I stayed at this hotel early June and had a very pleasurable experience. We payed an extremely affordable price for a wonderful location, great room and luxurious bathroom! It is perfectly situated near the royal palace, with easy access to most of the city. I would stay here again and again!

Beautiful with medieval look. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Good comfortable rooms. Good locations. Near to many places of interest especially the Royal Palace is just across the road. Many restaurants around with good choice of food. Local tourist office is about 5 mins walk.

Room Tip: For two rooms on the south is good enough as it is quieter

It is true that this hotel is a little old and tired, but we experienced friendly staff who were eager to help us make the most out of our 3 nights in Madrid. The room was large on a European scale, and we were happy with the amenities provided. We had free wifi in our rooms and that was a huge bonus! The location also isn't bad--being right next to the royal palace--and we always felt safe walking back at night. However, the "hip" part of town seems to be on the other side of the old city, which is quite a walk when you've got tired feet! We wanted to get tapas, a must in Madrid (or so we've been told) but it was just too far for us to walk after a long day traipsing around the city. I suppose you can chalk that up to poor planning on our part though, I'll just say that the location wasn't as convenient as I'd hoped it would be. We also did not stay long enough to worry about the metro, so I can't comment on that.

We had a nice room, clean, with air conditioning, and the hotel staff were helpful, and the breakfast was ok. But the best thing about this hotel is location. Walking distance from Plaza Espana and Principe Pio, in front of Sabbatini gardens and Royal Castle. We got to the hotel from the airport by metro, with 2 suitcases, and it was quite easy.
All what you can expect from a 3* hotel, for a reasonable price.

Room Tip: We lived on floor 6, and it was good, although we had no view of the Castle. On the other hand, no noise from the street.

I had a good experience at Pincipe Pio Hotel. As with all hotels, there are positives and negatives, but the positives are far greater here.

Firstly, the hotel is beautiful. It has an old medieval look to it and the common areas such as the living rooms are lovely. The employees are very courteous and helpful and will assist with anything from directions and recommendations of restaurants/sights, to checking into flights and booking taxis. We were touring Spain, so we left Madrid for a couple of days and didn’t want to take our entire luggage with us. The hotel very kindly kept our big bags for us until we returned.

I had read on Tripadvisor to book rooms at the rear of the hotel, so I did. We had absolutely no noise problem with traffic etc. I would definitely recommend this. The bathrooms were big and clean and toiletries were replaced each day.

I actually found the breakfast very good, as this was meant to be a continental breakfast. Heaps of fresh and tinned fruit, cereal, juice, breads/croissants and jams. They also had an array of deli meats, scrambled eggs, yogurts and Spanish omelette.

The location is very convenient. Short walk (5min) from the Principe Pio shopping centre, which has all shops and fast food places necessary. If you walk in the other direction, you will get to Plaza de Espana in 5 mins and also very close to the tour operations such as Julia Travels. The Royal Palace is just opposite and well worth a visit. There is also the most interesting restaurant next to the hotel. It is a restaurant/bar/butchers all mixed in one, but the food is excellent.

As I said, there are some very minor negatives. The rooms at the rear of the hotel had some signs of wear and tear (carpets etc), but this is to be expected with a 3 star hotel. However, I must point out that the hotel is very clean. The lifts are tiny, but again have a medieval look to it which is quite unique. No tea/coffee facilities in the room, but an unlimited supply at breakfast. The hotel also has a bar, but this was hardly ever open.

When we returned to the hotel, we were put up in rooms facing the Royal Palace. Now there is definitely a difference in room size and quality – these rooms are lush! However, presumably to combat the sounds from the street below, the windows are extremely thick. This was in May and the weather was quite warm. We did turn on the aircon, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. Several staff members came and helped, but the aircon stayed off. Either our AC didn’t work or the hotel supply was not turned on. However, we were only back for a night, so it didn’t matter too much.

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and would not hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: Pick a room at the back of the hotel (not facing the Palace)
