Great place! Good location (near Puerta del Sol and not far from Plaza Mayor), nice rooms, awesome bathroom, clean, english language available on tv, free wifi in the rooms and cheap. We couldn't fault this place!

Adequate, immaculately clean, centrally located old school hostal (a short walk to the very swanky Madrid Westin). Some rooms (like mine) can be tiny. Ours was en suite but the shower was the smallest I have ever attempted to use. Extraordinarily helpful staff (not phony and fake friendly, but helpful and professional). If you are on a budget and don't need any (and I mean any) extra space, this is a nice choice. Walking distance to 100's of bars and restaurants as well as the Prado. Not on the bus line that will take you to/from the rail station but an easy downhill stroll to a bus stop that will. 2 metro stops an easy stroll away. A very nice sweets (pastry, "donuts” etc., although strangely no coffee) shop adjacent to the entry as well as a respectable albeit not cheap Italian restaurant. Very close to the museum of ham and a laundry mat within easy strolling distance. Don't let the elevator from [--] story put you off. The elevator added to the charm of the building and worked very efficiently. Overall an okay place to stay and I would do so again if I could get a good (cheap) rate.

It was the second time I stayed in this hostel. A year before I stayed there with my family on the last floor and the room was basic, but this time i went there with my boyfriend and we got the room on the 4th floor that was recently renovated. The room had the bigger terrace than a room itself and a very good bathroom with a shower. Great LCD TV. As in many other hotel and hostels the walls are thin but there is nothing to do about it. the hostel is located just 3 min walking till Plaza del Sol.

This was my first time staying at a "hostal" and the experience was great!, helpful employees, easy to get location using either taxi or the metro, right in downtown Madrid. Taxi fare from the Barajas Airport was EUR32, it could have been only EUR3 using the metro, but I didn't know, the cab driver found the hotel easily.

The place: it seems that it was renovated not a long ago, we stayed at two different rooms and it was enough for our needs, it was quiet, CLEAN and comfortable, very useful after spending a whole day walking. They have a free internet access on a computer at the entrance so you can check emails, etc. I think that they had wireless, but I didn't have a computer. This place beats the hotel in Paris that we stayed after Madrid, period.
Do not get scared of the entrance of the building (its on the 5th floor), little dark and stuff, several hostales on that building, but once you enter the hostal everything changes.

The people: from the front desk to the maids I have no complaints about them, they helped us out in each of our requests. They even wash my clothes outside the normal schedule, I was so thankful for that.

The surroundings: metro stations, cafe's, theaters, bars, shops, etc is nearby, so we did mostly everything on Madrid walking and using the Metro.

If I return to Madrid, the Hostal Astoria will be my first choice!.

I booked 6 nights in this hotel (hostal) based mostly on TripAdvisor reviews and was not disappointed. I made the booking through booking.com and paid 53 euro per night....not bad! The room, though, was VERY small probably because of the great rate we got. But, as with lots of travel, the room was mostly only needed for sleeping.
VERY clean bathroom and the staff did a nice job each day cleaning the room. The restaurant basically downstairs, Pasta Nostra, was very nice also.
The location is great, about 20 minutes west gets you to the palace and cathedral, and only about 10 minutes east and you're at the Prado. On top of that, you're only about 4 minutes south of the Sevilla metro station. Overall, a great stay and Trip Advisor was spot on!

  • Liked — Location, use of internet in the lobby
  • Disliked — slow elevator, so taking the stairs up 5 flights was tiring after a while.

Although its strategic location near the Prado and generally high rating may seem appealing at first, I would advise everyone to exercise extreme caution when considering staying here. Our experience in Madrid was marred by a frightening experience in an elevator and the subsequent apathy of the receptionists. On the last day of our trip, my family and I found ourselves in a life-threatening predicament when stuck between floors in the hostel’s old and dysfunctional elevator. Panicking at first, we decided to constantly ring the elevator’s emergency bell, as the elevator had no emergency phone. Nevertheless, our efforts to gain help by ringing the bell proved futile, as no one even heard the bell, completely eliminating the sole purpose of an emergency bell. Deciding to then call the hostel from our family cell phone, we found the concierge extremely nervous and incapable of handling the situation in a rational manner, as she refused to call the fire department for any help. Instead, we were forced to wait gasping for breath for about 40 minutes for the hostel’s boss to open the elevator with the key and level the elevator safely. Expecting a simple “sorry” or some other form of an apology after we got out, though, our family instead received a silent, blank stare from both the concierge and the boss, highlighting their carelessness and incompetence. Thankfully, the concierge, at this juncture, spoke English; most of the hostel’s other concierge’s, however, do not speak English. If we had gotten stuck at a time during which no English-speaking receptionist was present, things would surely have been worse. The chance of one finding him/herself in such a quandary is quite high in this hostel, so taking this risk in order to save a few dollars is hardly worth it. Yes, though the rooms are nice and clean, the insensitive and faulty reception is enough to advise others to steer clear of this hostel.

We stayed at this hostal for 2 nights in Dec 07, it was minutes' away from Puerta del Sol and Chueca. The hostal is on the 4th and 5th floor, but you must request a room on 4th which is brand new, rathen than 5th, where the rooms are pretty old. The one we were original assigned before we asked to change overlooked the elevator shaft (no other windows)!

  • Liked — brand new rooms on 4th floor.
  • Disliked — the 5th floor!
