We had a layover in Madrid and this hotel was just what we needed: easy to get to from the airport, in the middle of everything so we could make the most of our short overnight stay, affordable, and very clean and comfortable. Really great experience.

I highly recommend this hotel while you are in Madrid. It is located in the heart of Gran Vía and within walking distance from almost everything you want to see in the city. The staff was great and accomodations were good.

I will definetely recommed this hotel for it's location, friendly staff and the value you get for your money.

Thank Yusseff D

Absolutely wonderful experience here. Perfect location for tours, shopping, historical sites, access to transportation. Please do the small upgrade for an higher floor and a better location. Look on their website and book direct for best rates and more specifics on upgrades and special rates for seniors.

Front desk staff can do ANYTHING for you from booking tours to changing money at a decent rate. Work with them in good spirit and they will really come through for you.

Room was clean, good size, well-appointed, quiet and a great view from the rear of the hotel (I would try to avoid the street side). Bathroom was very well appointed. Our room had a shower, a bath w/shower in it, a bidet, a toilet with handy telephone, a sink and plenty of freebie shampoos, lotions, etc. etc.

Down sides: No coffee or tea in the room but a Starbucks across the street. Wi-Fi free in the lobby but a very weak signal. As mentioned by others, you get free access to good wi-fi at almost any restaurant, coffee house, or store in Madrid.

Room Tip: Higher floor on the back side (away from the street). Pay the small upgrade fee for this. You will...

I spent a week in Madrid with my family. The hotel is located in the heart of the city, close to many different shops, restaurants, points of interest. Metro station is at the door step. Hotel Staff ver helpful and kind. Breakfasts was good but it is a pity that we had to pay additional 10 eur/person/breakfast. The interiors of the room - nothing special, a bit old fashioned. Free wifi is only available in the loby, if you want it in your room you have to pay additional 12 eur/24h of usage which I think nowadays is a bit of an exaggeration.

A weekend in Madrid with my partner, we loved this hotel.
We walked to most Madrid hot-spots, from our hotel, really convenient for eating/drinking/shopping.
The reception staff were wonderful and helpful, even helping us to book some Real Madrid tickets online as we couldn't understand the Spanish website (English people problems)
The entrance to the hotel was grand and welcoming, the rooms where spacious and clean and the rooftop pool was AMAZING - Such a shame it was too chilly to use in September, but we did enjoy some lovely cocktails up there to soak up the views.
Loved Madrid and loved this hotel.

I agree with previous reviewer. It's good enough. We paid about $110/night with breakfast. It's better to list the pros/cons because this certainly is not a "top hotel" but it's location and condition certainly qualify it for very good value:

Positives:
- Great location - central; can walk almost everywhere (palace, shopping promenade, Prado)
- Euro character - marble lobby and old fashioned Euro hallways, etc.
- Not sure where you can stay in a major Euro capital for under $125 USD like this
- Staff is polite and helpful
- Rooms in back have a terrific view of mountains and palace
- Rooms in back are super quiet

Considerations:
- Not updated - last update must have been 30 years ago
- Rooms are small - beds are generally twin (two stuck together for a king - real euro old fashion)
- Bathrooms are small and fairly spartan
- Hot water can take 5-10 minutes to arrive on higher floors
- Carpeting and hallways are old, dingy and quirky in general
- TV did not work properly in multiple rooms -- only 6 or 7 channels anyway and many are "snowy" - not a room by room issue, I spoke w/other guests and it is throughout hotel
- Wifi is extra and EXPENSIVE

For comparison, there is a Hotel Mecure (Mercure?) right next to this hotel. It is a modern european budget hotel. I have stayed in the Mercure chain in Paris. Would never choose it over the Emperador. With all its drawbacks, Emperador at least feels warm and authentic.

It may not be fair, but one final thing that I must mention is that bottled water is not provided for free in the rooms. My assumption was that this meant that the tap water was ok to drink. One of my traveling companions staying in a different room said that the water from the tap smelled like sewage. People in Madrid say that the water in the center of the city is fine out of the tap, but I got sick. It could have been from food anywhere in the city or it could have been the tap water, but my travel colleague felt that the water from the hotel tap smelled pretty bad. Maybe the hotel should offer complimentary bottled water?

Room Tip: Rooms in the back and on higher floors (ending with -x09, x10, x11) are quiet and have views of old...

If you are looking for a simple place to stay in downtown Madrid, with almost everything within a walking distance, then this is the place to stay. There is nothing unique or special about this hotel, but there is nothing lacking either. Comfortable clean rooms, basic facilities, just OK breakfast, helpful not-much-smiling staff. It is a neutral place located at the main Gran street, with easy to get connections to the airport etc etc. Overall, good.
