we certainly felt we were putting the bar staff to a lot of trouble by getting them to serve us drinks. This was particularly true on our last night when most of the lights were turned out and the barmen said they were on an automatic system and could not be turned back on. They were on during our previous nights late night drinking so that did not make sense.

Stayed here for 3 nights in May. Perfect location for sightseeing round Madrid. 100m from plaza del sol, 5min walk from Plaza Mayor. Walking distance to all major landmarks and eating areas. Didn't have to use the metro at all.

Hotel itself is very nice, room was just what we needed with a large double bed and large bathroom. Very good continental breakfast. Only negative was lack of free WiFi in the hotel.

Centrally located, just 2 mins from Puerto del Sol and comfortable walking distance to all the major inner city attractions and barrios. Friendly, helpful staff, clean rooms and great choice for breakfast. The bar is also open late for a night cap before retiring to bed and the prices are very reasonable. One of our party was affected by outside noise through the night and were moved immediately on request with no fuss at all - Would recommend.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear of the hotel are the quietest.

The hotel is very centrally located with many sights within walking distance. First, I was a bit disappointed, because my room was a bit tiny and dark with windows facing the backyard. And the bed seemed very hard, I didn't expect to sleep well. But in the morning, I realized that I had slept like a baby. Others in the group weren't as lucky. They stayed in another part of the hotel where the lively neighborhood (disco) made it impossible to sleep. But the staff were very competent and helpful. They organized a relocation of the whole group to another hotel. Breakfast was good.

Room Tip: Try to book a "quiet room". Mine was in the rear part of the building.

The location of the hotel is excellent, very near the Puerta del Sol and the Gran Via and the area is very lively.
The reception is very nicely furnished and comfortable, the bar is situated in the large reception/lounge area.
The rooms seem to be a bit hit and miss, ours was fine as we were in a quiet part of the hotel. We asked for extra pillows and the mattress wasn't as hard as in other hotels we have stayed in. The television showed limited channels but this wasn't a problem as we were only on a short city break.
One of our group of friends said that her room was dark and others complained of the noise of people in the streets at Tapas bars and clubs in the early hours. In fairness to the hotel my friends were moved to another room after they complained.
We found the staff to be helpful and the staff in the bar and restaurant were very friendly.
Breakfast was fine with the usual selection of hot and cold food although the toaster took an age, and one morning it just gave up working altogether.
The big plus for us was that by booking lunch in the hotel on the day we were returning home we were able to keep the room until 6pm.
We had an evening flight home and I hate hanging around all day so that arrangement was perfect for us.
The lunch was around 20 Euros depending on the number of courses.
We were very happy with the lunch, the food was excellent and the service and ambience of the restaurant was a pleasant surprise. We just wished that we had eaten more in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room off the street

This hotel has a great location close to Puerta del Sol and the Gran Via which really is the centre of town from which many sights and neighbourhoods are walkable. The hotel itself has a comfortable ambience and, contrary to an earlier review by Tiziana B., we found the staff tried hard to be friendly and helpful. The hotel is let down by the following: 'hot' food in the breakfast buffet was invariably cold and everyday we had to ask for it be re-heated in the microwave; beds were hard and pillows were thin bolster-like pillows which had to be folded to provide any kind of support (and then were hard); wi-fi access in the bedroom cost Euro 25 for five days and then only gave access to the internet with either my laptop or my smartphone, not both at the same time (unbelievable!); the external IT support helpline could not be reached either in Spanish or in English; the TV in the bedroom must be at least 10 years old and was poor quality; the chair at the desk in the bedroom was too low making working at the desk uncomfortable.

My husband and I visited Madrid in the first week of Dec on our Honeymoon - first stop Madrid, very excited once we landed but very disappointed with the hotel.

Amazing location, hop, skip and you wouldn't need to jump to get to Grand Via & Puerta Del Sol and other buzzing location, but the rooms seemed so dull and gloomy.

Rooms are tiny but the bathroom was spacious!! which was really weird. The reception staff too were very reserved and not friendly at all, except for the girl with glasses who occasionally seemed a little friendly and also the restaurant staff - you could see a smile from time to time.

No bell boys to help you with your bags & suitcases, and I clearly don't know how to travel light, so dragging massive suitcases to our floor was not much fun!, I needed an iron to iron my clothes, they were not able to provide it, and the laundry staff who would be able to assist had already gone for the day!

you have to pay for Wifi if you want to use it in your room, but reception area has free wifi and if you asked the reception staff they will be able to give you the user name and password.

we stayed there for about 3-4 nights, dinner at the hotel restaurant is OK - we would suggest trying the local tapas bars around the area and there are plenty!!! breakfast was average!

There are nicer looking hotels on Gran Via which is a minute walk from Hotel Maria Elena

But the reception area looked nice and pleasant all set and decorated for Christmas
