I had to spend one night in Barajas to make connection and this was a bad bet. Totally outdated, room had chipped walls, non-working A/C, just terrible for over $150/night. However, it's 5 min from airport, but I'd you can find alternative, take it.

Typical Melia Hotel, clean, ample rooms, free wifi and good service. About 2-3 miles to the airport, ample parking on the premises. Ordered coffee and pastries in the morning and only hot milk came, when I asked for the coffee, only one cup of coffee was brought up. Other than that, everything was fine. Would stay there again for pre-flight.

Pro's: the rooms are very spacious and clean, the bed was comfy with high quality linen, a deep soaker tub in the bathroom, a full wall of windows for a bright and airy room, good parking right in front of the hotel entrance, and free airport shuttle that runs every 10 minutes.

Con's: the outdoor pool was empty and under repair, and there is significant noise from the plumbing in adjacent rooms.

Overall, a pretty good hotel if you're looking for something close to the airport.

This is a great place to stay at the airport with a free shuttle bus back and forth. The buffet dinner at the restaurant is a good deal compared with the alacarte menu.

Room Tip: Higher floors may be better if there is a disco/party below

We phoned the hotel from the airport as there was no sign of the bus where they told us it would be, but it turned out to be about 30 metres away, in a bay that was invisble from where it was supposed to be parked. Apart from that, getting there was easy. It then took 15 minutes to check in, although we had booked online and given all required information. It looked as if they were typing in the entire contents of both passports very very slowly.

The room was a bit on the cool side because one window latch was broken so window slightly ajar, but there was no obvious method of heating nor any controls. There was a TV, but no list of channels (on-screen list was very hard to use). No tea/coffee making. Bathroom just about ok too. Basin tap very slow; shaving mirror bracket there, but mirror missing. Floor cold marble and a bit unpleasant. The safe could only be used by swiping the room key, but after dark the room lights would only come on with the room key in a device by the door, so we could not use it! Such a bizarre arrangement.

We had enough airline food so didn't really need dinner, but we found the restaurant closed anyway. There was no sign on it that might have told us that actually the hotel had another restaurant hidden away in the back (which we found only at breakfast time) that had probably open for dinner.

I've stayed in Melia hotels before that were perfectly ok; I guess nobody willingly spends more than one night here so they feel they don't have to bother.

Location: under 400m from the Barajas metro station, so would not have been hard to get in to the centre of Madrid, had we not been to tired to do that.
