We recently stayed in a twin room with balcony, the air conditioning wasn't turned on however it wasn't a problem as we could leave the balcony doors open. The hostal is spotlessly clean and located in a wonderful old building. The neighbourhood feels like you are living amongst the locals rather than surrounded by fellow tourists. We loved the french patisserie which is 2 minutes from the hostal, numerous restaurants are nearby. You can walk to all the major sites within 10-15 minutes and the hop on/hop off bus starts its route a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Would highly recommend a stay here

Room Tip: If you consider 25- 30 degrees hot ask for a balcony room as the air con is only turned on when the temperatures a lot higher.

We stayed 6 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The 3 most important things to us were the location, cleanliness and Javier.

The location on Calle Cervantes is ideal. We walked to Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace, train station, Prado, Reigna Sofa, Thysson, Reitiro Park, and numerous tapas bars and restaurants on Calle Huertas and Calle Jesus. Oh, and there is a great laundry 2 blocks away that provides reasonable same day service.

This place is so clean you could eat off the floor. We really appreciated that. The lobby has some great art and furniture. Fun place to hang out for a bit.

Javier and his brother went out of their way to be helpful, providing maps and directions almost daily. Their suggestions for restaurants and food were spot on. Gracious hosts.

No question we would stay here again. Real value!

I recently spent six nights in Madrid staying at the Hostal Gonzalo. Javier and Antonio were most gracious and helpful. Excellent location, one block from Prado and Starbucks. Private double room with private bath, and free wifi. Many tapas eateries nearby on Calle Huertas and Calle Jesus. Highly recommended. Metro station Anton Martin 4 blocks away. Atocha Railway Station 10 minute walk.

We enjoyed our stay at Hostal Gonzalo. Javier is very helpful; the location is close to the Prado, great Tapas bars, and the train station, Puerta de Atocha. The room was small, but clean and there is a cute antique elevator that works quite efficiently to take you to the hostal! Javier was an excellent host, always willing to help with suggestions and directions!

My experience was excellent and my stay as well. The staff was extremelly helpful and friendly. The rooms and so forth were impecable and a pleasure to stay with no worries what's so ever. Best home away from home. I would highly recomend it to anyone who wants to visit Spain on a friendly budget and wants a place to stay in which is close to all.
