“Great Classic with a Perfect Face Lift”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

We just spent two four day stays at this wonderful hotel. Forget that the price is perfect and the service impeccable, for a hotel this size it is really incredible that you can feel right at home. We got the recently renewed rooms on the seventh floor, room 724. They did a great job, fresh, modern and functional. Things to look forward to are the redone bathrooms with a great shower, the beautiful terrace overlooking the Parque del Retiro and the linen sheets.
Service was just at its best and the food wonderful.
I will stay no where else when I am in Madrid, the Wellington is the best I have experienced. Great hotel!

Room Tip: 724, great room with a wonderful terrace and a view to die for

Arriving from Los Angeles on a very long non-stop flight ,The Wellington Hotel was a very welcoming site indeed. My wife and I were whisked to a 7th floor suite with a balcony, and one of the most comfortable king size bed in memory. The stay included breakfast and access to the executive lounge. Both were awesome, the lounge was beautifully furnished and stocked with great spirits, wine and food - all free- till 11pm also free WIFI. the hotel staff was fantastic and very helpful. The rooms were being cleaned and fixed twice a day!!! Wow. Another big plus is the location, in the middle of the very nice and high-end Salamanca district. When visiting Madrid , The Wellington is second to none. P.S We selected the Wellington, based on TripAdvisor research.

How this is a 5-star hotel is beyond me. We were greeted by a friendly door-man, and that is where the service ended. The front desk staff where cold and unhelpful. We asked for some advice and information about things to see and do whilst in town (flamenco show, bull fight, etc...) the front desk lady wrote it all down and said they would investigate it and come back to us with some options, 'we'll call you' she said.... we never heard back from her.
We had booked his hotel specifically as it had a pool (one of only a handful of Madrid hotels offering a pool) and were told upon arrival that it's closed until June, Instant disappointment. What type of hotel closes their pool!? Everything that attracts you to this place in their pictures and description is either not available or costs extra ( the wellness centre, spa and sauna as an example )
This hotel is in a business district so every day the foyer is full of suits and ties, loads of workers and people there on conference, not really much fun fighting your way through a sea of business men to get to the breakfast room each morning. It felt more like a business conference centre than a hotel.
The beds and hard and uncomfortable, and the pillows were lumpy and old. Our room was small and that is being generous.
Way over-priced and not suited to anyone under the age of 50.

We just returned from our first trip to Madrid. We researched many hotels and decided on the Wellington for the pool and outdoor area knowing Madrid will be hot and we wanted to be able to relax in the sun as well as visit all the spectacular sites. We were really impressed with everything in the hotel. The staff were so helpful and friendly reception, poolside, spa and cleaners everyone wanted to help you. The poolside was excellent and very clean always being tidied up and the water was always being tested and cleaned in both the pool and the hot tub. We had a massage in the spa which we recommend. The gym and spa are great. The location is brilliant. Madrid tour bus is right outside the hotel and the metro is just round the corner. The hotel is really close to many tourist spots including retiro park which is beautiful. There is so much to do that we will definitely be back and staying here. As we didn't need to leave until later in the afternoon we asked if there was a possibility we could keep the room until later, answer no problem off course you can. That's good customer service! The reception staff were very knowledgeable on how to get around Madrid. Recommend this hotel !!

Just spent four days at the Wellington - the initial checkin was so disorganized and unaccommodating that I initially reacted that I would change hotels - should have done so!. the rooms weren't ready, we were "upgraded" to an unattractive suite - outdated but clean. The reception staff seemed almost baffled that we expected our rooms to be ready an hour and a half after checkin time.
Repeatedly, we were somewhat astonished that a five star hotel would be so disorganized. The outdoor restaurant at the pool seemed a little disjointed as well - like we might want a drink or heaven forbid- dinner. Service was awful - and again, somewhat baffled.
Very little English spoken, which was unique to the five star hotels that I have stayed in in major European cities, felt like we were in a three or four star hotel in a small village. I try very hard not to be the ugly American - but there just was no reason for the consistent bad service, sullen staff in the concierge level on the seventh floor - and dingy hallways.
The hotel is essentially a convention hotel, comparable to a midgrade (older) Hilton or Marriott in the states. Huge business groups were there and commandeered the central areas including the pool with a dj and live music, as well as the din in the breakfast room. This hotel is catering to large convention groups - not a high end tourist to Madrid.
We were in a good neighborhood and figured out how to follow a map to all the major sites - but it seemed the hotel was more concerned with making sure that the minibar was automatically monitored, rather than a guest was satisfied. While the front desk was pleasant enough - they just didn't seem to know what to do but go through the motions - same with the restaurant, and the concierge level bar - just didn't seem to care one way or another. This was consistent for four days - not a fluke.
They are charging rates similar to the Ritz - down the street - but not even in the same league. The star ratings have usually been somewhat consistent - but this hotel is at best a medium four star- if you want a five star in Madrid - this isn't the one. Its seen its prime and will take an overhaul before it changes. As indicated in other reviews, the location is fine, but the hotel is just getting by. As a tourist, keep looking - wish that I had.

The Wellington is well run, clean, with spacious rooms and marvelous water pressure in the showers. Breakfast was quite good. But the best feature is the excellent location near the wonderful Retiro park and in a great neighborhood with many high end stores and restaurants. It is a short walk to the Prado and one block from the Metro. Madrid is a really fun city to visit and this hotel is a good base of operations.

Everything worked fine and the staff was very polite and helpful. The room and the bathroom were spacious. I slept very well in the comfortable bed of the air conditioned and silent bedroom. Staff visited the room twice a day to clean it up and position the curtains. Free wifi.

The location of the hotel is great with easy access to the Buen Retiro Park and Prada. The price for a taxi to and from the airport was fixed at 30 euros and the journey took about 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.
