The Teatro Zarzuela is a beautiful and old theater near the Prado. The zarzuela performance (Luisa Fernanda) was wonderful, the performers were excellent, and the staging was beautiful. The zarzuela is unique in combining operetta and musical theater together. Ticket prices were very reasonable. The projected supertitles were in Spanish only (programs are in English and other languages) and I didn't understand a word, but the experience was very very worthwhile. I did not expect the staging to use the latest in electronic effects and scenic design but it was very up-to-date. The sightlines in the Orchestra section were excellent. It was thrilling just to be there and to know that the theater had been through both very good and very bad times and still survived. If you like zarzuela don't miss it. If you have a spare evening, you'll find this a great and very Spanish experience. Check on the internet for performance schedules.

Well worth trying to get tix if you are in Madrid. Box office opens at noon for any unsold seats on the day of performance, and there will usually be a line beginning to form at about 11:00 am. Easiest way to get there is take Metro to station Banco de Espan~a, look for "plano zonal" in station to find your way to C/ Jovellanos. Once there it will be difficult to miss the theater, as it is a very short street. If you must drive be prepared to find a parking garage early, as lines to get into nearby parking can be long in the eves. Really, it's better to skip the car and take Metro or a cab. Musically, the form is typically tuneful and will likely appeal to anyone with a taste for opera; most plots are fluff , but often heartwarming, romantic comedy fluff. The pretty people usually get together in the end.
