Family-run hotel located close to Atocha train station and within a walking distance to the main attractions. We had a twin room that gave to a street, and thus at night it was a bit noisy. Furnitures were rather old but for the price we payed you cannot expect much. Hotel does not serve breakfast but there are many bars and cafes around. There's no reception either, you carry your keys with you. Probably next time I would choose another place, but if you are on a tight budget, it is a reasonable choice.

We've been just disappointed by this "hostal". Comments before our stay here made us choosing this hostel doubtless, in fact a couple of friend of us had what they guessed, but for us it has been different. They gave us a "room" that clearly had been a lumber-room before, the only one situated in the owner's home zone, without the number on the door (unlike the rooms in the hostel zone) and definitely smaller than the standard hostel room. For this reason, we always had to pass through the owner's part to reach our room, with closed doors and without any lights in the evening. We had really to pass in their living room when they were having dinner too! Terrible! Every morning at 7 we have been awaked by kitchen's noises and by owners' loud voices. There was only one socket of energy in our "room", unlike the standard hostel room in which there were three of them. The bathroom was really smaller and less spacious. In our room there wasn't a shade to cover the morning's light, but only a curtain! The owners left the window open everyday after the cleaning activity, making the room colder than the standard one. Even the bed was smaller than the standard! That's absurd! Everyday the room was invaded by the terrible smells of the owners' kitchen: one day spicy mussels' smell, another one fried doughnuts' smell. The air inside was unbreathable. Our "room" was also really darker than the standard one, in fact our lamp holder had only one working lamp on four! Ridiculous! And lastly, one morning we found a big beetle on the tiny desk of the room, and the wi-fi doesn't work because the access key is wrong!
We're feeling teased and really bad treated by this hostel, for this reason we DO NOT recommend it at all.

very good location walking distance to atocha train station if you are arriving or leaving by train (which is why i booked this hostel). its on the first floor so not too many steps. the room was not air conditioned but had a window fan to keep it cool. i had a private room and tv was provided. my room was facing the inside not the street but was still very noisy as the people in the building watch tv loud until midnite and talk loud also. the hostal is shared by the family that run the hostal. plaza mayor and most of the major sights in madrid are walking distance although the streets zig zag so takes a bit of walking. there is a bakery outside the hostal and lots of restaurants and internet cafes on the main street

The hostel is located in the middle of Calle Atocha, which is 5 minutes walk from both plaza Mayor than the 3 most important museums (Reina Sofia, Thyssen, Prado). The building looks old and the woodden stairs introduce you in another age...the rooms were indeed nice and very very clean!! The bathroom had all the basic services...brillant and clean.

The single beds are 80cm x 190cm.

The "negative" points are:
- tv which was not working, but due to the the antenna cable...no problem for us which were not interested in watching spanish tv!!!!
- the building is not only an hostel, other families lives in...you can ear at 9 am someone calling "Señora Manueeeelaaaaaa"....typical spanish indeed!!!

Finally the score of this hostel is extremely high, great value for money. Perfect location. Very clean.

I stayed with my boyfriend at Hostal Rivera for five nights in the beginning of October. Didn´t like it much. Our room was facing the very busy Calle de Atocha so we never got much sleep due to traffic noises (Madrilenos really like to have a honk competition in the middle of the night). The beds were pretty short so if you´re over 1,75m it can be quite uncomfortable sleeping in them. The room was clean but still I think it´s time for the owners to buy some new bedspreads. Can´t say that the owners were very friendly, when we asked if we could prolong our stay they grunted and said they didn´t know if it was possible, although the hostal was not busy at all. The best thing about Hostal Rivera is the location. Just a stones throw from metro station Anton Martin and in walking distance from Retiro park and downtown.
