“Great Hotel, Great Location, Great Staff”
Reviewed 6 May 2013

My husband and I have just returned from 3 days in this hotel. On arrival we were allocated room 207 which turned out to be at the end of a corridor with a small window looking into a wall. There was minimal natural daylight in the room and it was very small and cramped. I asked at reception if we could change room and the male receptionist immediately, and without making a fuss, offered us another room which looked onto the courtyard. It was a much larger and more cheerful room (room 203). The only down side was the lack of tea and coffee making facilities in the room but tea and coffee was readily available at the bar (at a charge).

The hotel is in a perfect location close to Metro Stations, the Palace, The Gran Via, restaurants and Tapas bars and the Madrid Tour Bus stops. The breakfast was very good value and there were no restrictions on how much we ate. Every member of staff we encountered were very welcoming and helpful. This was our first visit to Madrid and if returning again we would not hesitate to return to this hotel, but I would request not to be allocated room 207.

The entrance is nice, it has grandeur. The rooms however are small and stuffy (no windows can be opened), they could do with a make-over.
Breakfast is a treat!
Staff is friendly and helpfull.
We had a good stay overall.
The location is absolutely perfect, right in the center of Madrid and lots of peace and calm.

Very well located in the old town, well placed for walking everywhere, and has certain charm about it,. Helpful staff, and also worthy of a mention some good food. Great area for siting outside in the January sun whislt enjoying some light grazing and a glass or two. Many thanks for an enjoyable stay

Very helpful staff and fabulous location (in between Callao and Opera metro stations), about 300 meters east of the royal palace. Despite it's central location we found it plenty quiet (we stayed Friday & Saturday night), probably due to the double glazed windows and the convent of les descalzas reales, just next door. Excellent, if slightly pricey breakfast. There are interior rooms, which face the atrium that extends from the lobby to the roof, or exterior rooms that face to the outside of the hotel. All the rooms seem to be of approximately the same size. The entire property was impeccably clean, including the room and bathroom. Slightly dated room interiors but entirely satisfactory. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: An inside, atrium facing room should be quieter

We stayed for 3 nights at this hotel and were very pleased with the choice. It is in a pleasant square very close to shops and walking distance to Plaza Major and many tourist sights. The nearest metro, Callao, is only 5 mins walk away.
Our room (418) was OK, rather small with a small bathroom. The window opened onto an inner outside courtyard, no view but we were able to get fresh air and there was no noise at all. The bed was a bit hard for us.
Breakfast was very good and plentiful , the staff were friendly and helpful .
It was very nice to be able to sit at the tables outside the hotel and enjoy a drink before looking for dinner.

Room Tip: More expensive room over look the square and will be noisier. If you care more about quiet than a vi...

Hotel is pretty charming with old furnitures and appliences ( including an antique but retiered elevator, replaced by a modern one).
Although the funiture and tapestry showing wear and tear, the room was extraordinary clean.
As told by other reviewers, some rooms are facing towards the interiour Yard, which is completly covered by a glass Roof, therefore, these rooms do not have Access to outdoor fresh air. You beeter opt for a room facing towards the street. I had room 409, which is a corner room facing to two different sides (like that).
Warning: The San Martin place in front of the Hotel seems to be busy on warm days and nights, so expect to be exposed to some noise when windows are open. The windoes are equipped with state-of-the-art anti-noise Frames, so there is really no disturbance when they are closed.

BTW: with these Windows, it is provided that the rooms are well heatable during colder periods. I can confirm.

Location is really Close to the most central part of Madrid, couple of steps away from the opera, Placio Real and Placa Centro. The place in front of the Hotel is green, Hosts some terrasses of Restaurants and has very-occassional local traffic.

So, SanMartin Palacio is a real recommendation for your stay in Madrid.

Room Tip: Room 409 is a corner room, facing to the San Martin place.

We wanted a hotel that was very central but very quiet and we got it in this one. We stayed 7 days and found the location great as 2 subway stations Opera and Callao are very close andd subway travel seems the way to go in Madrid. We found our room always very clean and although a bit dated very comfortable. At night we slept very well as there was no noise despite the fact we were in the centre of Madrid.. The place is close to Palacio Reale and next door is a famous monastery. Food is readily available from a wide variety of outlets as is shopping. The staff are all very courteous .

Room Tip: We slept in a room around the inner court yard and this may be why it was so peaceful
