“Perfectly good pension in a great area”
Reviewed 15 April 2013

The locations is safe, central and well placed for sights and attractions. Jaen is near the Lope de Vega museum - the same building, and close to two of Madrid's most famous museums, Prado and Sophia, and pretty much in the heart of the tourist area. Its only about a 10 - 15 minute walk between them.The owners are wonderful and very helpful.

This is a perfectly good pension in a great neighbourhood - Barrio de las Letras. Close to everything important in Madrid. Clean and quiet with all the basics covered. We stayed in room three, which is a at the end of a hallway with a balcony overlooking the street. I would ask for that one again.

Room Tip: Room three overlooks the street, which is pretty and not too noisy.

The owners are a wonderful couple who speaks very little English but plenty of warmth. They recommended great neighbor restaurant and made sure we are comfortable. I had a single bed in tiny little room with a shared bathroom. The perfectly cheery and clean room had a little balcony that lets in a ton of light (alas, also the noise from a couple of loud businessmen talking in an outdoor bar).

The most important things about this pension, however, are the following: (a) it is wicked cheap. 40 euros a night! (b) the location is ridiculously good. Las Letras is a great area with some fantastic restaurants (check out Jazz Bar down the street: great vibes and good drinks). Pension Jaen is two blocks from the Prado and Thyssen (and a Starbucks)!

You can pay 4 times as much for a hotel or you can stay at Jaen, save your money, and go out for a great meal every night.

PS: The walls are a bit thin and the wifi signal can be spotty. You are in Spain: get off the internet, go out, drink some good wine, and go to bed.

Although far from the best hotel in Madrid, it is perfectly adequate for a stop over in Madrid, mainly because of its cheapness in the middle of the main tourist area.It cost 40 euros per night to stay in the heart of the city, near the Prado and other main attractions. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and there are 3 metro stations equidistant from the Pension. The decor was not my style but it was clean. The rooms are a bit poky but enough for a couple of nights as we were out all day anyway. There is no sign outside so you need to make sure you know the exact address. Ring the bell for the 3rd floor and they will let you in the main door.

Room Tip: Make sure you know the address as you can easily walk past it. There is no ground entrance but you n...

Very central. Just a few minutes walk from the Prado

It is very small with only a handful of rooms. The staff were helpful when asked although we didn’t encounter them often. The room and especially the bathroom were very small (the sink is in the room and the toilet and shower are in the bathroom). The room was clean. Has a cool old-fashioned lift (elevator)

Pros:
- It's a good hostal, very confortable, cleen rooms;
- Has a good location, on a central area of Madrid, each to reach
- Friendly staff

Cons:
- It is a little bit expensive compared to other hostals nearby;
- The staff don't speak english, which can be a problem for non-spanish speakers;
- It's small and it's located on a residential building, there is no living area for guests;
- No breakfast, no mini bar at the rooms

Overall: The price of this hostal is between a expensive hostal and a cheap hotel. If you want confort and a clean room, and if you're staying at the room just for sleeping, and don't want to pay a lot of money, this is a good place for you. However if you want to save money, you can find better deals.

5 minutes fro the Plaza Mayor- the large plaza in the old city- so the location is awesome. Lots of restaurants and bars and minimarkets all around it. The room was spotless, great shower, good bed, quiet... even heating in the room. The family owned and run pension is very nice, simple but definitely worth the money. I would definitely stay there again and definitely recommend it to my friends. If you can get a room , then stop worrying about your lodgings in Madrid and move on to the rest of your planning.
