“No Hot Water on the 9th Floor”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2014

I stayed at the Emperador Hotel in Madrid a few weeks ago and chose to stay there based on some of the reviews provided on Trip Advisor. It was a mistake. The hotel is definitely in the heart of the city and that's about it. Because it is located in the city, there is a lot of noise from a nearby rooftop restaurant/bar which goes on very late into the night. I had to wear my earplugs both nights to sleep through the night.

Our room was located on the 9th floor and maybe due to the poor plumbing the water pressure was non-existent in the shower and the sink. One morning there was no warm/hot water available at all. We asked to be moved to a lower floor, they complied and this changed the plumbing considerably. The bidet was the only redeeming thing about the bathroom.

As other reviews have stated there is no free wifi in the room. We thought this may not be an issue since the lobby has free wifi but there is not a lot of room to just stand around looking at your smartphones in the lobby...

Overall, I would not stay at this hotel again.

Stayed at The Emperado for 4night break in late May. Had a classic room on 9th floor. Lovely room and especially good because of balcony with table and chairs - lovely to watch the busy streets below. Hotel is conveniently located for metro and bars, eateries and shops. Rooftop pool and bar area really relaxing. Would highly recommend.

Room Tip: Choose a room on a higher floor if possible.

My family and I spent 3 nights at the Emperador in May. The location of the hotel is excellent; 15mts walk to most of the attractions which include the Royal Palace, shopping center, plazas, Parks and eateries. The staff are friendly and helpful; they helped us book a dinner table at one of the flamenco performances. The rooms are made daily and is very tidy. The only compliant I would have is that they don't have a kettle in the room for coffee & tea. They do have one in the more expensive rooms I think. Rooftop is great with beautiful views. Loved the place and would go again if in Madrid.

Room Tip: A higher floor room on the back is very quiet.

Myself and 2 friends stayed for 3 nights in early May. THe Hotel is on the Grand Via and a short stroll from the main shopping District. We booked with Bookings.com and got an excellent rate.

The Hotel has a very spacious and comfortable lobby but the prize goes to the rooftop swimmingpool and Bar. Rooms are extremely clean and staff were always very helpful.

We didnt have breakfast in the hotel (€20) but found a fabulous bruch place across the road Le Pain Quotidien.

We spent three nights in the hotel for a hen party over the last bank hol weekend in May. A conveniently located hotel amongst the hustle and bustle of the shops market squares and places to eat. Walking around was very easy. Staff were very friendly, though our rooms were very dated compared to the impression set in the glamorous lobby. A few of the rooms in our party were more modernised - maybe the hotel is going through a slow refurb. Our room smelt of smoke though so do ask for non-smoking rooms when booking - we didn't realise smoking was allowed in hotel rooms. Also irons are not available in rooms or by room service, you could only send your items to be ironed during the morning laundry service which was around half 7 every morning - not a great time! No kettle in the rooms either which made having a simple cup of tea or hot water a tad difficult. Room temp got quite cold at night we weren't sure how to put the heating on. Roof top pool was fab plenty of sun loungers to accommodate us all. Pool water temp was freezing - it is not heated but still a nice bonus to have! Didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food. Was fine for what we needed for our short stay.

Room Tip: Ask for non-smoking if you are not a fan of the smell.

Stayed here for 3 nights in May. Overall experience was good, it's a grand old hotel with charming features. The decor is old-style, with thick carpets, heavy wooden doors and the occasional chandelier.
had a room on the 7th floor, a club room. The room was large, with a large bathroom, wardrobe, safety deposit box and TV. Good choice of TV channels, and a nice view over the Gran Via. Room was cleaned well everyday, and toiletries were always restocked. Bathroom had shower, tub and a bidet, and a lovely set of monogrammed towels. Definitely a well-equipped room! Downsides were few, the bed needed more pillows, and the noise insulation was poor - I could hear my neighbours talking and snoring. It didn't stop me sleeping, but if you're a light sleeper then you should probably look elsewhere.
There's a rooftop terrace with pool - this is a great area, but be aware it gets booked for private parties. There's a chance that hotel guests can't always use it for part of the day. Saturday was busy up on the roof, Sunday was deserted. It's a great feature that puts the hotel ahead of others on the Gran Via.
Staff were fine, seemed adequately helpful but no more that necessary! Didn't bother with breakfast, but 19euro for breakfast is ridiculous. Go to the VIP cafe 50 metres down the road, or one of the cafes round the corner..or the market! Wifi is also chargeable, if you're there for more than a few days suggest you get a local Sim card for your phone/ modem, or just pop down to Mcdonalds or dunkin donuts directly opp the hotel.
Overall the hotel reminds me of a large traditional Victorian hotel, kind of like the ones you find in British seaside towns. It's not cutting-edge modern, but the location is brilliant. You can explore so much on foot. Rooms are well-specified, and we had a comfy stay.

Room Tip: Upper floor club rooms
