“What a location!”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

Right on Gran Via next to bars, shops and restaurants, you really couldn't ask for much more than this.

The lobby was immaculate (although sometimes too busy because of Internet users, but I'll come onto that later) Rooms were clean and well presented, staff friendly and helpful and the pool area on the roof (with its views) was amazing!

As described, this hotel is within a very short walk of the city's main attractions and there is even an open topped tour bus stop right opposite.

This really is a superb hotel in a superb city!

However, there were just a few negatives.

Being allocated a room with two (very hard) single beds when we were clearly a married couple.

Even though we had a 'club room' we were still charged €12 per day to access the [slow] Internet in our room (and even then every time my wife logged on to her device I got logged off of mine!!)

Charging for the Internet in the room did result in people crowding into the Lobby to access the 'Free' WIFI (which made it look overly busy all the time)

The Air Con in the room could have been a bit cooler

Having the main towel rail directly above the WC did mean a few 'diving saves' from me to stop them falling into the toilet bowl as few times!

But apart from that.. an excellent stay!

This is the second time I have stayed in Madrid and although the hotel I stayed at previously was nicer this one, I really wanted a pool. As anyone knows travelling through Europe in summer it is so hot so its nice after a day of site seeing to come back for a swim. Upon checking in they had booked my partner in a twin room (although on a romantic package) which they did rectify to a double in a few hours so no complaints.

Location was great, rooms are a little dated but clean and has everything you need. Only wifi in the lobby which is a little annoying.

The nice thing about the pool was that there were always lounge beds available.Great music and drinks and food. Cocktails by the pool were about 13 euro.

I would stay here again.

We spent 3 nights in this hotel and loved our stay there. It is ideally situated on the Grand Via which is one of the main thoroughfares of Madrid. We arrived by train and taxi fare was about $15 and left by air and taxi fare was $30. There is a metro station within metres of the front door and you could probably reach the hotel much cheaper by public transport. Also there is a hop on hop off bus stop just across the road. The rooms are a reasonable size and the bathroom was excellent. The hotel is spotless and the ground floor lounge is very comfortable. The roof top bar and pool is a fantastic way to wind down and escape the heat. The pool is quite large. Staff were friendly and efficient. A great value hotel for what we paid and would recommend to anyone.

Do NOT go to this hotel, if you and your family, are among those who uses the internet !! The hotel charges 12 € per day per device. This means that I should pay app. 200 € for two days connectivity, if I as normally would connect the two connected devices per person in two days (4 persons with each 2 connected devices in 2 days : 4 x 2 x 2 x 12 € = 192 € ). This is way out of line and shows that the hotel management needs to revise their calendars to find out, that they are now in the year 2014 A.D.
Besides this it is a classic hotel with marble bathrooms, thick carpets and all the stuff that comes with this kind of hotels. The location is perfect in the middle of the city quarters near the central places and metro stations and the pool area on the top is great with a large pool, lounge are and great view over the city.
We hot a room with no view at all - looking at a wall 1,5 meters away with no idea of whether is as night or day, so request for room with a view.
But again the internet prices totally spoiled the picture for us. Even though the connection was free in the lobby area, but this had perfumed air and the we could not sit there all the time.

Room Tip: When you book forts consider if you really need internet and then remember to request a room with a...

Do yourself a favour and book this hotel. Outstanding value for the quality of the hotel in general although drinks and food are a bit pricey to make up for the cheap room price. Roof top bar and pool is a must have for the steaming hit temperature of spanish summer. Location is slap bang in the middle of everything would definitely go back.

The roof top pool was great- lounged out there for hours ordering drinks from the bar staff! They were average sized rooms- but always clean and tidy. The lack of free wifi in the rooms was a bit disappointing for such a 'grand' hotel. Walking distance to Plaza Mayor and the San Miguel markets which were the highlight of my time in Madrid.

Room Tip: If the budget allows, go for one with a balcony

We spent 3 nights at the Emperador with two friends and the overall experience was very good.

The overall decor is on the 'Grand' side and the rooms we had were large but a bit old fashioned furnishing wise but this is in keeping with the overall ambience of the hotel. A great big bonus is the roof top pool and sunbathing area, which is brilliant to relax in after being out and about seeing the many local sights and visiting the excellent shops, cafes, and bars - you also get a great view of the surrounding area as the hotel is on one of the highest points in the area.

The hotel itself is well placed as is a short walking distance to the Sol area, which has some lovely squares, and also to the Prado Museum. For those less mobile the Santo Domingo metro station is literally right opposite the front door.

We didn't have a breakfast in the hotel as there are so many brilliant places to eat within a very short distance and the night life is really top notch - we visited a Flamenco show in a small theatre just off of the Calle Del Carmen, which was excellent, as you can sit within feet of the stage.

Madrid is a superb location for a city break and the Emperador Hotel is in an ideal location to enjoy it's many attractions.
